Captain was born on August 24, I got him from a rescue in PA in Oct.  He is a silver cap standard dumbo boy. Last monday I took him to a vet who is very knowledgable about rats, I have taken my other rats to her in the past. I took Captain in because he was tilting his head and I suspected an inner ear infection. Well the vet agreed that this was probably the case and started Captian on baytril and wanted to see him in a week which was today. Well over this past week I didn't think that the baytril was having any affect at all and today Captian was actually spinning alarmingly. And he seemed to be worse at the vets office, that might have been due to stress. Well she prescribed doxy for him today as well as staying on the baytril for 21 days. What do you all think? I am very worried about this little guy, he is the sweetest thing, gives kisses and is just a cuddle bug. I just want to make sure that we are not missing something.

Prednisone, which is an anti-inflammatory, is also frequently prescribed for ear infections. It helps get the swelling down inside his ears so he doesn't lose his balance quite as much. If the doxy doesn't show some improvement in a couple of days, you'll want to call your vet back (don't wait a week) and let her know. This article (click here) suggests some other antibiotics to try in combination with baytril/enrofloxacin. Good luck with him, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
