Hello, I am trying to redecorate my ratties' cage and need a bit of help.  I am trying to put some more hammocks/cubes/toys/etc in to keep them occupied, since their current set up is kind of blah right now, but I'm not sure how to go about it.  The girls have a Rat Manor from Petco, and it is pretty tall, but it is slightly narrow, and I'm having a hard time with the logistics of placing things. Pics of anyone's Rat Manors would be helpful too!  Don't worry, I know their cage isn't the most fun, but they do have toys and freetime out of the cage often.

I don't want to make their cage crammed, but I'd like to put in at least one hammock or cube type thing for them to sleep/play in. I plan to make them myself since finding a whole comforter bag full of fabric scraps at a thrift store uber-cheap, so links to different types of cubes and hammocks to make would be helpful as well! I plan on putting our new sewing machine to good use.

Here are photos of their current set up:

The whole cage, with baskets on the top and sides to play in

The first two levels: a water bottle, hidey log, and food dish.

Third and fourth levels, with their Suebee's mix bowl and kleenex box, hammock which goes across the whole top, and beside it is a quaker oats box they like to sleep in.

Thanks!!

maybe you could make a tunnel out of toilet paper rolls.... also, the hammock is adorable! did you make it yourself or buy it somewhere?

Thanks!!

We improvised a bit, put some towels down on the bars and some fun PVC pipe in.  They also are having fun "decorating" with a full box of kleenex.  I think we are going to try and make things out of dowel rods (ladders) and I'm going to try my hand at some cubes to see what we can come up with.

We have a gazillion LEGOs and I'm wondering if it is safe to make them things out of those?

The good thing about rats, is they can play with pretty much anything we think is garbage. Tissue boxes, toilet paper rolls, food cartons, etc. Also a very cheap way to decorate/stimulate your ratties!

I agree with Chevalrose, rats will play with anything.

Rock? check
old tennis ball? check
fabric scraps? check

To rats, anything can be made a toy! Yellow Cute Laugh

I've found that my ratties like hammocks in the corners also.

This one is made out a bandanna & zip ties.

Good Luck

I have a Rat Manor also.
My guys LOOOVE the running wheel, so I attached it (Hung it) at the bottom of the cage.  Their food/water is at the bottom also.
Here is a photo of the cage.

The inside arrangements are temporary, and it's missing quite a few things in there, because Page and Sabrina are in there right now, and Page has Babies.  I noticed that if I hang too many Hammocks / Sleeping Tubes, Pouches, etc, then Page doesn't seem to want to care for the Babies as well, and she prefers to sleep in a hammock with her sister, but after I removed 3 of their additional Hammocks (Leaving 1 hammock, and 1 Extra-Long Crawl-Thru Tube), they now BOTH sleep in the whelping box (with the Babies).

Less than a week ago, I Upgraded the Boys to a much larger cage (that I got on Craigslist for $40).
Here is a side-by side comparison of the Rat-Manor, and the New Cage for the Boys.

The cool thing is that I make all my own Hammocks, Sleeping Tubes, Pouches, etc.  I use Fleece, and there is NO sewing involved of any kind.
A short while ago, I made a few How-To Videos, and posted on another Forum, on how to make each item.
I'm wondering if I should do so here also.
Perhaps the Mods would want to "Sticky" it, so that everyone can take advantage of making their Own Bedding for Dirt-Cheap.

You can (seriously) deck out the ENTIRE cage, for $5 or LESS.  And you don't need a sewing machine.  Just Fleece, and a pair of Scissors.
I think the Large Boy's cage, cost me under $10 to completely FILL with Hammocks and Tubes and Pouches, etc.

We go to the thrift store and look to see what we can make into rattie toys. It's great because everything is really cheap. You can also make a great hammock/tube by cutting the legs off of an old pair of pants. Anything is fair game to be made into toys!

Thank you for all the replies! However, this thread is several months old and I have already changed their cage around.
