genital myco and since they are sisters they may have similar weak immune systems?
How's the bleeding now?  You put the 2nd sister on baytril as well?
They have had more problems than the other two. Mina has had myco flare-ups on occasion, as has Buffy. Buffy usually gets over them very fast, much faster than Mina.
The bleeding has stopped on both rats. And yes, Mina is also on Baytril.
What is genital myco?

mycoplasmosis is not just respiratory...it can also cause genital infections as well.

from ratguide.com

In genital infections, the organism may be a cause of pyometra or purulent endometritis (inflammation of the lining of the uterus), salpingitis (inflammation of fallopian tubes), and perioophoritis (inflammation of ovaries). The signs may range from clinically inapparent symptoms to abdominal distention or signs of blood-tinged uterine discharge. Hematuria (blood tinged urine) from a concurrent urinary tract infection may also be present.

My rat Cinnamon started with the same thing yesterday.  Undecided My vet saw her right away and put her on the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin. Only her bleeding hasn't gotten better in 24 hours, it was actually heavier this morning so she is having an emergency spay tomorrow.

I have a topic about it here:

http://www.ratchatter.com/index.php?topic=1396.msg11133#new

And here: http://tunaynamahal.blogspot.com/2008/05/off-to-vet.html

I stumbled upon this thread & forum when I was looking online for information about bleeding in female rats.

I personally am not an advocate of ciprofloxacin myself.  its the human grade of enrofloxacin (baytril) but nowhere near as effective for rats.

Good luck with the spay!!  Cheesy

Thanks. The Vet just called me and they said Cinnamon's spay went well. The doctor didn't find anything abnomal inside so he won't run blood tests. He thinks the bleeding was somehow abnormally related to going into heat. So strange. I guess since she is spayed she won't be able to go into heat anymore... so I guess that should resolve the bleeding issue. I have to pick her up around 5pm. My poor baby.

That sounds unlikely.  There could be a growth else where, so be on the lookout for more bleeding!

Glad she made it through ok!

Sinse I last posted (which was a while ago) three of my rats started bleeding. The vet tried them first on Baytril, which didn't help, so he then switched to Clavamox. He read through a few different rat books, but couldn't find anything. He has a friend at A&M University in College Station that is a rodent expert, so he gave him a call today to ask what this could be. The guy said aside from the usual causes there is a bacteria that they can catch from certain types of lice that infect the blood, and this could be it. The guy said that it did not sound like pyometra (sp?) because I would have seen other signs by now, and their still acting perfectly normal exept for the bleeding. He said the only medication that can cute this is Tetricyclin (sp?). So i'm picking some up tomorrow. Hopefully it helps.
I'm just stumped at this point. They are eating, playing, not losing any weight, it's just the bleeding. And this has been going on for over a month, so if it were pyometra I think there would have been other symptoms by now.

I'm so sorry for you Rodentgirl.  Embarrassed

Having my Cinnamon spayed fixed the bleeding issue for her. She's been very healthy since her surgery and been back for a few check ups to the vet. She was spayed back in May.

Another nice thing was she's not as aggressive as she once was. She's very mellow & affectionate. My cuddle bug now.

I hope you find out what's causing this in your ratties.

Good news! I hope it stays that way! I don't know why my girl was bleeding either and my vet was baffled as well. It just started out of nowhere. But so far so good for my Cinnamon. She was losing weight when she was sick and bleeding but now she's a little chunky monkey! Good luck!

I think what really baffled my vet is that the three rats were bleeding, but none of them were losing weight or acting sick at all. I even weighed them everyday.
I'l have to ask him for some more info on the blood bacteria that his friend told him about. He said it comes from lice, which my girls had about a year ago.

I had to put Mina to sleep yesterday. She was starting to lose weight, and aside from the vaginal bleeding she also had some tumors, one the size of a ping pong ball.
The vet asked me to leave her over night so he could perform a necropsy to see what was causing the bleeding. He said it was caused by cysistic(sp?) ovaries. So I do finally have some answeres, but at a very sad price.
The good thing is that I have not seen bleeding on either Buffy or Lenore in about a month.

RIP my sweet Mina Cry

My rat just went thru this.  I thought she kept having urinary tract infections and would treat that--and it would stop for a while.  Finally this last time I noticed it was not coming out when peeing, but just coming out (like your picture).  The vet had me try an antibiotic first anyway.  I did, it didn't stop, and he removed the uterus (which he found was very very infected as described by the ones in the know above).  The next three weeks she WAS eating more and I noticed she was getting fat.  I thought it was because she was eating more--then she started bleeding again--with no uterus.  I took her back and he felt a mass--did surgery two days ago--it was a bleeding tumor that had grown where the uterus had been.  It said it was a fast-growing tumor.  He removed it and stitched her up--but while she was waking up, she suddenly grew weak and died.  They were right there trying to revive her, but she is gone.  It was all such a surprise to me--but I knew she wasn't feeling good--she only showed it that morning (and she had an appointment for that afternoon) the day after she began spotting again.  We rushed her to the vet and he operated on her right then.  But it was too late for my little Undot, my "heart" rat.  Scruffy (my 2 yr 11 mos old) and I miss her so much.  Good luck to you.  But I agree it is imperative that it is removed and then watched carefully.  I didn't know about the further possibility of problems with tumors or infections.

I'm sorry about your little girl. Unfortunately surgery is not an option for the last two. My vet, who is truly the best vet I've ever seen, does not perform spays on rats. Only one vet in town spays rats, and he's known my small pet owners as a butcher (he's killed way more than saved). The closest ones are 200 miles away.
One of my rats did die, she had cysts in her ovaries. The other two have been doing very well, I haven't seen bleeding now for a month.
