We're thinking of doing a permanent playpen setup, but I'd like to get some ideas before going forward with it. (Don't want it to be really bulky or awkward looking, etc.)

Does anyone have this kind of thing? Do you have pictures of it? I'd love to get some ideas.

I don't know what you mean by permanent.  This is a picture of mine.  It is a 4x4 square made of hardboard.

We use that hardboard too. We have changed the shape( by adding or subtracting panels) and location of the playpen many times so it is really semi permanent. It is put together with duct tape hinges. We added a plexi glass panel but that piece is shorter than the hardboard. Luckily they don't think to jump that high...but some would.
On my wish list is a 100% plexiglass one ( same idea they even make the same precut size panels as the hardboard)...I think that would be very cool.

I do the same thing. And underneath I have foam mats that link together. On top of that blankets

We're supposed to sleep in those bedrooms Yellow Cute Laugh My allergies are so bad though, I just couldn't do it. I think we'll just put the playpen I have now up in the evening and take it down before bed after each group has their romp in there. I don't want to keep something like that up 24/7, now that I think about it. It would be nice to have them in a totally separate room, but it's really visible so it would drive me crazy.

I have a Martin's Play Pen that I leave set up 24/7.  Sorry no pics but it works perfect where it is.  And the nice thing is that since it has a lid when I am in a pinch it can act as a cage and hold up to something like 14 rats!  Hahahahahahahahaha

I have been thinking about getting a Martins playpen for my boys. How do you like it? Do you have to assemble it? I had to have someone assemble my Martins 695 that I bought for the boys. I could not have done it in a thousand years

I wouldn't think assembling it would be hard since it's essentially just a square with a top, right?

The playpens come assembled. Wink They're collapsible so they fit in the box just fine.

I love my Martin's play pen and I honestly think it is one of the best rat investments I have made next to the FNs.  It is easily collapsed for storage when needed.  I is safe for the rats to play in unsupervised since it has a lid.  There was no assembly required.  Just take it out of the box and set it up.  It can double as a cage in a pinch.  You can hang hammocks and such from it since it has wires whereas plywood ones you can't really hang anything from unless you screw into the wood.  I also like that I can put a water bottle on it so that they can get drinks when out for play time.  I was always worried about them getting thirsty when free ranging in the bathroom.

I am a Martin's fan and have been looking at the playpens.  What size do you have/recommend?  I know- bigger the better- but it's a difference in $58 and $72.  I have 3 girls.  I currently have a home made cardboard pen that works but takes time to set up with clips, etc.

With three girls you could get away with the smaller one but come on....the point of play time is to get some exercise and be able to strech those legs.  I really would spring for the larger one.  Besides it really isn't THAT much more!  You won't regret it and your rattie girls will love it.

I'm going to order the large playpen for my boys. I know I only have two boys but like you said they will be able to stretch their legs. Maybe this will help cheer Stuart up. He has been so sad since we lost Albert. Now if I can find some really cool toys to put in there it will be great.

I have the large playpen and my guys love it! I fill it up with lots of toys and igloos and a wheel and they spend all their time exploring and sniffing everything! Your two boys will love the large playpen!

I just use my bed, I pull my blankets up and put my pillows on top of my bed, and add boxes, a play set, and tunnels, really different things every night.  They love it. And when they get bored, especially if theyr'e out for more than like 3 hours, then they tunnel under my sheets and chase eachother around.  Funny, I'm sure some non- rat savvy people would be so grossed out by rats running in between their bed sheets!

We had an outside playpen for the summer which they love so my hubby made another bigger one. we put one on the grass and one on the concrete and have connected them with a tube so the rats have a choice of "hard or soft" to play on.

For those without lids, how high are the sides?
I really need something. My girls are destroying dd's room - including chewing their way int her dresser & chewing her clothes, plus sneaking into her closet & getting at stuff in there.

Must...not...show...rats....  They'll never love me again  Grin My guys get to run around like crazy on a ::Gasp:: couch...they're so deprived. Your set up is awesome. If I didn't have a 140 lb monster dog that would act like godzilla to that cage  , my boys would definitely have a copy cat cage. lol.

I have a hardboard playpen, but I don't leave it up all the time. I usually set it up every other day, and leave it up for a few days, then take it down and the rats get playtime in the chair with me instead. It's hinged (but they only fold one way so that the anchoring wood is on the outside for the whole thing), so I just take two panels off (there are 6 altogether), fold the two in half, fold each end of the 4 panel section in, and slide it all under my bed.

For those without lids, how high are the sides?

My playpen has 2'8" high sides, so that I can leave them in and leave the room without them jumping out. I think a few inches less would be fine, and probably easier to get over (I have fairly long legs and am averagely tall, someone shorter then me wouldn't be able to get over though). The only reason it's 2'8" rather then something a bit lower is that we were using one 4' by 8' sheet, and that's just what the hight ended up being when cut into thirds.

Wow! I'm really envious of that amazing outdoor playpen! What happy rats you must have, flossyplops. Right now I live in a apartment and let the girls run around the bathroom, but when I get a house I'm totally copying your playpen.  Grin
