My one girl is sick, which made me paranoid to check all of my other girls, and I found a lump on one of my older girls. What do you do about lumps? Do they require a vet visit right away (I am currently low on vet funds, as Spice is so sick D:). I;m hoping to sell a cage an old ferret cage on monday, so hopefully I will have money for the vet then,. She is acting normal and does not seem to be in any pain. It is about nickel size and right above her left shoulder. It seems soft.

I added pictures about four post down  Cry

a check up might be your best bet, but you might want to try to talk to a vet if you cant visit one. just try to strike  up a q&a session.

You might check super close and see if you can find any pin pricks, scabs or scratches around the area and try to either do the "dunk and hold" or use a warm compress just to see if it's an abcess, that's what my vet told me to do when I found the lump... did that three times a day for two and a half weeks, so I know hers isn't an abcess. You might try and see if it helps?

Maybe not an abcess then... I know it's important that if a lump is going to be removed the smaller it is the easier it'll be for the rat and the vet, the shorter the heal time, and the better chance of a full recovery. Good luck!

The lump is about the size of a nickel. I have a vet appointment in a couple of hours, I'm hoping it isn't anything serious.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. Hopefully, if it just popped up, it's an abcess.

I have only had the girls about a month now, after adopting them from the human society. I did not notice anything on her then. It does seem to have just popped up. I'll know after I talk to the vet  Undecided She is still a happy, active ratty  Blue Dumbo Smile

I've had mammary tumors just pop up like that out of nowhere... however one of my males recently had something that  Huh me because it was in the same spot, the perfect spot for a mammary tumor. That turned out to be just an abscess that I was able to get rid of. So it could be either, but you're right, the sooner you get to a vet the better before it gets out of control.

Its one of the classic places for a mammary tumour.  How old is this sweetie supposed to be approximately?

They told me a year and a half when I adopted her.

It is a tumor.

I feel sick to my stomach right now, I could have left her for surgery today, but I can't afford it right now. $178. I will start saving, and hopefully get it done in the next few weeks. I pleaded with my vet to work with me...they told me to come back later. I hate his receptionist. I'm crying my eyes out right now  Cry

Don't worry, it is better to have tumors removed right away, but she wont be hurt by waiting. When Fizzgig got her first tumor, my vet at the time BangHead told me it didn't need to be removed. I finally had enough of this thing because she couldn't even walk anymore. She got through surgery just fine with our new vet Grin even though that thing was over half her weight. She just went through another tumor removal at 33 months and is doing wonderfully. Just get rid of it as soon as you can! Good luck! Heart

You can always have the vet bill you and then pay in installments, I had to do that with one of my cats. I can't see why the vet wouldn't let you do that, it isn't typically compulsory that you pay up front.

edit: I see in your other post he said no... I think that's ridiculous. I've NEVER had a vet that wouldn't send a bill! I can't believe he's still in business. How can every one of his customers afford an emergency $1,000+ vet bill without any savings or warning? It's impossible.

Find another exotic vet ASAP.  You should never go to a doc that doesn't make you feel right.  You are paying for a service so make sure you feel damn good about that service.  If you need help finding another vet and you did a google search, contact your local humane society for a reference.

Try not to fret too much.  It's okay if you have to wait a bit before getting it removed.  Having it removed isn't too dangerous either, I had one removed from my girl and she was back to her ridiculous self in about a week, week and a half.  The chances of it being cancerous is very small as well.

I'd also suggest you check out this site for info on rat surgery: http://www.ratfanclub.org/surgery.html

Not having it removed right away won't hurt her. Some mammary tumours grow slowly as well too. Smiley
Save up for that surgery and she'll be just fine.

I have had that happen twice here. Once with my dog (had to charge it) and another time, I was backing out of the driveway and a tiny baby kitten got under my tire. I don't know where it came from, but it was in BAD shape and in excruciating pain. I rushed it to the vet and they wouldn't euthanize it until I had the money ( I didn't have money on me so my mom met me at the vet and paid for it). Isn't that pathetic?! These were two different veterinary offices too!

It sucks not being able to pay in payments, so I've had to get a care credit card. Every single vet I've been to in the area requires payment when services are rendered. (Not to thread jack)- My rottie (she's deaf) was freaking at our fence because a large dog was trying to jump the fence. My parents male minpin (she grew up with him and our chihauha scottie mix)was trying to protect her, but missed jumping at the fence and jumped on her back. I guess she thought she was being attacked from behind, and turned and grabbed him by the neck. A hole in his esophogus and windpipe, almost died in the car, and the vet insisted after he was stabilized but before surgery, I better find a way to pay or they'd have to stop treatment. Care credit is the ONLY thing that has allowed me to keep my pets.

I guess I can understand that why they want payment up front, but if you're a consistent patient, I'm not sure why they can't work around it. It just sucks. Hopefully your girl will be all set with you continuing to do the great job you're doing until you can afford it. Good luck to you and  Heart and  Cookie to your girl!
