Yes - use the olive oil. It is good for their skin and coat and they love licking it off their tails. It forces them to groom themselves before their cagemates - lol.

I just don't recommend using the olive oil just before you put them on aspen bedding. Then they get to lick wood dust. Ewww. LOL.

I think bedding + laziness leads to that. Some beddings probably allow it faster than others.

If the tail is that grungy - then you can rinse it in warm water before the olive oil. That helps to get off some of it. I've tried toothbrushes (someone recommended that to me years ago) and the rat abhorred it and cursed me.

He thinks he's pretty hot stuff now!  Grin He chased Floog and Forti all around the cage, but running into a cranky Gideon stopped him dead and he settled back in fine.

Tiny has gained 8 grams since mating! Of course, it could be all the treats  Cheeky but Una, her same-age cagemate, has not gained a similar amount.

Today's weight: 272g

I found with my girls they'd gain around 10g in the first few days, even off a bit, then slowly gain weight the second week, and a lot of weight the third week Smiley Have fun with her! But the waiting really hurts...

Pretty soon you should start taking humiliating belly shots on her. You can make a slideshow or better yet - adorable captions like "MOM! Does this cage make me look FAT?"  Yellow Cute Laugh

Saydrah, does your website host allow you to add a blog to your page? I think it would be a great resource if you did a day by day blog of your first litter. Plus, fun pictures.

MsMagpie, that's what I have the RizzleRats blog for: http://rizzlerats.wordpress.com

I should start tracking her weight on there.

Technically I can put that on my own domain but I don't know how! Wah! Gr8Dane on the forums here offered to help but I haven't called yet

Wait a second. . . I thought that was supposed to be land of UNLIMITED Yogies!

And that is really cruel - making them swim all that way!

Okay, is it time to start guessing the size of the litter? I'm guessing 11 babies, 4 females and 7 males, all fawns. Do I win a baby if I guess right?

I always guess 13. She will have one short of the number of girls that she has reservations for. . . And I think I heard a rumor once that you have to NAME the baby to get it - lol.

Oooh, this is always a fun game!

I'll put my own guess in- since it's my first litter I don't think I have an unfair advantage Wink

I will be an optimist and say 12, with 6 boys and 6 girls!

And Scout, aren't you great-great-great-grandma to this litter already?  Cheeky But I think the people you QT for might lynch me if I gave you rats of your own!

Cheeky You know, I'll be in Boulder at the end of April to collect my winnings!

And I WISH people would use me for a QT home. But they'd rather take the risk. Go figure.  icon_scratch
