Bizarre-looking syrian hamster (photos)
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:22:22 PM »
(Cross posted on Hamster Hideout forum, sorry if it's repetitive!)
I made a post a few weeks ago about a hamster that I was concerned might have hydrocephalus. I'm not sure.. He is not really thriving. He arrived at the store on 2/24 and weighed no less than 50 grams (More likely he was around 55-60 grams). I have begun keeping track of his weight. He was 66g on 3/10, 67g on 3/12, and 73 g on 3/14. This does not seem like he is growing properly to me. He is not very active and doesn't run on his wheel. He is eating fine and his weight seems good.

Anyway, I took a few shots of him. As you can see, his muzzle is very short, his eyes are very bulging and spaced far apart. Gosh.. He's just so weird! Anyone ever seen this? Is he just weird looking? The lack of activity and slow growth makes me think it's something more. And the pictures honestly don't do him justice.. I think he's even weirder looking in person.   :-\

Sorry I have nothing to contribute, but I'm interested in what others will have to say.

He's adorable though. Just add some floppy ears and he'd almost look like a little bunny.  :yelcutelaugh:

I don't want to be rude to anyone, but he looks a lot like someone with Downs.

No clue on what could be wrong with him,
But I think he looks like a pug ;)
I'd be scared his eyes will fall out :(

Someone on another forum I visit had a hamster that looked a little like your little guy, and I think she said he had dwarfism.

I totally agree with this. That's one of the first things I said when I saw him!

And Snippet, that's a good thought on the dwarfism. It makes a lot of sense.

I wouldn't discount the hydrocephalus.  I looked at your pictures before reading your post, and that's the first thing that popped into my mind.  Please do keep us updated on the little guy!

How is he doing now? Has he been to a vet or anything?
He certainly is weird looking, but in an absolutely adorable way. Hope he's well. Huh! A hamster that doesn't run on a wheel...

He wound up being sold. I haven't heard any more updates on him, good or bad. The person who bought him thought he was "just too odd to leave behind" and understood that he might have some sort of issues that could shorten his life and that she might need to get him medical attention if he seemed to be suffering. Haven't seen any more like him (yet), just some hamsters with malocclusions..  :-\

I know this is a very old post but today I bought a syrian with exactly  the same features for exactly the same reasons.  She is strangely beautiful. I work in the pet shop she came from and was a little worried about any health issues she may have. I Google and found a photo which brought me here. If anyone does see this post and has any experience of these little strangers it would be good to hear of any outcomes 😊
