;DI volunteer at the San Francisco Animal Care and Control in the small animal room, and I occasionally foster young teen rat moms and their babies, as the shelter does not have the staff and capacity to socialize mom and her pinkies. On Saturday, 8/30, a lovely young mom gave birth to 12 babies. 2 babies didn't make it in the first 24 hrs, but mama milkbar, whom friends have named 'Brittany' (I watched her give birth that afternoon, and it was an 'oops I did it again' moment- 12 times!) is a great mom- all 10 little indians have big ole milk bellies. They'll be ready by early October- no sexes yet (I can't guess til they are about 2 wks), but a mixture of berkshires and hoodies- all dark eyed I believe.

Adoptions are through ACC- $15/piece, prefer them to go in same sex pairs, adoption fee includes the spueter when they are of age, etc etc- the usual drill. Feel free to email me with questions, or if you are so inclined to reserve any bubs. Please be aware that mom, who can't be more than 3-4 months, needs a home too.

Pictures!! (thanks Rattiemama and Rattiemama's hubby for doing a photo shoot while I was working!)

new album included; Babies are 11 days old; if I have it right, there are 6 girls/4 boys (one boy MIGHT be a girl- stay tuned!). Mama Brittany is also becoming much less anxious, and continues to be a great mom.

**grr, I've fixed it I think...**

Aww. The mom is still a baby! That just breaks my heart.

I wanted to let you know, I can't see the photo album because you have to have an account on the website to view it.

I have an account but the pop-up window says the link isn't right. Sad Roar, I'm in Santa Rosa too (~1:30 from SF) and am hoping to get myself my first pair of rats as an early-ish x-mas present to myself.

Maybe because you have an account? Sometimes they leave you logged in all the time so it would show up for oyu but not others.

aussiefreak101, we're in the same town!  Grin Nice to see a fellow Santa Rosa rat lover on here!

Maybe mine is just causing me trouble...sometimes it likes to do that. It still says it doesn't work. I could try to search for 'em but that's a needle in a haystack trying to figure your keyword lol.

=^_^= Yay, not alone!

ok, it appears that there really is a problem with shutterfly, not just me (whew). I know I've pasted the page before with no problems, so give me til the end of the day to see if I can get the link to work...if not, well...there will be a plan B

in the mean time, please enjoy 5 photos from the album:

BABIES ARE 14 DAYS OLD TODAY, 9/13. They just can't wait for those eyes to open! I had a photoshoot last night, and they have become squirmy little bugs! Mama Brittany is much friendlier and calmer than when she first arrived; I think the stress of being brought to the shelter, having babies 5 days later, and having her and her newborns brought to my house that day was a huge amount to deal with, but she has a lot of resiliency! I hope her babies take after her in her intelligence and fortitude.

My partner and I are interested in perhaps adopting some of the rats, but I am unable to contact you. Is there some trick to sending a private message? When I try to create a message, it says "An Error Has Occurred! You are not allowed to send personal messages", and when I try to view your profile it says "An Error Has Occurred! Many apologies, but you can't view just any profile".  Am I doing something wrong?

The problem with sending PMs and looking at profiles has to do with how few posts you have. Because of some spammers in the past there is a minimum number of posts you must make before you can view profiles or send PMs. It is a low number, but you should be able to receive PMs. Hopefully you got Meeshki's email and all is well.

These babies are going to be great pets. I've played with them twice already and I know Meeshski's track record with babies.

About what date do you think the babies will be available for adoption? ^_^

Right now I'm saying the weekend of Oct 4+5- they will be 5 weeks old. If they keep up their growth spurt and their health as they are, that date will stick. If there are any that don't seem 'ready' I'll hold them back for a week. I know lots of folks like to wait til they are 6 weeks, but I have to balance that with the fact that I have 10 babies and a mom I want to see adopted, and the fact is that once babies don't look so babyish, their chances of adoption decrease (so the folks in rescue tell me)...I won't bring them back to the shelter if they don't get adopted, nor do I want to double the number I rats I have- I have 10 of my own, including an elderly one, so my house is kind of full! If you are interested in meeting them beforehand and reserving any, PM me- I'm planning a meet up at the shelter for that, most likely this sat.

one of the 'dotted' boys (they aren't quite big enough to call them spots)!

These babies and their mom are absolutely adorable!  i_heart_rats and I saw the babies Saturday and will be adopting the four boys.   The little ones climbed on us, licked us, tried to tunnel up our sleeves, and fell asleep in our laps.  They are all beautiful, playful and friendly, and Meeshski is taking wonderful care of them. The babies are still so little. I can't wait to see them again when they are ready to be adopted!

new pics of the 6 available girls; there is a reason they are all blurry, these girls are at the height of their popcorning, road runner *MEEP, MEEP!!* selves! 5 berk girls, 1 hoodie- hard for me to tell a few of the berks apart, since sitting still is not a lesson they've learned. PM me if interested!

that hooded girl is the ringleader!! Cheeky

Hi,
Newbie here, so I can't PM you. I'm interested in one of your Berk female babies. Hopefully the one with the big white belly. I have a young female hairless that I'm trying to find a buddy for. I'm out of Redwood City and would be able to pick her up when ready. You can email me at neonstina at yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Christina

I just got back from Meeshski's house and saw the babies. They are so active and adorable! Their personalities are really starting to shine. Here are some pictures of the available baby girls!

Girl 1 - slightly out of focus:

Girl 2 is quite calm and a good poser:

Girl 3 was more interested in wiggling and exploring than having her picture taken:

Girl 4 is just as cute as can be and likes to nibble fingernails:

Girl 5 was so sweet cuddling in the towel and enjoying a head rub before this picture:

And then there's the hoodie . . . she's trouble but what a personality! She just has to be into everything.

Guess I won't have anymore fingernails later. Harry likes to trim my nails also.  Cheeky  I can't wait for Harry's sister.  Blue Dumbo Smile
But, I wanted to let you know that I will be out of town this coming weekend.  Sad So I won't be able to pick up the little one until after that.
Please let me know if this is a problem.

And for anyone interested, Here's Harry ! toothy4

9/28 CURRENT UPDATE: Of the 10 babies and mom, all boys are adopted. Of the 6 girls, Neonstina has one particular girl reserved, and responders on Craig's list are are interested in a total of 4 girls (no particular reservations, and one of those is a definite maybe). So, that leaves 2 girls and mom...hopefully. My experience with C's list is that half of them are totally awesome people who will follow through, and half are...flakes. I've pulled the C's list ad for those who are in the Bay Area for now (trying to avoid getting more of the insulting responders), but know that a few girls and sweet, sweet Brittany (who bravely continues to nurse despite their obvious use of teeth!) is available.

?those pictures? they are coming...waiting for a friend to help me wrangle them...

some shots of the available girls:

This one is the most curious girl, the one to take on her brothers in wrestling fights, and the one who knows the call for snack:

This one is pretty calm, and is similar in markings to Neonstina's girl.

wriggle wriggle-out of focus again! this girl has the teeniest brown dot on her white belly- no photo has been able to capture it, but in person, you can see it

a few group shots:
they are starting to nap away from mom:

but that's not the preference:
