Today I found my new glass earring(body jewelry type, thick and heavy 4 guage size)in my rat's cage.It fell out of my ear when I was asleep, and Cairo stole it and stashed it in his cage!He lives in the top of a FN,so it would have been alo work for him carrying that heavy thing while climbing up the side of the cage!Crazy rattie!

My rats also steal erasers (that I have laying around, because I like to chew on them, yeah,I'm weird, don't ask). They really love those for some reason. They even play tug-o-war when you grab it to get it away!I find them hidden under the pillows on my couch all the time!

What is the weirdest thing your rats have ever stolen?

What's their favorite thing to steal?Even if it's a favorite food they steal from their buddies.

Where do they stash it?

*Edited to change the subject line from "so" to "do" because it was driving me nuts!

The girls LOVE to stash silk flowers and hair elastics.  If I can't find the elastics after run time, I can go look in the corner behind their cage, and yup, there they hide them.

The boys don't like to stash stuff as much as they like to eat.  If they can eat it, nom nom Smiley

none of my current rats like to steal stuff and stash it *that i know of*, but my first rat Jane used to take any and everything shiny (pins, tin foil, coins) and even other things like playing cards.... One night my boyfriend and i were playing poker with dimes, Jane had a hay day running up and grabbing the money and the cards then taking off with them. and one night she grabbed the little plastic cover for my Ipod and I honestly haven't seen it since!!!

Aside from food, they like to steal anything paper, a la Ratatouille.

Though one time Hastur found one of the rolled up foil balls we give the cats. I don't know why he wanted it so badly, but he fought us for it when we tried to take it away.

My girls used to steal and stash important papers off my desk, and use them as bedding..They just stick their little hands through the bars, and pull.. I gotta remember to move their cage away from my desk..Food is most common, and also the toys I buy for them, they pee and stash, that's their way.. Roll Eyes

Ribbon! I wear ribbon in my hair like a headband and everytime I let Luna out to play when she would go strait for it! one time I left a pile of it on my desk and when I came in there was this long trail of ribbon all the way across the desk and through her cage into her nest area. I should have taken a picture of it! that little bugger, I miss her.

My Smudge tries to steal my earrings - out of my ears.  Particularly if they are dangling.
And the boys try to take away the buttons on my shirt.

Would be easier if they would steal something not attached to me!

i always try to rat-proof my room before letting the boys out, so they haven't stolen anything too weird..

Ian stole and chewed on my history notes on more than one occasion. he also nicked some homework and nibbled all the corners off. he also decimated my English I syllabus to the point where it was just barely hanging on by half a staple and all the edges were ragged xD I got weird looks when i pulled it out to look in class. he also stole about $100 in $20s once while i was counting out money and i had to chase him around the couch to get it back. the next day i bought pizza with it and the lady was like "errr did you get hungry?" coz apparently he'd knawed off a good bit of a corner ahhhaa.

as you can tell, he loves to eat paper.

Ahren nicked my carmex and drug it under the couch and i couldnt find it for two days. the stuff has addictive properties and i can't use anything else on my lips or they get sore and dry, so i was misreble trying to use my mom's chapstick hehe. he's not to much of a theif though. He prefers to knaw on my clothes and towels rather than other items.

This is the funniest thing tat happened to me.  I was taking a shower and my two boys were playing on the bathroom floor.  I heard noises and decided to peek out and see what they were doing.  I watched Ethan jump out of the little garbage basket with a Q-tip and put it in my boot, then go back to the trash and get a tissue and do the same thing.  I couldn't believe the amount of trash I emptied out of that boot.

Since the FN is next to my computer desk, Bella likes to squeeze out and steal CD's and any other papers she can find on the desk.  I found my 2007 tax papers in their cage!!   They also like to pull up part of the rug and once in a while I will find tufts of rug in the cage.

Remmy likes to try and make off with my lighters when I leave them on my desk. Yellow Cute Laugh The girls don't play anywhere but on my bed so I've been okay there. The night I forgot to close the cage Remmy had stashed a bunch of zipties and unemployment papers behind my computer.

One thing I'm REALLY glad I noticed was Ike stealing two $100 bills off the top of my dresser! They were the deposit I got back from my recent car purchase, and I'd just set them on the dresser that day. I looked over and they weren't there, and looked down to see Ike doing the "ratty carrying something bigger than himself run" with my money is his mouth! He was running to stash it under the dressing table where he puts lab blocks and other paper.

The most EMBARASSING thing my rats have stolen? Um, trying to keep this a PG forum...my Trouble got into the drawer by the bed and chewed open the packages for a number of, er, male contraceptive devices, and stashed some in the underwear drawer she likes to burrow and stash in. What a surprise I had when I opened that drawer!!  Shocked

Other popular items? Earplugs are fun, money or any paper, and shiny coins.

Spoons are the biggest thing here... but they've also gone after my keys, and have made repeated (and thusfar unsuccessful) attempts at stealing my glasses off of my face.

Also, anything I am eating while there is a rat perched on my shoulder is considered property of the rat, and is mine to eat only if the rat doesn't decide to come and take it away from me.

