I know, I'm horrible, right? I don't even know what species they are! I looked up Dumbo Rex since that name seems to be going around here a lot, but it doesn't look like them.  help please?

In basic terms, they are both standard black hooded.  Breeders have more complicated terms to describe different degress of hooded, capped, etc (to indicate genetic traits), but standard black hooded is how you would describe them to someone who asks.  The standard means they have standard ears (one the top, not sides, of the head).  Dumbos have their ears on the side.  I prefer standards because they look like little elf ears!!  Yellow Cute Laugh
The hooded is because the black extends past the neck area and goes down their back (even though your boys just have some splotches down their back).
Very cute boys!!  I love black hooded ratties.  They always seem so shiny!

ETA: All common pet rats are the same species, its the type that is being described.  Type includes things like ears, color, marking, and coat (some rats have curly fur and whiskers and are called Rex, othes are hairless, etc).

The first boy is a mismarked black bareback and 2nd boy is a black bareback, both with standard ears.

Their coats could be velveteen (poor rex) but that pink skin and what looks like scabs makes me think of mites.  I think you might want to treat them.  Are they scratching a lot or have scabs on their shoulders, neck, chin and face?

They don't really scratch themselves a whole lot. I've seen them do it a couple of times, but I've had them for a year and I think if it was mites they'd be scratching a lot more than that in such an amount of time. As for scabs, I've never noticed any on them.

Actually, the color is more orangish. It just looks pink because I took the picture with a cell phone. I was told that the orange stuff on their skin was Buck Grease and that I wash them to get rid of it. Is there anything else I should do?

Oh good!!  Glad it was just the colour of the pics. Smiley Orange-ish buck grease is fine, you can give them a crust of bread with olive oil on it once a week and it should help that out.

Are their coats greasy?

A little, but not much. I don't know what kind of soap I should use though... I'm scared of hurting them with something...

Use Dawn dish soap (the kind you use to wash dishes by hand).  Its gentle on their skin and cuts through grease.  Just make sure NOT to do their head or ears.  Stop getting them wet at the neck area as water can get in their ears and they shouldn't have soap anywhere near there.

Yes the bareback is really a hooded.  Its a different pattern but from the hooded gene.

They are all rats whatever their coat (standard, rex, etc) or their ear placement (standard or dumbo) or their colour/pattern (eg. black hoodie, blue self, etc).

I take it your boys are older?  I would try the olive oil first, and see if it helps the buckgrease before the Scary Bath. Smiley
