Loving every day with my 7 ratlings

« on: August 06, 2008, 04:15:45 PM »

YEAH!!!  I pick up my new FN on sunday.  I found one on Craigslist for $150 that looks brand new and was barely used.  This is what the babies will go in after the boys are fixed in September.  Well, a few weeks after, don't want any accidental litters.  I'm so excited.   Hyper

I went and got the Octoplay and the fish today on clearance at PetSmart today and am going to build a hardboard playpen also.  Spoiled bRATs.   Cheeky

I can't wait to start decorating it.  I'm thinking black and white...or yellows and greens....depends on who has a fabric I like.  Wouldn't want to offend the boys with pink, it's bad enough I'm getting them fixed...but to put them in a pink cage too?   Yellow Cute Laugh

Nice deal!  I've made and bought plenty of cages in the past, and I don't know how I ever lived without this!  There are a few tiny things I might change, but overall, it's as close to the perfect cage as I've ever had!

im getting a FN in couple of days, (shipping) and i was wondering what u have in it for bedding, not actual "bedding" like carefresh, but do u just put fleece or something down and then wash it everyday and clean the droppings and such?
i bet if ur ratties were litter-box trained, it be a whole lot easier

What I do with my rats is use fleece and towels to line the shelves and floors.  Then I have litter pans throughout, filled with Yesterdays News.  They don't always use the pans as well as they should, but it's pretty easy to keep relatively clean.

I use fleece or flannel with a chux pad underneath, it's that thing they put on hospital beds.  I change that every other day unless there's some sort of food/treat accident.   Yellow Cute Laugh  I have them in Martin's now, they can't go in the FN until October sometime after everyone's healed from neuters.  Gives me plenty of time to modify and decorate it.  I use yesterday's news in the litter pans.  I don't know WHY I every used bedding like Carefresh and stuff before, this is SO much easier and cleaner.

It's gonna be a while until they get to do that unfortunately.  I have to get the boys fixed in the middle of September, they'll be 4 months then.  Then 3 weeks after they will go in the FN with the girls...but I don't want anyone to get territorial, so noone is moving in it until everyone can at the same time, around October, probably the middle of the month or so.  I have surgery on Oct. 8th and won't be home until a week or so later.  This gives me a lot of time to modify and get it the way I want it.

i am thinking of getting a fn in another month or so. i only have two now, but if all goes well i would like to maybe add to the family! my one concern though is, the cage slots look a little big. i have girls, and they can squeeze out of their cage now. given they are only 13 weeks old, so i'm hoping they will maybe a get a little bigger and wont be able to fit. anyone have any problems with this?? i only have so much time a day to do the rattie hunt!

Oh there are many threads here about modifying a FN to suit ratties.

I have 9 girls, and all but 2 can get out of the FN. My two largest are 410gs, the rest are between 250 and 350, and they are about as full grown as they are going to get. I modified with hardware cloth.