Yes, my girls had chewed (though not stolen) some, er, unused ladies sanitary products that were in my satchel. They run off with receipts and papers as well as my favorite eraser (when I told a friend the marks on it were rat bites, he dropped the eraser and washed his hands). But most of all, they tend to stash food though and I'm constantly finding half chewed Harlan Tekland in all the nooks and crannies of my bed as well as any other snacks (peas, granola, etc.). I have to do a kibble check before going to bed a night.

Nothing terribly odd. A few used to pick up dice that were lying around and tried to store them.

Now when they run loose, they tend to just get into things, rather than taking them.

My rats seem to enjoy trying to steal anything attached to me - my rings, my necklace, my watch, my earrings, my nose stud, the little barbell in my eyebrow, my shirt, my pants, my glasses when I'm wearing them, my fingernails. One girl (I can't remember if it was Kiyone (RIP) or Isane; I just know it was a smeeze) managed to pull the drawstring out of my hood once. She was so determined to have that I let her keep it. She stashed it in their igloo, with the food. They'll steal the cat toys, too, sometimes.
They also like paper products. Little Jun-Jun (RIP) was the only rat we had at the time who loved to wander the house; she would go into my room, dig around for paper (in my book bag, on my floor, wherever she could find it) and even if it was a full sheet of paper (I think especially because it was), she would grab it and do that hop-across-the-floor-with-the-thing-that's-five-times-her-size run/hop back into the living room and try to take it into her cage. Usually, it was homework she grabbed, so I couldn't let her keep it - wouldn't that be something to tell my teacher: "my rat ate my homework" Yellow Cute Laugh.
Ukitake loves to steal and stash food. He'll take it no matter where he is and try to get back to his cage to store it in the igloo on the bottom level. He tried to take off with a whole chocolate-brownie-bar thing once; mom wasn't thinking when she set him down next to it and he didn't hesitate to grab it and run off. He didn't get far, though, since the bar was as big as he is Yellow Cute Laugh

My boys like to steal pens and things, usually when I'm sat on an evening writing, they'll come and get them.

Last night I was sat on the floor on my laptop, graphics tablet balanced on my lap, boys little cage on the floor next to me. Finn came out (he's getting really brave now) put his front paws onto the graphics tablet (keeping his back ones on the 'drawer bridge') and stretched out to grab my pen for the tablet. Then dragged it almost all the way back into the cage.

Other things they like to take; tissues, especially if I'm using them at the time, trying to steal the beads on my necklaces (while I'm still wearing them), since I got back from holiday, if I waggle my finger through the bars of the cage then Nero will grab it with both paws and his teeth and try and pull me into the cage through the bars!

The funniest thing I've ever seen a rat try to steal was a biscuit the same size as himself. He grabbed it out the packet from the table, dashed off the table with his head tipped right back so he couldn't see where he was going (I swear as he ran over the edge his little legs kept on running for a few seconds like in the cartoons), when he landed he did a little forward roll, picked up his biscuit and then ran off with his prize. We went from panicking that he'd hurt himself to wetting ourselves with laughter at the sight of it all.

Oreo has a penchance for Kleenex.  I did not realize this until I had a rattie missile launch at my face when I tried to blow my nose...

He jumped and tried to grab it, then was franticly dancing around, going "Gimmie! Gimmie! Mine?  Mama, PLEASE!"  I gave him his own, and he raced over to hide it under his pillow.  On the way, he managed to step on it and tear it.  He dove under the pillow, but immediately popped back out looking very confused.  All he wound up with was a small torn corner of Kleenex.  He made three trips to gather the entire tissue because he kept "tripping" on it and tearing it  Yellow Cute Laugh

I now know that if I need to blow my nose, Oreo needs a Kleenex too.. LOL

I LOVE this thread!  I've cracked up reading it Smiley

The BEST thing that any of my rats have stolen was by Tallulah...I had gotten some Baklava from a friend, and set it down on the desk, forgetting that the rats were playing on it..This baklava had too weigh nearly what 'Lu weighed, but that didnt stop her from grabbing it and dragging it backwards into her cage!  It was too heavy for her to lift, but by the time I noticed it, she had gotten it in the cage, and she and Sophie were working together to get it up into their favorite pouch.  *facepalm*

Other than that, there's not too much out of the ordinary that my girls take...Paperclips, erasers, money...the usual things.  OH!  Raelyn only will ever take ONE thing...I made this origami penguin that I kept on my desk at college, and whenever Rae got out, she would run straight to the penguin and grab it and carry it around with her...She wouldnt stash it, just bring it around the desk with her while she played, and bring it back to her cage when she was done  Roll Eyes I guess he was an honorary rat

Rowan, it was one of those moments you always wish you could have captured on video. It was hilarious.

Last night Finn was hovering around on the drawbridge of their small 'downstairs' cage. On the table next to him was a half finished packet of mint imperials. I don't think he wanted the mints, just the bag (Finn is a chronic nester, he makes beds out of anything). Will was otherwise occupied with Nero and all of a sudden we heard a rustling noise as Finn tried to pull the bag up off the table. It caught on one of the paperclips which I use to make the door stay open and he was there alternately tugging and dashing inside the cage in case we grabbed him.

In the end I gave him the wrapper from a chocolate bar because he was so desperate to make a bed.  Roll Eyes
