My three month old hairless baby, Henri, has a bloated abdomen. I thought it matched megacolon pretty well, so boy was I worried. I adopted him and his brother Remy from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter earlier this summer. Anesthesia adopted the other two boys. I took Henri to the vet today, crying because he might have to be euthanized. After a few x-rays, the vet came in and said Henri was really Henriette, and she was pregnant!!!!  Hyper I saw the x-rays, there appear to be six wee eepers. Holy moly I am so relieved and excited and deliriously happy! She's due in the next seven days. This will be my first live rat birth! I'll be keeping a boy and the others will be available for adoption when the time comes. Unfortunately, Remy is probably the dad, so the babies might have problems. Henriette will definitely be spayed after all the birth stuff.

Loving every day with my 7 ratlings

« Reply #1 on: August 24, 2008, 03:06:23 PM »

Don't get TOO excited, 3 months is very early for a lady rat to have babies.  You might not end up with 6 babies when it's all said and done.  Sorry.   Undecided

Yeah, there are risks. A baby having a baby Sad But still, I hope it's an easy pregnancy for her. I'm giving her lots of calcium-rich food. I saw the babies moving around in there. It's amazing. I hope there's a happy ending to all of this.

Gennaro's hungry!

« Reply #3 on: August 24, 2008, 05:03:23 PM »

You may want to talk to the shelter about this, also. Since I'm sure they are much more experienced in cats/dogs, they really need to be aware of sexing rodents so this kind of thing never happens again.

Henriette had the babies!!!! I just got back from a class and I found a bunch of squeaky eepers. I counted 12 babies! So far it looks like all are alive. Their little fingers, toesies, ears...wow. I'm floored. Photos will follow soon.

Cry Unfortunately, one baby did not make it. I buried him/her out in the backyard. On the other hand, the 11 others are doing well.

Pretty babies and pretty mama.  You will want to keep an eye on them, since sometimes naked does do not produce enough milk. Our old naked girl Smudge was a breeder before we got her and did fine, but there have been stories.  Good luck!

Awww, thanks. I've read that about hairless rats too. So far all the babies have nice looking milk bands, so Henriette will probably do a fine job. I'm always checking up on the babies.

I think that is just for 'true' hairless rats. More commonly you have 'double rex' hairless rats, which produce milk just fine, I believe. Henriette is probably a double rex.

You are quite possibly right, although Smidge was a true hairless (our current "hairless" isn't) and did do well.  Still, an ounce of prevention...

The remaining babies look marvelous! I'm sorry another one didn't make it.  Not that it helps, but losing several from a large litter is not uncommon.

I'm sorry to hear of the second little one's passing.  An aquaintance of mine had a "hairless" mama who ended up losing three out of a litter of fourteen, but the remaining bubs did quite well.  Good thoughts for Henriette and the rest of the babies.
