Question about carpet... still got another
«

so my dad works with a home builder and i asked him if i could get some carpet to make liners for my "pee river" shelves. he told me that they would chew the adhesive on the bottom and it could be very bad for them. i think i remember seeing many people using carpet in their cages. so is this true?

To me, carpet seems like a pain in the butt to clean. I guess you could throw it into the washer, but it wouldn't last long.
Also, brand new home-type carpet has alot of solvents and other weird things in it. If you've ever been in a home with new carpet, it has a really weird smell to it. There's alotta debate as to if it's safe for humans or not. So in that case, no, I wouldn't house rats on it.

i know what you mean. im in a fairly new house right now. new carpet also has lots of loose fibers. i just thought of carpet because i could easily get some and i would think it would be a tad better than fleece. any other suggestions for liners/bedding substitutes?

How about towels? They are much more absorbent than fleece, but a lot less hard to clean and full of chemicals than carpet.
The only worry about towels is that a rat could snag a toe on a loose thread, but plenty of people use them without any trouble.

More people tend to use the peel and stick vinyl tile to line their cages and make it easier to clean. I bought cotton braided rugs from Ikea that I use to line the pans of my FN cage, and those are really great and easy to clean.

I'm not sure about it being dangerous, but I had a friend who used it for awhile because she thought it looked better than fleece/towels, and her cage was always smelly. It would stink up again almost instantly after she cleaned it. FYI...

Carpet contains toxic glues and off-gasses a LOT, so it's not something I want in my home much less my rat's cage, where they can chew it and it will constantly be offending their delicate respiratory systems.

Any home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot; they're usually 10-20 cent apiece, or you can buy them in boxes. I know of people who have found them by the box at dollar stores as well.
