9 am  and the vet said he would call me first thing in the morning when he went in to give my babies their meds.

NO CALL YET

**pacing........pacing....**

but  in this case no news is good news I think.

I am taking the lab boys (not Twizzler...just the three others, Clayton, Skittles and Mr. Magoo) in to the vet tomorrow to get them on the meds the others are on (injections) they are not lethargic and are eating etc but Clayton looks like he is wearing red mascara and it smeared in his one eye and is sneezing,  Mr. Magoo is congested and honking  and snorting, and SKittles has  tons of porphyrin on his nose and sneezes alot.  They are on Baytril/amoxil but still continue to be like this so maybe they need the other stuff.  THey may not even have what the others have.

Vet just called .......

Said THEY ARE IMPROVING!

He said that all of them including my berks are showing alot of improvement today and most of them are breathing NORMAL today too!

He said I can take some home tomorrow and he may keep the berks....not sure yet because they may get better during the course of today!
I am bringing in the three lab boys tomorrow for injections but wont leave them there. They will stress too much plus they are eating/drinking ok still so they are in no need of oxygen or fluids and I can give them care here at home.

I fell to my knees and sobbed when we hung up.
When this is over I know it will hit me.  The loss of my Kirby and Spott.....the fact that my poor babies were near death........all of it.
I thank everyone for their prayers and support. I hope to God this is over now......really OVER now and nobody all of a sudden goes downhill again.
I was almost scared to post for fear it would omen everything but I am not that superstitious. (spelling)

I just wanted to add my good wishes to the others you have received.  I'm sorry you lost 2 of your precious rat children, but are grateful that the rest seem to be on the mend.  Hopefully, soon all this will seem like a bad dream and things will be normal again.

Try to take care of yourself too though!

Hugs to all of you!

One thing is when I am worried/depressed etc...I dont eat much.  I forced myself to eat half a bagel last night and I know my rats LOVE Chinese fried rice so I picked up some for take out and shared it with them last night too.  They ate more than I did!  LOL
I lost probably 6 pounds since Monday which I know isnt good but thats how I am I guess.
I will gain it back though dont worry.  Hubby went to Baskin Robbins and bought me a container of Jamocha almond fudge and 20 cones PLUS a dozen roses (from the grocery store!)  hes so thoughtful.  He knows I have been a mess emotionally but trying to keep it together for the other rats that need me plus of course my "human" family. heh.
Oh and my kids have been keep up with dishes and my daughter went to the grcoery store for me (guess they had no choice.....we were out of milk and soda) all I made sure we had was pedialyte and soy milk and baby food and other stuff for sick rats.  LOL
MY BAD!
So today I will get everything ready for my rats for tomorrow.  I am taking cages apart and bleaching them and putting new tile down and I guess I will throw out their wicker balls and buy new ones?  That will be like $20 for those........wonder if they should be thrown out? Its all airborne anyhow so...is that wasting money ?  I dont know what to do about that but they love their wicker balls.  All my rats love them.

I am like so walking on air right now.....the black cloud is lifting finally.  No matter how sunny out with blue skies and fluffy white clouds.......it seemed dreary and dark all week.

I am scared though because like Spott for example.  He was going to come home Thursday afternoon but went downhill again and died that night.......but I am hoping because of the new meds they are on it is killing all the bad stuff.

In a way that makes me mad....why did we have to wait all week to get them on the gentocin injections?   Kirby and Spott could still be alive if they were on it from day one.  I was told that its a super strong antibiotic that should be used as a last resort (has caused kidney problems in dogs and cats with prolonged use) so  maybe thats why they didnt reach for it first thing.
I wish they did though for Kirby and Spotts sake.  Those boys had alot of life left to go yet.
Spotts fav place was to sneak down my shirt and sit in my cleavage!   LOL!  I have scratches to prove it all over my chest!

Ah well.......today is just so much better than yesterday.  still keep those positive vibes flowing......they are helping!

I wonder if you couldn't just put those in the oven for an
hour at 300 degrees? it works for killing mites. Bacteria
too I would expect (someone tell me if I am wrong)

This post is a relief to read. You were inside-out with worry
& it's been wrenching to read along with the ups & downs.
We can't guarantee these things never happen; we can only
do our best to make sure, with quarantines & stuff, that they
happen as little as possible. Nobody's vigilance can be perfect -
especially against microscopic foes! Please just know that if
you weren't such a good & careful caretaker of these fragile little
guys,  the outcome would have been worse yet. As it is you made
sure they got absolutely the best care possible. Here's to the upward
trend continuing!

Instead of buying more wicker balls, buy the hamster run about balls and toss the lid. My rats LOVE those things and try to fit 4 in each one (keep in mind that is like 5-6 lbs of rattie there). And I never have to worry about them getting too soiled or throwing them away. Just clean them each time the cages are cleaned. They're bleachable too so in your case Sandy, you wouldn't need to throw any out. :) Just a thought though. You can get them cheap at Petsmart for like $5. Sometimes they sell them cheaper.

