Ozzie's silver colored closed band is engraved with the following:

JH FL 98 5

I was told that JH is the breeder, FL the state, 98 the year and 5 is maybe her egg number or hatch number.

One of the most important things is this - her band is closed.  This means she was not wild caught, but was bred and banded as a young chick.

Sadly, there is no central registration for bird bands.  There are a couple of different ones, but they seem to be more for that specific company, not the overall public.

Miki's band reads "KMW NYS 0 05" - born in NY state in 2005. I guess KMW being the aviary he was born. I know he was originally from a breeder altho I do not know where since he was rehomed to me.

Ekkie's leg bad reads "TL PA 05 6" - born in PA in 2005. TL probably indicates his breeder and 6 is the cluth number?

Both have closed bands. And since we're talking about leg bands, how do you feel about them as far as the safety is concerned? I've heard some horror stories of birds hurting themselves because of these bands, and some breeders no longer put them on their babies. Miki doesn't seem bothered by it, except for when he taking a shower at which time he always cleans under his bands, but the new guy's band looks a bit big IMO. I've heard of people going to the vet's to get them removed and was wondering if anyone else was concerned about them.

I discussed removing Ozzie's band with my vet, but we decided not to.  Ozzie has been fine with it for over 7 years now.  I've heard the horror stories, but I think I'm more afraid of loosing Ozzie.  Let's face it - Quakers look alike!

I've looked at and thought about microchips - still undecided.  I love them for dogs.  Maybe some year I'll do that for Ozzie.

I think alot depends on how much and how hard your parrot plays.  While your new boy may look funny now, he'll soon grow into it.  I think you just have to do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Yeah I guess I'll see if he grows into his band. The thing that makes me hesitant about removing them (besides the cost, putting the bird thru the whole ordeal, etc) is that if I ever lost my birds leg bands will make it clear that they belong to someone. Not everyone would even think that birds can be microchipped, but maybe they'll think twice if the birds had leg bands. Altho I've heard many people simply KEEPING the birds (especially if they're expensive birds) they find rather than trying to find their owners... Worry

I know!  People will put out all kinds of flyers/ads for found fidos - but how many flyers have you ever heard about that read something like this:

FOUND: One friendly Blue & Gold Macaw - steps up, great with dogs/kids/cats, talks up a storm and loves showers.  Please call 555-555-5555 to ID and bird will be returned to you.

I've tried to cover my tush in case Ozzie gets lost - I always carry pictures of Ozzie and the local stores and vets know me by name and a few have my phone number in case they have a rescue that needs help.
All I can say is - WING CLIP - WING CLIP - WING CLIP!!!  Not a guarantee, but something is better than nothing.

I had the bands removed from both of my cockatiels.  I worked at an avian and exotic animal hospital and saw too many injuries from the bands.  It only costs about $15 to have them removed so it was no big deal.  I keep the flight feathers clipped and the windows have screens, etc.  I am thinking abou microchipping.  A vet tech does grooming at a local store once a month and also does the microchipping.  It makes me nervous.  That needle is quite large for such a small bird.  When my cats, dog, rabbits have been chipped, they were all knocked out during their spays or neuters so they didn't feel a thing.
