Sick! Sad Update 8/8 Wyatt is gone
« on: July 20, 2006, 10:26:07 AM »
I feel like I am in the middle of a bad dream. Last Thursday, I took my rat boy, Wyatt, in to see the vet because he was very lethargic, and having trouble breathing. Since he was already on a baytril/doxy combination which obviously wasn't working for him, the vet put him on chloraphemicol. Fortunately, he is improving. My husband and I went away for the weekend. Melissa (angelratgirl) and her 4 rats were here to help my daughter care for all the critters. When we returned, my rat girl, Brenna was sick. I took her in on Monday and since she was not on any meds, she was put on Baytril. Since then, virtually all of my rats have come down with the same sickness, unfortunately, including 3 of Melissa's 4 rats. Her rats are far sicker than mine, requiring oxygen last night. I really feel bad about that!  I called one of my vets at home last night for advice and after consulting with her and some of my wonderful friends on this board, as of last night, everyone was put on baytril/doxy just in case. The fortunate news is, everyone is still alive although in various stages of this "epidemic." I hope this makes sense. My head is still spinning. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Oh Arlene, I wish I could be of some help, but I haven't a clue. I'm so sorry that your ratties are all sick and I'll be sending healing thoughts to them all, and to Melissa's girls. I hope that you will find answers and all your ratties are well soon. I know it's frustrating not knowing what you're dealing with. Give them all kisses for me.

I'm so sorry Arlene. :(
Can you give us a better description on how sick they are?  Is the breathing rapid and shallow, is it congested or wheezing, any gasping with mouth open? Lethargy, cold extremities?  Every little bit of info counts because someone could read this and say "I've seen that!" and may be able to give you advice.
Is there a timeline?..Wyatt was sick earlier than last week but the chlorpalm was added on Thursday?  2nd rat became ill when?  Sorry to make this all clinical when I would much rather give you a hug.   :-\

This same thing happened to me a month or so ago. I left on vacation, with my rats in the care of an unexperienced care-giver. When I returned, my newest rat, Juliet, was gasping for air. The caretaker hadn't even thought to  call me, or noticed.... She had very advanced pneumonia. I rushed her to the vet, they gave her an injection, but unfortunately it was too late. I lost her. It was really emotional for me.

Before I had a chance to recover from that, the three other rats that had shared a cage with her became ill; they all had cought either upper or lower (depending on the stage) respiratory infections. Determined not to lose another rat, I just devoted myself to the girls, even taking them to work with me at first ;D. They showed Great impriovement within a week.

I think the key is to just do everything you can possibly think of to help them get better, keep them warm (but not with a heating pad! My Tompkins has a burn wound that attests to that :-[) and let them rest!
Lettting them get the rest they needed was the hardest part for me, as I felt I needed to constntly comfort them... but the best thing is to keep handling to a minimum, medicate until ALL the meds are gone and give 'em all the love you can.

Calling the vet for advice is also super helpful during an epidemic (of sorts) like this.

Good luck getting your babies back to the healthy wonderful rats I am sure they are! :thumbsup2:

all of the rats were "fine" when they left for the weekend with the exception of the four i had to give meds to. when arlene got back, brenna started getting sick so we put her on meds right away. then it all seemed to snowball after that. more of her boys' cage and half of her girls' cage got sick on the same day that my girls got sick. it seemed to start at one side of the room, skip a cage, and then hit my babies.

we cannot figure out where it came from and we have kinda stopped trying. both of us blame ourselves and are apologizing to the other.

my girls have made it thru the night tho, with oxygen and a couple of doses of baytril. this afternoon, i put riley back in the cage because she missed her mates, and she even took some babyfood. she was the one that had me most scared. she was clicking and open mouth breathing at various points. cherry is doing much better, she was the second worst. celia is also better, tho still breathing hard like the others. morgan is the only one still bouncing off the walls like nothing is wrong. i still gave her some baytril just in case.

lets see. time line

thursday i arrived at arlene's
friday, arlene left, no change in who was and wasn't sick
saturday, wyatt's new meds came and i started him on his new meds.
sunday, wyatt seemed better, but brenna started sneezing, and arlene got back.
monday, brenna started baytril and a few others started sneezing.
tuesday, i noticed that my girls were sneezing just a bit, but i thought it was because of the excitement in the room. anytime i take cherry for a ride, she gets all sneezy. several more of arlene's rats were acting less active than normal, not rushing to the food bowls and such.
wednesday, the bomb dropped. about dinner time my girls were almost gasping and a bunch of arlene's rats were sneezing and poofy.
today (thursday) my girls seem to be on the slow road to recovery. a night of O2 to help them breath while the meds got into their system seems to have helped.

i wonder if i can get my boss to give me saturday off so i can stay here a little longer. car rides stress my girls, apparently.

a day off to stay with your girls would probably work wonders!

I'd definately give it a try.

That way you can be there if anyone relapses, or if anyone looks uncomfortable .

Good luck!

Is everyone responding to the meds now?  Or are any getting worse? Good idea getting them all on the baytril, you probably are being properly proactive there.   Poor babies.  :-\
Try to stay the extra time and give your girls a chance to recover unstressed.

