Has anyone ever tried grit paper for birds in their cages?  I thought of putting it on part of the bottom level and maybe it would file down their nails a little.  Does it sound like it may work?  I've heard putting a brick under the water bottle but thought this may work also if they don't tear it up.  Any suggestions? Huh

I'm not sure about grit paper, though if its safe for birds I don't see why not. I just put a rock (cleaned off from outside) in my girl's cage and it works pretty well. They really like marking it too, LOL.

Sand/grit paper actually isn't safe for birds. It hurts their feet, and most birds that people keep don't need grit (it can actually impact their crop and kill them).

I wouldn't use them. I keep a brick in my cage.

i wouldn't...just incase they eecide to chew it it could really tear their mouths up.  Also, if they walk on it too much it might hurt their feet too.  A brick or a rock is probably a better idea.  Mine really love rocks too.  Weird little things...I spend $20 on a huge bird toy and they want a ROCK!   Roll Eyes

I thought that my girls were the only ones that liked rocks. I used to have a rock in there and then I upgraded to a brick! lol. I swear they'll push each other off of it just to be able to sit on it and stare at you.  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

It doesn't work...at all. I was looking for something to use to file down my rat-girls' nails and a Petsmart saleslady suggested grit paper which I then tried. It didn't work at all.  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes I now have simply a largish rock by the cage door that seems to work quite well. Yellow Cute Laugh

Odd request- but, can people post pictures of their rocks?!? I have a brick and a couple rocks, but they're all pretty smooth. I just threw them in the cage to keep things cool. I imagine to keep nails filed a bit, you folks are using grittier bricks and rocks? Pix plz!

the rocks i use are actually pretty smooth too, but that makes it so their feet kind of slip off and they have to use their nails to hang on, thus dulling them out more, although i don't really even notice a difference, i still get very scratched up
