Housing for a Hamster?
« on: March 22, 2015, 07:32:15 PM »
I want to get a hamster, but I share a room in an apartment with someone else, so smell is an issue. My roommate said she doesn't mind, but I don't want to inconvenience her. Obviously I will be changing the bedding weekly and whatnot, but I was wondering if you guys find tanks or cages better in terms of smell. I mean, I would think a cage would be better since it would be able to air out, but then again, would a tank hold the scent in and keep it from going into the room?

What kind of hamster?  Robos and other dwarfs will be able to fit through the bars of a cage so definitely no cage for them!  Tanks need to be cleaned and monitored carefully because ammonia can build up and hamsters can get respiratory issues.  I have found that tanks do tend to hold the smell in a bit more.  Frequent cleaning will just have to be important!

Thank you! I'm not entirely sure if I will be getting dwarf hamsters or a Syrian, but I just wanted to check! I haven't had rodents in a long time, so I couldn't remember which housing method seemed to be best.  :)

I recommend a homemade bin cage. The setup bellow is for a single robo dwarf. IMO, robos are the least smelliest of hamsters. If smell is really important to you, consider a robo.

It's recommended to have at least 360 square inches of space for them. :)
