Ugh, so I found a lump on Gus right nextt to his penis. It's kind of soft and it's round. Of corse this has to be labor day so I can't take him to the vet, I have to wait until tomorrow to call.

How can you tell the difference between a possible abcess and a tumor?

I'd have him sit in a warm sitz bath for a few minutes. My guess is it's an abscess. It could be a tumor, but not as likely as a male anatomy problem.

So I gave him a sitz bath in case it was an abcess (we're still going to make an apointment with the vet). He was SUCH a good boy, and was so adorable sitting in a tupperware container on my kitchen counter that I had to share the cute :-)

Is this an evil eye or what?

Awwww...what a good little boy he was!  Yep, that definitely looks like the evil eye that he's giving you!  I can almost hear him saying, "you just wait until I get out of here, Mom!"

So I called the vet today and she said go ahead and treat it like an abcess. So tonight I sitz bathed him again and it ruptured...and it was green...like lime green.

Is that normal!?

I got it all out, rinsed it with peroxide and water. Also...I can't quite tell where the "out" hole is because he's still got fur there...should I clipper him a little bit or is the hair a good protector for the area?

I wouldn't use peroxide to clean it because peroxide is pretty harsh to tissue.  Maybe you could get some chlorhexadine from your vet and dilute it 1:10 (one part chlorhexadine to ten parts water) and clean the area with that.  Since the abscess is so close to his penis, I'd be hesitant to clip the fur with anything so that you don't accidentally injure him further.  I think if you just keep doing the sitz baths, you'll be ok.  Smiley

You could even do the sitz bath in the chlorhexadine or in a 2% solution of Nolvasan (your vet will have some). He may actually keep it cleaned out himself. I had a couple of boys who had abscesses in this general area and they cleaned things out themselves.

I diluted the peroxide with water 3/1. I've never heard of either of those solutions...are they like saline?

Nope - the Novalson is a vet wash - you can get it at any tack shop (used on horses a lot) or feed store.  I've never looked for it at a pet store but I suppose it's possible, especially if they carry horse supplies.

Nolvasan is the brand name of chlorhexadine (generic name).  They're an antiseptic type solution.  I didn't know that you could find it where horse supplies are sold...thanks for that tip!  It's a really great solution to have on hand for whenever you need to clean a wound.  The nice thing about it is that it has a residual effect.  When you apply it to the wound, the antiseptic/antibacterial effect lasts for about 3 days.

I would probably go with buying some Epsom salt and using that instead of table salt.

my dynie had  the same thing. I thought it was a tumor and was so glad it wasnt. It ended up opening on its own and boy did it stink bad. I held a warm wet cloth on it everyday to open it up and then flushed it 2x per day with a solution of 1 part peroxide to 10 parts water. and I also squeezed it out to expel pus. I then would put a little bit of neosporin on it. He is fine and didnt need antibiotics.

So now it's been a little over a week, and there is no longer anything to squeeze out. The bump is very small and semi-hard. Is it just healing on it's own now since I can't rinse it?

A sitz bath is a small bath for soaking in. The pictures above are a great example of a rattie sized sitz bath.

If your girl is having a problem, it could be something deeper in her uterus. I'd have that checked by a vet because a sitz bath won't cure the problem. This guy had a skin abscess which is easily fixed with a sitz bath. A uterine infection is much more serious.
