according to the cage calculator(http://www.kristinewickstrom.homestead.com/files/PanelApplet.html), that cage is not even big enough for half of one rat. Whether or not you need to cover the wire on the floor depends on the spacing/kind. If you did cover it with fabric, you would need to clean it more than once a week, most likely as it tends to get gross really quickly. That said, the cage really needs to be upgraded anyway.

No, that cage is not big enough for one rat, let alone two.  It's more sized for a hamster or a couple of gerbils.

On average, rats need about 2 cubic feet of space per rat - although that can vary depending on how many levels, size of the rats, etc.  That's 3,456 cubic inches - yours, at 18x11x8, is only 1584 inches.

A popular site to get cages is http://www.martinscages.com - The R-670 is generally recommended as the smallest for two rats, although two smallish girls would probably be ok in a 660. They also sell tank toppers, if you have an aquarium you'd like to turn into a cage.  (Keeping rats just in aquariums isn't recommended - they have sensitive lungs, the lack of ventilation can cause problems.)  You can also find cages at pet stores if you know what size to look for, although they're rarely cheaper than Martin's. Ebay is another good place to look for used cages, or the Pack Rat Swap Meet here.

You're right, some of the cages Martin's sells aren't truly big enough for rats; notice that most of those ones have cage #s starting with HR instead of R - they're really hamster cages that they've listed on the rat page as well.  Martin's is a great company, but they're there to make money, not to make sure people buy the right cage size for their animal...

The new cage, with the add-on sounds great for two rats!

Good luck with the cage! I find that the best martins cages for rats are in the ferret section, but maybe its just personal preference, lol. I own a couple of the f-435's and they are so easy to put together.

I too love the Martins F435, but with the 1" x 1" bar spacing, they're not appropriate until rats are at least 3 - 4 months old.

These are more cage calculators, there's one that also works on the floor space, not just the volume.

Hmm, maybe I had large baby rats, Dearpie, but my two month old rats couldn't fit through the bars at all when I put them in the 435.

So you have 3 rats..., so the cage need to be big enough for three rats not two.

no, she had one rat, and the new rat she got ages ago (this is an old topic) is the second. Her sentance should read "Well I got a different cage that can fit 2 rats! I got a new rat a while ago, and she is treated like the other ones baby."
(not trying too put words in her mouth, just that's how I've read it, though of course I may be wrong!)
