Hi guys,

Six lovely adult PEW boys were dumped in a box at the front door of a shelter I work with, despite it being open-intake and open 24/7. My guess is that these are end of semester lab rats liberated by some students, but we'll never know for sure. I've adopted out one to a forum member, who can attest to his lovely temperament.

Because these are mature (I'm guessing 1 - 1.5 yo) and PEW, and the shelter is still technically over capacity even after I pulled a dozen, the shelter is very concerned about their ability to find homes. They've offered to neuter them if that will improve their placement prospects.

There's not one square inch left here to house another rat, but if anyone's interested, I'll be happy to arrange surgery (if desired), pull them, and transport them to the NW Chicago suburbs for pick-up. There will be a small adoption fee to defray my gasoline costs since the shelter is an hour's drive in each direction. but that's all.

As if you needed more incentive to snag one of these guys, here's a few pictures of the one in my home.  I'm sure they all look about the same. Tongue   Lazer is the sweetest guy.  Cuddles, plays well with others- a real model citizen, with a cute smile to boot.   Yellow Cute Laugh  My husband initially said PEW's were 'creepy', and just in the short time he's been here so far, he's managed to become one of my husbands' favorites.  (And my husband typically only likes the girls, because the boys' endowments 'creep' him out too.)

He's very agile, too!  Just look at him leap over that block!  (Okay, fine, he's actually really mellow..)

If location is an issue, I'm sure it could be worked out that I could help transport, though I can't go real far.  Anywhere in the Rockford-DeKalb area, and a bit of space around that I could help with.

I'm so sorry to hear about Apollo.

All of these are top ears.

Around which suburbs can you travel to? Just to get an idea of location. I might be interested in a neutered boy or two.  Smiley

Call it within a half hour of Mt. Prospect. Maybe a little further if gas money is offered.

Darn. I'll have to see if I can work anything out. Mt prospect is about 45 minutes from my job, but I wouldn't be able to go after work during the week. And it's a little over an hour from my house. I'm gonna see if I can talk someone in to going with me this weekend or next (this weekend is a little busy). What is the adoption fee? Man I hope I can get someone to go with me (I get lost/turned around easily by myself lol).

BlueFrog,
I have been looking for 2 boys. Where could I meet them this week? I was also hoping for neutered. Are they squishy? I can drive to meet them or you and them.
Thanks,
Victoria

If I'm not mistaken, those boys are slated for euthanasia tomorrow. I'm stopping by in the morning, and will speak to the manager to get them an extension. If I tell her I have solid interest, I'm sure she'll grant it. Nobody's neutered yet, but I will arrange to have it done before I pick them up.

They are not yet truly squishy in physique, but are definitely well on their way!

How many are left?

If there is any way to get them this way, I would help.  Neutered is a plus so I wouldn't have to do it, but not necessary.

I would like to adopt a neutered male.  If something could be arranged with Nevadamoon for pickup in the Rockford/Dekalb area, that would be even better but not necessary.  I hope you get this in time.  Email me at yhwhnisi@mchsi.com with the information.

PHEW! Thank you guys so much for your responses.

I went to the shelter today, and the person who is authorized to determine which animals go in the back room, as well as who gets speutered, wasn't in today. So, they are safe for now. I will follow up tomorrow to get these guys under the knife ASAP. I can say that after being fed and cleaned up since I saw them last, they are looking much younger and squishier.  Balloon All five are still there, and still being their charming selves. When I pulled the igloo out and they realized they had company, everyone came out to say Hi.

In the meantime, to further reduce the pressure on the shelter population, I pulled the five other rats in residence: all nine-week old (supposedly) hairless males, both light and dark. I'll take & post pictures once my camera batteries recharge. They were not living with the PEWs at the shelter, but I'm sure introductions will be a snap, especially since their cage was placed on top of the PEWs cage so everyone should recognize each other scents. I truly don't have the first clue where I'm going to put these guys but I'll figure something out.

Anyone interested in adopting PEWs, hairless, or both, would you drop me an email privately with an introduction to yourself and how you keep your rats?

Good news! I was able to get ahold of my contact, and all the rats will be neutered over the next few days. Tentative - very tentative - ETA of the group in my house is Monday.
