Ratties rock!

« on: June 16, 2003, 02:19:39 PM »

So a few months ago I adopted two rats from PetSmart (should've known better, with all the awesome rescues out there, but I've certainly learned my lesson now) in West Lafayette, IN.  One of them had a couple of very small patches of hair loss on his neck and the base of his tail.  These turned out to be ringworm.  As I've inquired into this situation, I've heard a rumor that the root of the problem is in the Adopt-A-Pet center, where they keep the cats that are up for adoption.  Apparently there has been a ringworm outbreak in there, but they are only treating the cats with one antifungal bath before putting them up for adoption (proper treatment consists of six weeks of treatment, giving two or three 10-minute baths per week with an antifungal shampoo).  People then go in to pet/play with/take care of the cats, pick up the ringworm, and spread it all over the store.

Just thought I'd let everyone know what's going on here.  I don't think that all PetSmart stores have the same crappy management, but this is a heads up just in case.

It's probably not a problem with management in this case.  We had ringworm going around at work awhile back.  It was terrible!  An employee brought it in, and all of the chinchillas got it.  After months of trying to treat the chinchillas we had and not selling any chins, it started spreading to other animals and we had them all PTS.  It was horrible, but we had to stop it from spreading any more.
