Watch Sticky Grow. :)

Well, I don't have any rats and wasn't going to get anymore until my ferrets are gone. BUT I went in this little petstore today just to look around and I saw a glue trap sticking out from one of the shelves and it looked like something was on it. So I went over and looked and there was a little rat stuck on it. My mother and I went over and complained and all they said was they have small animals escape some times so they have to catch them. I tried telling them other things they could do, but they of course could care less. I asked if I could have the little guy who looked like he'd die before I got home and they sad yeah. He had to have been there for days, he's so skinny dehidrated (sp?). I got him home and peeled him off the trap and sprayed him down with cooking spray and sat there getting all the glue off. I then gave him a bath and then repeated it all again once more. He looks all greasy still, but he's clean. I used a syringe to give him some water and gave him some small doggie cookie bits (That's all he'd take and right now he can have whatever he'll eat) I tried babyfood, but he didn't want any. On top of being dehidrated and starving he had mites
I haven't seen anymore since he had 2 baths and 2 spray downs with cooking spray. Poor thing looks like a drowned rat lol, he's dry but his hair still looks oily. I don't know what I'm going to do with him. I want to keep him, but I'm not sure because that will mean I have to get a second rat once he's bigger and healthier. I just hope he makes it, I'll be so sad if he doesn't.
I took some pictures of him. He is dry just greasy looking, his hair should be better in a couple days. Introducing Sticky (sorry I had to
) Please don't look at my dirty desk, I know I have to clean I've just been lazy.

How awful! Sticky is a lucky boy to have found you! You can try giving him some nutrical or get some soy baby formula powder and mix it with warm water. You can melt a little nutrical in there too. He would probably like that and it will help get weight on him and fill/warm his little tummy. Poor little sweety... I would probably report that petstore. People suck. GAH

I'd definately recommend NutriCal. It works wonders on skinny rats. I got a couple of rescues in like that and it was just a few days before there was a world of difference.
Was the store part of a larger company? I'd call and complain. It is inhumane to leave a rat stuck to a trap like that. But if you talk to them, tell them in an aspect they'll understand- Money! Say you thought it was very disgusting and unsanitary and that the thought of a rat being trapped like that where customers could get stuck to the same trap, or bitten, or smell it after death, is just wrong. Make them think you won't continue shopping there because you are afraid you'll get a sticky trap with a dead mouse or rat on you or something.
They ignore you if you talk about inhumane and cruel treatment. But if you talk money and how other customers would feel, you're more likely to get their attention.

Rats love chocolate Ensure also. Just pour some in a dish or put some in a syringe and they usually lap it right up.
What an adorable little Sticky boy. So glad you got him to a safe place. I pray that he pulls through

Poor baby! I think glue traps are the most inhumane thing ever invented. I wish the inventors could spend several days glued to a human sized one!
Please keep us updated on little Sticky. I've never had a rat who won't take soy baby formula. Try to get him to take it on his own. If you use a syringe, be very careful and use small amounts at a time. It's easy to give them too much and have fluids get into lungs.

Ugh. It's unbelievable that a person with that kind of attitude would actually be in charge of a
pet
store. But enough said about that. Thank goodness you were there that day. He's adorable, and I really hope you can get him to eat/drink something. Poor little guy has got to be so traumatized. I
love
his name. We took in a stray cat when my daughter was 3, and she named him Sticky because he would stick to us, and not want to be separated. You may find the same thing with your Sticky.

Well, he's doing better than yesterday. I was afraid he wouldn't make it through the night, but he did.
When I came home I checked on him and he ate the piece of my breakfast sandwich I gave him before I went to work. He doesn't look as skinny as he did yesterday either. I just finished feeding him the babyfood mix and he LOVED it. I fed it to him off of my finger and he was just going to town.
AND he didn't fight me holding him today. Yesterday everytime he got close enough to something he tried to take off, not very well because his back legs weren't working right for him since they had been stuck down for days. Today he walked around on my arms and chest and cleaned his little face
. His legs are much better today he's still a little wobbly, but he can move them the right way yesterday they wanted to lay straight out.
I wasn't sure if I'd keep him because I really didn't want to bring in anymore pets until some of the ones I have go to the bridge, but how can I get rid of him now? He got me today when he didn't try to get away from me the whole time. So I'm stuck with him lol. Now I'm going to have to search for 1 buddy soon. I already saw one on craigslist, but I am broke for about 2 weeks since I had 2 emergency vet visits within a month and bills.
Oh well I'm sure I can find him someone eventually.

Sticky traps should be banned! Thank goodness you found him and rescued him! I'm glad to hear he's recovering so nicely. Human doctors recommend a diet of rice when people are recovering from near-starvation because it's so easy to digest. You could use baby cereal since it's made with rice. Pedialyte will help him recover all the good electrolytes he needs. And in a couple of days, I'd recommend adding some probiotics to help restore his gut flora. (The chain pet stores have this in the kitten medicine section by the milk replacer).
I'd wait a couple of weeks at least before getting him a buddy. Let him recover completely before he has to meet a stranger.
And maybe you could find a
live trap
to give to the pet store.

Thanks.
I know he can't have a buddy now, but I figured if I got one now and he stayed at my brother's house I could do the quarantine there while this guy recovered for 3 weeks and then they could be introduced once he was recovered and the other one would have already been through quarantine and he wouldn't have to wait another 3 weeks after he recovered to get a pal. I told them about live traps, but I can't afford to get that for them at least not right now.

So I'm stuck with him lol.
I found this funny in a sad, ironic kind of way.
In the mean time, to help him keep warm, have you put in a warm rice sock or anything with him? I find rice socks to be great...you can get them the right temperature, not too hot, and you don't have to worry about electricity.

No he has a little towel in his cage and he's in my room and I have the space heater on. He feels warm when I hold him and I could wear shorts and a tank top in here. So I don't know if that's necessary.

Words just cannot describe how disgusted I am with that store and the people who run it. That is just unacceptable!
As if it's not already bad enough that clearly they can't keep their animals contained but to use glue traps to catch them and let them suffer a painful death is just unbelievable!
I'm so glad you saw the little one and took him home! I'm sending lots of good thoughts his way that hopefully he'll make a full recovery! Please keep us posted!