Thanks for all the kind responses and good wishes! So far, everyone is still with us and is either the same or slightly better. Lets see, besides the lethargy, porphoryn in eyes and nose, sneezing, they do seems to be cold. They are all piling up on each other to comfort each other and to stay warm. At the sickest point, their little chests are heaving, but they are not open mouth breathing except for Melissa's girls. Fortunately, they have stopped doing that as well after 24 hrs on baytril/doxy. Needless to say, I have ordered more!

I've been in touch with both of my vets. One is all for treating everyone and being very agressive with the treatment. The other, my specialist, is more "conservative" wanting to only treat the sickest ones for fear that they will become immune to the medication. My thinking is, we can deal with that later but if I don't treat them all, there may not be any later for some of them.

I've also gotten some wonderful advice from members on this forum, menagerie, kimmyizme, and TheChicagoCrew about how to proceed and greatly appreciate their help! Thanks so much! It's good to know you are not alone in a time like this! Keep sending those healing thoughts!

I'm so sorry to hear you both have been hit so hard. it's probably pointless to try to figure out what you've got, or even where it came from at this point. All you really know is that it's probably very contagious and transmitted through the air, so it's important to stay away from other people's rats and out of pet stores.

If you've found a treatment that's working, stick with it. If not, keep trying something else until you do. I have been able to nebulize up to 3 rats at a time using a large kritter keeper and going for about 20 minutes. Then I let the rats sit in the keeper for another 5 minutes until all the vaporized medicine is breathed up. Nebulizing works wonders getting meds right to their lungs, so you might consider it if it's a possibility for you. I used the formula I found on RatGuide: http://ratguide.com/health/lower_respiratory/pneumonia.php

I'll keep everything crossed for both of you!

Oh, Arlene, I am so sorry.   :'(  Has your vet been able to get a mucus or fecal sample to test for what bacteria are present?  It sounds more like a virus, but you can't discount that it could be a combination of bacteria, like what went through my and Devin's colony a few years ago.  Had you started intros with the new little boys?

Hi Kendra,

I'm pretty sure it is a viral infection. I haven't actually taken anymore of them to the vet. I have just called them. I hadn't started introducting the little boys yet and btw, they and Rufio are the only ones that didn't show symptoms. Generally, everyone seems better except for Lucas who was the last one to come down with it and if he progresses as the rest of them are, he should be showing improvement by tomorrow. The only one I am seriously worried about is little Wyatt since he was already quite sick. Please continue to send healing thoughts! Thanks to everyone!

i couldn't stay the weekend cuz i remembered my boss was taking the weekend off and i am the only other person who can close the store.

my girls were pretty much getting better, tho very slowly, but on my way home celia started getting worse again. it may have been the car ride, i don't know, but before i even went home, i took them to my vet. he and i agreed on nebulizing them all together to reduce stress and to try to knock this thing out with zithromax.

it is going to be hard to sleep tonite without hearing my rat noises, without kissing celia goodnight and fussing over her cute little feet or getting run over by the other three when i open the cage.

Lucas took a turn for the worst yesterday afternoon. Despite my best efforts, I found him in the bottom of his cage this morning, his body cold and stiff. I can't say that it was entirely unexpected, but it still hurts. He was a fighter to the end. He was very adamant about the fact that he wanted to die in his cage with his brothers instead of being separated from them in an oxygen tank. I heard that loud and clear. Since he wasn't gasping at the time, I honored his wishes. I went to bed knowing that I would probably find him exactly the way I did. I'm sad beyond words and pray that I don't lose anyone else.

Thanks Liz. Surprisingly, Wyatt is doing okay. I am surprised that he wasn't the first one I lost considering he was already sick, but he is hanging in there. So far Lucas was the last one to get sick and the hardest hit.

I am so sorry to hear what you have all been going through. I have no advice other than the ratties have got the best humans looking after them.

I'm sorry that Lucas's body just could not fight this thing, but he died how he wanted and he'll be watching over you all.

my update:

cherry is getting stronger and better, and she was very poorly the first day it hit. morgan didn't really start sneezing until friday, but she is as strong as an ox and i have no doubt she will make it thru with flying colors. riley is as thin as ever, but she is also very active despite being sick. celia has me most worried since she is now two (the sisters turned one last week, and riley doesn't turn one until halloween) but she has made it quite clear she intends to fight to stay.

i got to visit them this morning before work, and when i asked celia if she wanted me to help her fight to stay, she bruxed at me. before i left, they weighed the girls to see how they were doing, and two had gained weight, while two lost only a couple of grams. and then, when the doctor wanted to pick up each one to listen to how they were breathing, cherry made moves to grab the doctor with her hands and teeth. either she went into protective mode or she wanted to give him a good cleaning.

as long as my girls want to fight to stay, i will fight for them too.

I've been so busy I hadn't even seen this post yet! Arlene, I am very sorry to hear that so many got sick and especially about poor Lucas. It sounds almost like what Mab went through, particularly the coldness. I wonder what it is o.0 I am very glad to hear the boys and Rufio didn't catch it. I wonder how hard it would have hit littler ones, but I don't want to find out and I know neither do you. Did Jason come down with it?

Definately keep us updated. It seems like one thing after another doesn't it? I'll be thinking good thoughts for you and yours, annoint and light a couple candles for you. I hope everyone continues to improve. Best wishes.
