I sort of felt that today would be the day that TEK Downeaster Alexa would have her pups. I kept mentioning to friends via IM that I just had a feeling! This morning she had moved everything to the rear right corner of her cage (she has to be precise about these things) and was busily scooping her bedding around. When I came home about an hour ago I heard the unmistakable peeping of eepers coming from her cage! 5 big (It's Chubby Baby Month here!) bubs! Sadly there was one pup who appeared to be stillborn. Alexa was obsessively grooming her crew so I've left her alone right now to settle in with them. I'll give updates as soon as I know more about the new newborns! (as opposed to the 2 day old newborns who are now the "old" newborns ) Here are some photos of Alexa taken yesterday in all her preggo glory:

Wow Momma is beautiful and I know how much you love smaller litters, so she is considerate as well. Was there 6 bubs and there are now 5? Or was there 5 and there are now 4?

Wow! What a big girl for just 5 babies! No wonder they're so big.
She has gorgeous eyes, btw. I'm a sucker for good eyes on a rat.

She's so pretty - is she a BEW?
And WHY do we not have baby pics?

There were 6 pups and one was stillborn. 5 are thriving and nursing at this very moment! Both parents are Roans (The Roan gene causes gradual fading in color over time). While she may look like a BEW, she was Cinnamon when she was younger Here is a photo of her when she was younger: and just for fun a photo of Mr Roboto (the sire) a week before

Are roan genes in rats the same as that in hamsters and guinea pigs?
I got very concerned when I read they were both Roan..
In the other species breeding roan x roan can cause blind/deaf all white babies that die very on because of the mutation.
*Runs off to try and read up on this in rats.*

Nope, thankfully the Roan rat gene doesn't act in the same way as it does with hamsters or GPs. It's completely different. None of those issues occur when breeding Roan rat x Roan rat. (not to mention that all white babies are not produced from these pairings).

Ah, ok. Thanks for the information. Roan has always been my favorite pattern on any and all animals so I couldn't help but asking.
I'd love to see pictures of the babies!

Well my rat girls can't let me go without a surprise it seems! I went in first thing to check on Alexa and the eeps (and Bat, who of course, was sitting on them!) and decided to take the crew out to check for milk bands. I gave mom a treat (some of my Special K with strawberries and soymilk) and took out 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.....wait a second....6???! Yes...Alexa was not done last night when I told you all she was obsessively grooming! The newest little one looks as good as the others - a quick glance gives me 3 girls and 3 boys! I'll upload the photos this afternoon!

lol You taunt me Julie! I can get to Mass no problem, depending on where. I'm about 2 hours from Boston, without nasty traffic. I doubt it would be ANY time soon if we got babies anyway, but I've always been ga-ga over roans since I learned about them. If I could have a dark based roan from TEK!? Heaven!

Grace, I was actually in Maine for a week this summer. Somewhere called Tunk Lake. My girlfriends family has been going there every year since she has been born! Unfortunately, the woman they rent from is no longer renting the cabin (very VERY rustic) after this year. They're on a search for another one that has some of the same "features" the Tunk house did! And on that note...here is a photo of the bubs!

Awww! Cute pups!
How likely are you to have dark coated roans in litters? Or is that something still far off? Course, this is all assuming we could get transport worked out anyway when the time came. lol
*debating whether or not to put in an application for "some day"*