I'm glad the rats are improving. I was worrying about them too. :-* to the furkids

I'm so glad they're improving!!!  :)

To be on the safe side- I would get rid of the wicker balls.
It's not worth risking it.

Sandy, I have been reading every few hours, but not posting. I didn't want to jinx anything by using any congratulatory words.

It sounds like the worst is over now, with the new meds and all of the love and prayers being sent your way.

Your family should be commended for rallying around you at this trying time. They understand how important this little lives are to you. I am sure the babies are important to them, as well.

Hugs, love and prayers go out to you from this end of the country. I wish we lived closer so i could help out in some small way.

Twizzler....my lone lab rat  and who has had no symptoms up till now of this whatever it is that is going around.......well now he has a big lump in his throat and he looks like he swallowed a  grape or something and its stuck in his throat.  He looks like an iguana.
Yeah I know......thats a swollen lymph node and yeah...I know what that is a sign of.
I called the vet who quickly told me that I am in panic mode and that this can and does cause swollen lymph nodes......SDA is NOT the only one that does that.
I dont know why I am freaking anyhow.......strep infection is actually more lethal than SDA anyhow but still I thought we were getting passed this......I thought Twizzler had escaped getting any of this.  He seems OK but...

Crap!

He is on baytril and amoxil and soon to be on prednisone for this swelling.

double crap

Ok so now I am back to being a nervous wreck again.

This is tearing me apart

Nobody came home yet.  Vet says lets give the ones that are improved another day.

The four lab boys are staying even though I promised them they wouldnt.  Twizzler bit the living daylights out of the tech and she didnt wear the "cat gloves"  they use for cats.......so oh well...she has been warned.   I didnt want to tell them they bite because usually they are really submissive when they are at the vets and I didnt want them to be scared of them since they sense that and take advantage of it......but I said they may "nip"  so try not to scruff any of them.

Well scruff she did and Twizzler let her have it.  CHOMP

He looks TERRIBLE!  His neck is swollen and he is congested a bit.

So far the tests are saying bacterial and not viral......yet to me Twizzler and his swollen lymph nodes are classic SDA signs but why just him ?
Oh well...

Grayson has lost alot of weight and has all this loose skin.  He is a huge rat (big boned) so all that extra skin is saggin.....poor man.......but otherwise he sounds much better.
The dainty dollie girls have not lost any weight.......just Grayson and Fermie.
It wont hurt Twizz and Clayton to lose some either......they are both porkers.

Keep the prayers coming......we are still not out of the woods yet.

I am going to call another exotics specialist tomorrow for some more advice.
This sucks feeling like yeah...the doctor is doing good and going out of his way to try to keep these rats from getting worse etc..but he still doesnt get it ya know?  The SDA part and how important the ELISA is and yet he says he tested for viruses yet he isnt specific.
dang it anyhow!

VEt just called

Looks like Dott has a little abcess on his belly that I pointed out today so he is going to treat that......he wont give Twizz the steroids for the swollen Salivary glands till the antibiotics have gotten in his system saying the swollen glands wont hurt him anyhow.

Sigh....

Thats it so far.  No further news to share.

The room is soooooooooo  empty.  I have four empty cages now and one missing totally (Kirbys)  I took it out.

I am going to bleach it out again and when I get the girls back they will live in there for a few days till we think the worst is over and they can go back in their old cage with Oreo and Pitter.  I will move three cages into my daughters room so at least they wont be in the same room with the other rats.  Its not a quarantine.......just a safety thing.  Meantime hands will be washed and clothes changed and extra precautions taken so we dont reinfect the others.

This was the vets idea.  He said its airborne but just be on the safe side.
I thought........what the heck ever....ya know?
what can it hurt?  It may be just another hassle but better to be safe than sorry.

I  still cant sleep.

Its too quiet without my 24 rats.

Grayson lost tons of weight. I hate it. He was nearly 3 pounds before getting sick.
I cant tell him from Bingo now (who is the smallest out of the triplets) Fermie has a black dot on his white belly so I can find him.  I will have to observe them to know who Bingo and who Grayson is now.  Bingo is very friendly and Grayson is more reserved but right now they are all mad at me and scared of the techs so they hide in the box I brought up for them.

I have to get these babies home.  If I knew how to give injections I would bring them home but I hate to hurt them and I know they will squeak and I just cant take that.

OMG... what a hearbreaking tale... you are doing everything right, and I really don't think you should be blaming yourself even a tenth of what you seem to be doing. It's a side-effect of being an exceptionally devoted and diligent Mum that you will want to establish who or what is to blame but it's *not* through *any* kind of neglect on your part, OK?

My thoughts are with you right now... each and every one of those tiny things knows how much love you pour over them every second of every day, and the ones that have passed will be shining down on you right now and holding out for their 'family' to keep strong and get better soon.

i can't add anything, words are just so useless...  to each and every one of your family
