Can anyone help?

Posted By Permission

My name is Christy and I'm the placement coordinator for Richmond Animal
Care and Control.  A couple weeks ago our senior Animal Control Officer
and I rescued 17 rats from an abandoned pet store.  It took us an hour
and a half to round everyone up.  Apparently mom and dad had escaped
prior to the store's closing and had 15 pups.  Mom and Dad are a dark
gray color with white on their feet and bellies.  The pups are albino,
cream, gray, and gray and white.  Including the adults there are 5
females and 12 males.  Mom and the babies are very social.  Dad is shy
but non-aggressive and getting friendlier.

I've tried contacting Richmond Rat Rescue but have not been emailed
back.  We've put them on petfinder but so far haven't had any interest.
I'd hate to take them to a pet store where they'll most likely end up
snake food.

If you could give me any suggestions or let me know of other groups to
contact I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!  Christy Hemsworth

Ack!!  I'm in Richmond but I'm not able to adopt anymore any time soon!  I took in that nursing mom and am now up to 17 ratties at home!  I wish I was able to help.  I did call RAC&C and leave a message asking for additional information (i.e. ages) and will talk to them to see if I'm able to help in any way.  I'll talk to some of my co-workers to see if anyone is interested... you never know.  They do like my rats.

Hi Ladies,

Thanks so much for your replies. I spoke with Christy again this afternoon and they have found homes for the five females. That still leaves 12 the Daddy and 11 little boys. I have 15 rescues of my own right now, several of whom are elderly and require special care.

I'll keep you informed. Hopefully someone will want them!

Arlene, I volunteer with Carolina Pet Rescue (www.cpr-nc.org)and we could take a few (don't know how many yet). The problem is transport, though. We are in Durham, NC. We can probably drive a short distance but maybe a rattie train will be possible.

I had a message from Christy last night and she said that one of the boys has been adopted, too!

I can definitely help with transport to NC and/or PA.  I can call Christy today and let her know.

Wonderrodent, if they will release them to rescue, how many could you take and when?  And how far could you drive?  I'm free this Saturday and I could drive to maybe the South Hill, VA area.  It looks like that is a little over an hour from Durham (a little over 2 hours from me).  I could pick the little buggers up tomorrow, keep them overnight and then transport them on Saturday.

SugarLovesRats, what part of PA are you in?  I'll be coming up near Harrisburg to Bethlehem, PA on October 5th so I might be able to transport to you???

retired racers - I'm in Manassas, VA and could help with transport up around the MD/PA area if you need some help.  I'll be in northeastern MD [right on the PA line] the first weekend in October to go to Rodent Fest in Cecil County, MD.

Retiredracers, we can take 4 of the baby boys. Saturday sounds good. Meeting in South Hill would be great.
Could you e-mail me so we can discuss the details? Thanks!

I just talked to Christy and we have arranged for me to pick up babies tomorrow afternoon.  I'll be getting 4 for Wonderrodent... does anyone else want any?  We can try to work out transport since we've had several volunteers.  After I get the 4 baby boys for Wonderrodent, there will only be 5 baby males and the daddy left so I'd love to be able to take even more of them.

SugarLovesRats, are you able to adopt/foster?  If so, I will foster yours until October 5th and then bring them with me.  I found your zip code in another thread and you're only about 45 minutes from where I'll be so I could bring them to you.

Anyone else?  There are several colors available and you'd really be helping them out.

OH MY GOSH!!  I saw this ad on petfinder.com this morning.  I called & left a message with the adoption center trying to find out if there were any baby boys left!  Christy should be calling me when she gets back from lunch.  That's so funny!  Have they all found homes??  Are there any left??  I could go down there right now and adopt whatever baby boys are left but the girl I spoke with didn't know if any baby boys were still available.  We've always got room for more!

Wonderrodent was going to take the dad and 3 of the babies and SugarLovesRats was planning on taking the boys that are left... for adoption and to foster.  I'm sure that they would be okay with you adopting some of them instead.

I'm headed down there tomorrow in the early afternoon... could you go down at the same time?

Today is the only day I have.  I work tomorrow.  I don't want to adopt babies that someone else has dibs on.. but there's no need in someone fostering them if we can adopt them.  Are there specific ones that have not been claimed?  We're about 15 minutes or so from the shelter.

Well, hmmm, I wonder if I could go down today.  If so, I could meet you down there, you could pick who you want and I could take the rest for Wonderrodent & SugarLovesRats.  What time do you think you would head down?

I wanted to thank everyone again for all their help. I hope it all works out.

If any of you want 2 little girls instead of boys or in addition to boys, there are 2 adorable 4 month old girls surrendered for adoptionat the Stafford Petco--an agouti and a black berk. They were very friendly, clinging to my fingers wanting to be held. It never ends does it! If someone wants them, I will be glad to help with transport!

Well, I just got back to work from picking up the dad and 6 or 7 babies (I forget how many).  They are soooo cute.

I don't have time to type out more details but I will tomorrow and maybe some pics, too.  I think I have 4 for Wonderrodent and the remainder for SugarLovesRats.  We'll get everything worked out soon.

Time to go home now.

The baby boys are very cute and dad's pretty sweet, too.  They are a little timid but will run up to the door of the cage and greet me.  I wasn't able to get any pics last night but they are darn cute.  The dad is black with a lot of white ticking and the mom is a beautiful mixture of colors.  She and the girls have a home in Georgetown in DC.

SugarLovesRats, there will be 3 boys left after Wonderrodent gets hers tomorrow.  I can't keep track of them (they're fast little buggers) but I believe it will be 2 dark gray berkshires and one PEW.  I'll call you sometime this weekend and we'll work out arrangements for October 5th.

Hey Racer did you get my pm's? I was worried they wern't sending they are not showing in my outbox and I didn't hear from ya this weekend so I was worried. I sent you another with my number please let me know if you got it. If not you could pm me your number but I don't know if I will get it but you cold try. I'll figure somethin out. Anyway I was afraid you didn't get my message and would think I wasn't interested anymore but I AM! I can't wait to get them. I am actually ratless at the moment which is very rare for me. About a month ago I had to have my last little girlie put down. I still miss her so much and I hate not having rats I think it makes me miss her even more. Ya know the cool thing is her name was October! Maybe this is fate LOL!! I hope to hear from you soon. I am so glad all this is working out. Thanks so much again, and I am sure the ratties thank you too, and everyone who helped them all get homes!
How's it goin with your boys Anesthesia? I'm glad you got yours too! Good Luck with them!

They're doing great!  They're extremely social and run to the cage every time they see/smell/hear me.  They're following the big boys around, eating/drinking well.. and are not shy about running around and investigating everything. Smiley

We should have the new FNs completed sometime today or tomorrow and they'll be moving in with all the other boys then. Smiley  I've already found that they love to run on a wheel so I'm looking forward to seeing them on the Wobust Wodent Wheels! Smiley

I did get your pms but wasn't able to call you until last night.  I think (I hope) I left a message on your husband's cell... but I didn't know your name so I probably sounded kinda stupid explaining who I was and why I was calling.  Can you imagine if I called the wrong number and left the message for someone else?

I left my phone numbers on the voice mail but in case you didn't get it, I'll PM them to you, too.

They are really cute and, like Anesthesia said, very curious.
