Hairless ratties need better home (Buffalo)
«
on:
June 12, 2003, 08:05:14 PM »
I live in the Buffalo NY area and I have 8 beautiful hairless I need homes for. :BlueDumboBigEyes:I am not home enough to give them the attention that they need and deserve. I do not have adequate housing for them to have a good quality of life. I hope someone can help me. I got two I saw in a horrible cage in a dingy pet shop and new I could do better than they had there, but they were male and female and it was to late to separate them, then there were 6 girls and 6 boys. 2 I have already got homes for and unfortunately 2 died,
so I need homes for the rest of the babies and I think I should also find better living arrangements for the adults. They're very loving and one baby female has megacolon, so whomever can take them must promise to take extra special care of her. She's a sweety.

If we can work out transport I would love to have a male or two (if you can tell two apart by looks). I live in Rego Park, NY. I'll sent you some more info about me too.

I guess it would have to be eventually, thats a big reason I want them to go now, I will cry so bad if I have to watch her suffer. I could never put her down myself and my husband would kill me if I spent money at a vet. an article the rat lady sent me said I could help it out. She seems ok for now.

I'm confused, you want to adopt out a rat that's dying from a very painful disease because you don't want to spend money to have her put down?
Someone else will have to adopt the rat, then have it put down.
Or am I missing something..

You know, I didnt realize this disease was that fatal. I have read several articles that say with special care they can live, so no, I don't want her adopted out to be put down, I want it adopted out to someone who will take good care of her until she does die. I didnt know the life span was so short. Don't make me out to be a bad person. I took these guys from a more dirtier place then I hope they'll ever see again. I'm sorry if you took my other reply wrong. I am not a vet. if maybe you could help me with the well ones I'd love to hear from you.

Rats with megacolon usually die within 5-10 weeks of birth.
http://www.raisinrats.com/medical/megacolon.html
http://www.afrma.org/megacecum.htm
Quote
Anyone who has had intestinal distension from gas can attest to the pain and discomfort, and I would suppose that rodents with megacecum and/or megacolon are also uncomfortable. In terms of breeding good healthy rodents for pets, it would be unethical in my opinion to knowingly breed rats with this condition. It makes no sense to me to breed rats that are going to potentially suffer and die prematurely. I do understand that there are certain coat color patterns that occasionally segregate with megacolon/megacecum in some lines of rats. However, there are other lines with the same coat color patterns that do not contain megacolon/megacecum. In my opinion, it is more humane to euthanize affected rats rather than to try and treat them. It is true that there are a few diligent owners with affected rats that may be successful in keeping the affected rats alive, but at what cost? Is it worth the suffering to all the ones that will not survive?

Thank You for that article, it's one I did not read. Although it says they can be cared for, I am not the right person to do it. She seems fine right now, she is still eating and drinking and she does go poop, sometimes with help. I was told a good diet of vegetables and leafy greens and lot of water would help keep her "regular". Pardon my ignorance as I am not really a rat expert. I do not know what is right because I see she is still active, I dont want to put her down while she still has good life in her.

It's right by NYC.
How old are the babies now? Anna's right, that babies with megacolon usually die very early on, which is why many breeders adopt out their babies when they're over 6 weeks old to make sure none of them have it. I'm no expert on the subject by no means, but I don't think I've heard of any rats with megacolon surviving?
I would love to help out, I used to live in Rochester, but recently moved back to Long Island. Buffalo would be about 7hr drive from here. Are you willing to travel some?

Im glad to learn all these things i did not know. In the future when I am better suited to care for them again, I will find out all I need to know. But thats how I guess we learn. By experience. Other than my poor sick baby, all the rest seem fine. The mother is almost flawless. She is beautiful. All the boys seem in good health also. They were born May 9th. As does the other baby female. I am willing to drive some, but I do not know how far, Long Island is kind of far from here.

Thank you for responding, Sugar Plum who is in Queens wants a boy and I do not know how many bayblue might want. CT is still an awful long drive from Buffalo, it is clear on the other side of the state. Please let me know if we can work something out.

Albany is sort of a mid-point between us, and it's about 3 hours either way from here and from Buffalo. We could meet at a rest-stop there and do a switch if you'd like. I come through Buffalo somewaht regularly to go see my family in Ontario, but I won't be going up anytime soon unfortunately, so I could meet you in the middle and then Sugarplum and/or Babyblue and I could work something out for the switcheroo. It's -possible- that I might take one of them myself, but have they been quarantined or no?
*edit* to account for the fact that I just woke up.

I could possibly arrange that on a weekend. I don't know what you mean by quarantined though. I do not have a lot of experience with the whole rat world. I can tell you that I bought them as a pair from a local pet store..(we just went in to look and the guy specialized in reptiles and I seen a little pink vienna weiner (thats what they look like to me when they're born) in the cage with a baby snake and I didnt want those guys ending up in one of the cages either so I bought them. I've kept rats with a freind of mine, but he was more less the caregiver, I was just the plaything. Anyway, i had them for about 3 or 4 weeks when I noticed the female was with babies. Then When she had them, I separated the daddy right away as to avoid more babies, then he was by himself for 4 weeks while momma reared the babies. Everybody seems well except for my baby girl who has megacolon. is that contagious?
let me know what we may be able to arrange.
thanks

Quarantining means absolutely no contact with outside rats for minimum of 3 weeks or more. This means no new rats, and if you went to a petstore that sells rats you'll need to change your clothes and take a shower when you get home (or you can just stay away for a few hours before you come home), no friends coming over who has rats at home and visa versa, etc. Rat owners do this because there are some very contagious and deadly diseases such as Sendai or SDA and the only way to prevent it is to completely quarantine any and all new rats that are coming into the colony.
I don't know that *I* personally will take any of your rats, I was actually asking for SugarPlum cuz she's been looking for one for awhile. While I'd love to get me a hairless rat at some point, right now I have my hands full with my fosters. But if you REALLY need to place these rats soon and if this transport thing does work out, I *may* be able to take a few of them temporarily and try to place them from here. Let's first see if we can get one down here for SugarPlum who's been eagerly waiting for one for a long time
How old are the babies now? How's the baby with megacolon doing?

My mega-baby, I affectionately call her, is, or seems to be fine for now. I spoke with a freind of mine at the SPCA and they will take her and euthanize her for only $5.00. I can't even think about it without choking up. My daughter helps me with her, she feels like she saved her life when she removed a blockage in her when we first found out what was going on. Now she helps her poop and hand feeds her lettuce to keep her healthy. It will be very hard to take her in. I didnt realize you had so many rats yourself. I am not desperate right now, if I can place most of them I may just keep a couple. I have room for 2, which is originally what I planned. I have not been near a pet store since I bought them probably 10 or more weeks ago. And no outsiders have been in. So I guess you can say they have been quaratined. Is that correct?

rq, you know you want to take some! How could you not? Emma, Daisy, Kira, Harry and Fuzzy are all taking bets on how many you'll end up with! Hairless are just so wonderful. Amy, you did the right thing by coming here to ask for help. It shows you care enough about your kids to find homes rather than dump them somewhere. I hope all your babies find wonderful homes. From the sound of it, it looks like those here who can help will be the best homes they could ask for. Good luck to you, and congrats to everyone for opening your hearts. SugarPlum...your wish has been granted. I'm so happy for you.

SugarPlum, I can transport from Albany. I've responded here and (hopefully) on the Rat Transport list. I signed up for it but truthfully dunno how to post to it
SO maybe I posted and maybe I didn't, but nevertheless I can get to Albany to scoop 'em for you. How far up into CT will you be able to come to meet me?
Amy, (or SugarPlum) you can email me at
ratgrl@earthlink.net
if you want to work out a day (gotta be a weekend) when we can meet Albany-way.
BabyBlue, are you in line for any of these weiners?

Amy, have you separated the babies by sex? They're old enough now that to avoid more hairless you're going to need to put them in two separate areas. I just wanted to mention this to avoid possible issues a month down the road.
If you haven't, the way to do it is to look for boy packages and probably they can go live with their dad and the little girlies can stay with momma.

I am overwhelmed with the kindness I have encountered on this website. I did not realize the rat world was so big. I did alot of research on -line when I got these guys home, so yes I did separate by sex. I took poppa out right away as to not get mommy pregnant right away and I separated the boys and girls. I think big poppa was happy with that being alone for 4 weeks must have sucked for him, although he was next to them, it just isn't the same. I will e-mail everybody to try to work out getting my big poppa down to SugarPLum. I know she will love him.

Hi. I live in Manhattan and would take some of your babies if they still need homes and IF you (or someone) can get them down here. (Unfortunately I don't drive). I'd particularly like boys, but the offer is open to either. I've had pet rats for over 10 years, (even been on TV a few times with them) and I have a real soft spot for hairless ratties. They'd have a loving home here. Thanks.

Drusilla, it looks like there will be a transport to somewhere in the LI area. Details haven't been worked out yet but if they're not already claimed I'm sure we can find a way to get them to you.

Well, I think all my boys are going to be heading down to NYC. I am so happy for them. All I need to do is figure out how to get them to Albany and they'll be ready to go. My girls hopefully will be going to Holly NY. Thank you everybody for responding. We will keep in touch via e-mail to coordinate transportation. Hopefully someone can help me get them from here to there.
