I got bitten :: Progress Report ::

Things are coming on, overall, pretty well with my four boys. Two are starting to socialise really well, one's still quite nervy and skittish but getting there. I'd noticed the last of them was getting a bit nippy, but it's usually my clothes and some of them just do that, without realising there's human underneath. I realised he was going more and more for my fingers, and started to take good care in cleaning my hands before handling them, in case there's any food residue on them. Earlier, with clean hands, I offered him a bit of rice cake (which he normally polishes off) and he sniffed it once, then moved straight to my hand - not even the finger & thumb that was holding the food - and nipped at me. I eeped at him and backed off, mainly because I had another boy trying to devour my roman blind. A short while later, while they were all out on the sofa, he was nipping at me again. I put my hand on a cushion (I leave two piled up for them to hide under and play around) and he darted out a good 4 inches and chomped straight on my index finger. I sort-of-eeped, but had to get up and put a plaster on it so I wasn't able to do any more. I put them all back, then.
The advice I had from this board before, when I had a biter, was to eep as soon as it happened*, which I've been doing since he started nipping at me. However, I don't know if it's very effective, because I had throat surgery last year which affected my vocal cords, and I can't really squeak, it comes out more like a squawk
Does anyone have any opinion that this would make a difference?
The other problem is that they are all identical. All of them. I can tell Chestnut apart, as he's ruby-eyed. Sprocket is kind of a little bit different, but you have to be really looking at them. So it could be Chip, Dunk or Sprocket. I need to be able to tell, in order to work on the right one as soon as poss. Does anyone have any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is finding some way to dye them, which strikes me as rather dodgy and potentially harmful too.
Any ideas? comments?
Right now I have the confidence of a tiny thing, but tomorrow is another day. The worst thing is I don't want to be - I
can't
be - nervy of
three
of them. If I could identify which one it was, then...
(* The advice to eep, and to do 'enforced socialisation' or whatever it's called, worked wonders and cured my last bitey boy very well. I can't remember what it's called, but it's something that was recommended to me on here - hold the rat gently for at least 10 mins each 'out' time, not letting them run away or hide; eventually they realise that being with you is not going to harm them. 10 mins of trying to hold a squirmy furkid is... funny! I worked up from 5 to 10 to 15 mins and within the fortnight this boy was a different rat. I'll be needing to do it with Chestnut at least, I think.)
*sigh* I could do without this, as I got the stress of my business laptop misbehaving when I have a major bit of work to do, and a funeral to go to on Sat

Does that holding thing work for flighty rats or is that for biters only? Rain attacked my sock and pant legs today (with flesh in them!). This might be her way of saying "pick me up nao!!" since when i said ouch (I didn't know you were supposed to 'eep' at them; i was responding to being nipped by being human and saying ouch) she came rushing to the side of my desk chair and stood on her hind legs. She wants my attention all the time. But my other rat is like totally afraid of me. She's fine in-cage, and out of cage she will come up to me to get food, and if Rain is around me occasionally. Other than that, she acts as if I'm totally going to root her out of her hiding place and beat her or something. Any noise I make, she gets startled, and if I'm moving around my room while they're out, she darts away and hides. When I pick her up she's squirmy and unhappy and does everything in her power to reach the floor again... but then will totally turn around and come at me for food? I'm so confused with her! The other day I caught her while she was sleepy and she had no problem with being held and stroked for a few minutes, so I don't know what her problem is. It seems to have something to do with free-range time. If I hold her bunches, will her fear improve? I've had them for a couple months; they shouldn't have a problem with me anymore. They've been held bunches, but lots of people, and definitely know me. i dunno.

I have several PEW's. The first 3 were brothers, so I marked them with a mustache trimmer. One had a shaved patch on his rump, another had a shaved line across his back, and the third had a shaved spot behind his ear. Right now we have a new set of PEW brothers, and thier PEW sisters, 3 each. We're currently using food dye to mark them, it works pretty well. The blue, pink and purple work the best, and you don't have to use a different color each time, just mark them in a different area. It stains the fur, and if they groom before it dries, they just get the color on their face and paws. We normally keep them out until the dye dries, and we'll use a kleenex to soak up some of the extra. Be prepared to get dirty, and wear an old shirt that you don't mind being turned into different colors.

