Has anyone here had any experience using prednisolone in place of prednisone in rats?  If so, is the dosage the same?

This should help out.  http://ratguide.com/meds/endocrine_hormones/prednisone_prednisolone.php  Prednisone is converted to prednisolone in the liver, so all it is is the synthetic version of what the liver converts the prednisone into.

from ratguide

Though prednisone and prednisolone are used in the same manner and equally as effective, they should not be confused with each other. Prednisone is activated by the liver into prednisolone. For this reason, and because it is more easily absorbed, prednisolone is the drug of choice when hepatic disease or insufficiency is present.

I actually use dexamethasone myself, because its faster acting and lasts for a longer duration, but most people use pred.

Also, remember that you have to taper off of giving Pred to any pets.  It can't be stopped cold turkey.  You'll usually see increased activity, increased thirst/eating and increased urination when Pred is given too.

I would check with your vet about dosages to be sure.  Rat guide only lists one dosage range, but I thought I recalled that they were different for predisone vs prednisolone.

I agree with Lise.  The dosage is a range and would be given depending on the amount of immune response suppression that you need.  In my exotics formulary, the only drug listed is prednisone and the dosage range is 0.5 to 2.2 mg/kg to be given by mouth, subcutaneous or intramuscular.  It is indicated to be safe for all species of rodents as an anti-inflammatory.
