Well i have a jeneday conure about 7 or 8 years old it's a female i think (hope so lol) anyways her nails are really long and sharp and i can't get her to let me clip them. she recognizes nailfiles even when hidden in my hand because she always wants to know what i'm holding and she attacks nailclippers and the person whos holding them...i've tried holding her in a towel but she's too squeamish. does anyone have any suggestions? also she's bonded with my immediate family only my parents and me are the only ones in the house and she tends to have HUGE temper tantrums when anyone else even comes to the front door....is this normal? seriously what the heck! if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Take her to her vet! My exotics vet can clip toenails in seconds, and they're an old hand at it, so I never worry. They actually taught me to do it myself, but my birds are good about it. She may need to go to the vet every time.

What type of perches do you have?  I have my quaker on a variety, but I always have at least one concrete perch and one lava stone perch just for her nails.  I did have her nails trimmed once (my exotics vet did this for me) but since then, her nails have stayed pretty perfect thanks to the perches.

About the bonding - few questions first - How long have you owned her?  And do you ever take her out of the house?  It is rare for my doorbell to ring, so in order to keep Ozzie well socialized, I do things like take her to my humane society board meetings, trips to McDonalds drive thru, visit my husband in his office - all in a travel cage.  This has really helped with her.

Good Luck!

We've had her since she was a very tiny baby.....most of her life actually. We bought her from a respectable breeder in Shakespeare and she was hand raised. Yes we sometimes take her for car rides and such but she's still too loud to take anywhere in public like inside a building or something....maybe those carrying thingiesarea good idea and i could take her more places so she gets used to different people. Can anyone recommend what size i should buy?
Oh yeah and funny thing. I have one friend that Sammy absolutely ADORES. She even gets upset and runs away when i try to take her off lol. I dunno what it is but my bird has ISSUES haha.

Ozzies travel cage is actually a small keet cage.  It is just big enough for her body, and to stand up straight.

Do you keep Sammy by a window?  Sometimes that will help if she can see what is going on in the outside world.  And how much out of cage time does she get?  And when out of cage, is she always with someone or does she entertain herself on a playgym?

Sammy is somewhat near a window...enough to look out of but far away enough so that she won't get any drafts that come from the window in winter or at night that might go under her blanket. As for out of cage time.....hours upon HOURS AND HOURS of time out of the cage. She is a big sucky baby when it comes to the family. She will take naps with us by sleeping next to our heads on pillows she'll sit with us on the computer and she will play with us. The only thing is she doesn't occupy herself. if you leave her to her own devices she will ALWAYS try to find a way to climb, crawl, or fly to a person for attention. she is VERY well loved here Smiley

Could it be that she has bonded a little too much with the three family members? she seems to be very jealous even if our other bird gets attention (we have a single peach faced love bird, male, who has bonded to me because he was kept by himself at the pet shop) I think she's just very jealous that someone might be taking "mommy's" attention away from her...could this be the case? any thoughts?

Sounds like a jealous bird to me!  I would really try to get her interested in playgyms.  Does she like any toys?

toys....umm.......she likes things she can throw off of tables like plastic bottle caps and anything she can destroy by chewing lol. Would getting her interested in a play gym help with her behavior a little bit?

She just might learn to entertain herself if she has a playgym.  Either that, or she could get more exercise, then she would be to tired to cause a ruckus.  If might be worth investing 15 to 30 or so bucks in PVC and vet wrap and try making her a table top playgym.

There seems to be 2 school of thoughts on keeping birds by the windows. Some likes it because it lets the birds look outside and entertain themselves. Others feel that birds may feel insecure/threatened by whatever is going on outside because they don't have the concept of the window being there thus protecting them from the outside. I've heard of hawks flying by the window where the bird sits and scaring the crap out of them, etc. Just a thought.

IMO as important as it is to spend a lot of time with your birds, it is also critical to help them learn to occupy themselves without you. This is not only to save your sanity but it'll help your birds to be more emotionally stable. I don't want my birds to drive themselves nuts if I'm unable to spend all my time with them, or I want to be able to leave them with sitters/family members if I have to go away or something.

Playpen with lots of toys is great (my Ekkie is sitting on a homemade playpen right now attaking toys and eating treats) and it is not very expensive or difficult to make. Many people make theirs with PVC pipes, wood, branches, etc. Mine is a combination of the playtop we took off of top of Miki's cage, large wicker basket, and some branches we found in our backyard. Hang some toys, toilet papers (which Miki LOVES), put some treats in the bowls, and we're happy campers Smiley

I agree - Ozzie may be in front of a window all day, but she has ample things to hide behind if she does get freaked out.  Plus, most days I also drape a small dishtowel on one corner for added security.

Too true BabyBlue!!!  It really is so important that they learn to play and occupy themselves for periods of time!  Imagine spending the rest of your life with a toddler who demands to be held any time he is not sleeping!  Really, may be cute for the first hour or so, but quickly becomes one of the reasons so many birds are given up!

Thanks for the tips everyone! Do any of you have or know of a website that would help me make one of those tabletop gym thingies? i'm not sure how to start lol.

oh and is it normal for birds to recognize words that correspond with favourite foods? for example my bird goes nuts whenever she hears the words cracker, toast, and juice so we now have to SPELL them when she's around...bizarre huh? anyways thanks again and any websites would be appreciated!

I got some of my playgym ideas by searching through bird forums like Bird Board or Quaker Parrot Forum. I just search for "playgym", "playstand", etc.

Well, first bought a book on how to make tons of parrot toys.  (WASTE OF MONEY!!)  I then realized that I could pretty well copy anything just by looking at it.

So - after the holidays, if someone reminds me I'll be glad to snap some pictures of Ozzies playgym and put the dimensions and directions.  Just send me a PM or topic to remind my very forgetful brain!

YES! I'm always looking for ideas on making playgyms or toys. What if after the holidays we make a new thread where everyone can post their homemade bird stuff?

Good idea Smiley I'll put it in the Home Tweet Home section... since toys are sort of like furniture? LOL
