I recommend reading through all the FN threads...there is already a lot of information there.  And, if you have babies, you're going to have to modify yours so they can't get through the bars.

The general opinion here is that its a great cage, but its not right for everyone.
PLEASE check out the FN modification post about modifying the bar spacing for babies.  Small rats can get through the bars of the FN and can get themselves seriously hurt.  If they can get their head out, the rest can follow.

I like my FN cage but they can be very dangerous.  I will speak from experience here:  When you close the doors make sure that nobody's head is in the way or stuck between the door and the shelf/level thing.  I lost a rat because I didn't realize his head was there when I closed the door and it was stuck right in that little spot between the door closing and the shelf thing.....just be careful.

I love my FN, I currently have 5 living in it. Like someone else said, do be careful when closing the doors that are by the shelves. I've never had a rat get hurt (i'm paranoid, so I always make sure all rat body parts are out of the way before closing the door), but I've read where rats have gotten hurt or even died.

Just so we don't start a panic here all cages are dangerous.  I almost amputated a rats tail with the martin's door not realizing I had closed it in.

I almost decaputated a rat with a super pet door not realizing he was still hanging out the side while chasing his brother back in the other side.

So all cages require you to be careful and watch what you are doing.

As for the FN I agree check the all of the FN threads.  I will just say that I have two FNs and you couldn't pry them out of my cold dead hands I love them that much when comparing them to all of the zillion other cages I have used in the past.

I'm not trying to start a panic here.  I agree, the FN is an awesome cage. Even after that horrible accident I still love my cage and I'm actually going out and buying another one tonight for my two ferrets.  I just can't go without sharing my experience so that maybe I can convince atleast one person to be very careful with this cage.  And, you are right...it's not just this cage..it's all cages but, I don't have experience with other cages...only this one.  I'm not saying not the get the cage, just be careful with it!

Heart my FN's!

I have 3. 1 for my 2 rattie boys and 2 (connected) for my guinea pigs. I have had the ratties cage since Nov. and love it to pieces. The others I just got a week ago but even with horribly messy pigs, its a lifesaver.

I'm not Daisy, but  also have the pans from bassequipment.com, and I lay down several thicknesses of newspaper, then fill them with aspen shavings.  It stays so nice and fresh for at least a week, and I agree...it makes a GREAT cage even BETTER!

Hey Rebecca -

I was using aspen, but have had SO many problems with mites and lice and with not enough freezer space I have started using Yesterday's News and I Heart it.  I noticed the cage smells fresher long, lol!

I love the original FN, but I always found myself frustrated when the liners on the pans were all chewed up.  Now that I have the deep pans, I don't think I'll switch back!

I tried YN in my FN once, and loved the non-chewing, and better smelling aspect, but it was a huge mess wth the shallow pans, and it uses so much!  Don't you have to buy YN every week, practically?

Well, I have the 2 large pans in the FN and the R695, I did use almost a full bag this week.  I think I am going to layer the bottom of the pans with newspaper and they just use a thinner layer of YN and see how that goes. Smiley