Presumably, both - but you'd have to do a deal of work on the biter first, I should guess, otherwise it might become a fight.
Yes, if you eep, you're speaking their language. Rats are puzzled, I think, by us wearing clothes, and don't always realise we're under them. I think also though you'll find a huge amount of rats have a big deal with stockinged feet - the foot of course sweats quite a bit during the day and it must smell like mad for a lil critter. Sometimes, also, their nipping is an attempt at grooming. Either way, the general advice with biters is to hold your ground an eep when it's painful.

Oh, good call, Claymore - never thought of trimming them!
I have used food dye before, but felt it was a bit mean. It certainly made my girl obsessed with cleaning herself! Poor love.
I removed my plaster this morning. On the outside of it I could see where the blood had soaked... it was in a perfect heart shape. I'm kind of touched by this, like it's giving me a message that at the end of the day I have to conquer this with love.
Thx for your replies...

Yep, my rats will nip at my feet when I'm wearing socks too. So I always make sure to take them off before I go into their room when they're out for free range time.

Just to let you all know how this biting issue is getting on.
I've worked out it is indeed Sprocket, due to 'blueing' two of them with food-colouring (even though they keep grooming it off!).
Last week he bit me again, aggression not over-enthusiasm, and also bit my friend twice (although it's kind of her own silly fault, as I did warn her - twice - that I wasn't sure which was the biter and they weren't pets, yet, but were still rescues, IYSWIM). I also saw a tiny neck-wound on one of the other boys and have seen him being needlessly bossy around them. (In fact, when he does it now, Dunk runs to me and hides in my hoody, as he knows I'll keep them separate!)
So when he bit me again I was able to know exactly which one it was, so I eeped loudly, grabbed him and dumped him straight back in the cage, shut the door, and made an obvious show of the rest getting treats. (Not bad going when I was bleeding quite profusely!)
After ten minutes I let him out again, and when he came to me I wrapped my hands inside the cuffs of my hoodie and held him solidly and still - albeit with a lot of squirming on his behalf! - for at least five minutes. He wasn't at all happy with this turn of events, but since then he's not bitten me at all.
All of them nip me - put their teeth around, say, my fingers - sometimes a little hard, but never to break the skin. Sprocket's been no different from the rest but I've certainly not had any more of the out-and-out overt aggression. If it happens again, he'll be 'caged' for 5 and 'pinned down' again for 5.
Generally speaking I think they're coming along very well, and I predict that in another month they'll be as soft as anything - they already come running to me when they see me, even if I'm not 'clucking' to say I'm bringing treats.
Can you believe I've not even had them for four weeks?
I'm very proud of them all.

Congrats on the progress!
It sounds like you're doing an awesome job. And handling that stress very very well. Wanna train me how to be more level headed?

oooo, this whole thread was very informative.
I've been having troubles with a nipper (never hard enough for blood), and I was thinking of posting a topic, but I think I'll try all thse first...
Now I know why he always goes for my feet, haha. drives me insane. And holding them for a few minutes each time would be good for my boys. They aren't very cuddly (except on their terms ie. climbing up me to sit on my shoudler when they feel like it)

Hey folks, thanks all for the comments & feedback.
I have been keeping up with the observation and general identification of triggers, and have noticed that I probably contribute a little bit to some of his aggression.
Owners of several rats (esp boys) will know how the Alpha (or would be Alpha, lol) likes to square up to rivals by barging with the flank. Meek rats will immediately submit, but rivals may carry on barging back or they rear onto their hind legs for a boxing match before one wins and pins the other down. Hopefully this is all done without fur flying!
I realised that when my boys are out, I do like to stroke them all as they run by. Sometimes I absent-mindedly just put out a hand and plonk it on their bums/lower backs. Of course, for little Sprocket, what could this say? I am barging you and want a fight.
When I grab him accidentally (thinking he's one of the other ones) without being aware of this, it can freak him out. I think he's actually a little frightened of me
However, yesterday I was able to top up his 'blue' without him once being stroppy. He squirmed a whole heap - but wouldn't you?
- I think it was just because he wanted to play and I wasn't letting him!
So I would like to say here that I wonder if my attitude/behaviour is half the problem, and will be working on that too.
I get the feeling one day we'll be inseparable.
