I'm at a loss of words. On December 28th, I took my two boys, Winston and Bradley, to the vet to get neutered. I had gotten the call that they were both fine, and had made it through the surgery and that pickup was at 4 (this was at 3PM).  I got to the vet's office at 4:05 pm, but was pulled into the back room...My vet came in the room crying and said that Winston passed not 5 minutes ago...didn't make it through the anesthesia. I was refunded both neuters...and a private cremation/autopsy happened instead. The autopsy results showed no cause of death.

Bradley is doing ok, I don't think at the time he realized that he lost his brother yet, even though they did cuddle after Winston passed. Now he only hangs out in one hammock... I'm waiting for a few weeks before he gets intro-ed to the rest of my crew (Tofu, Spoons, and Trogdor). Nyssiri passed away suddenly a month previous.

Winston was my special character.  I got Winston and Bradley from my friend, Sunny, about 6 weeks ago.  Winston would always come when called, he was such a good boy...I had trained him to take Cool Whip with prune jam in a small syringe so he could take medication by himself.  He would immediately run up to me for cuddles in the morning, and he loved to hang out in the cowl of my sweater, and steal any cracker crumbs that landed his way.  He had an aversion to the water bottle, so he had a small water dish to himself...but he also loved to put his little paw to the water bottle marble and let all of the water drown the cage, with Bradley looking like a soup sop. XD

I'm sure going to miss him lots. :(

Yep. He's back to his normal shy self. I don't know what the tail thing was about, but it's back to being a normal pink. He also has his appetite back and will wait at the front of the cage for meal time.  :)

Rat Tails & Mug Shots / Ways to Help The Travelin' Rat Help Rescues
« Last post by ratluver372 on January 15, 2018, 11:15:08 AM »
Weekdays from today through the end of January, The Travelin' Rat will post fundraisers- some AT NO COST or NO ADDITIONAL COST to you- that the rescues we help participate in on social media. Check out #WaysToHelpTTRHelpRescues to see them all, or go to our website at

Surprisingly, you can earn money for your favorite rescue just from searching the internet or walking your dog (walking, running, cycling, or cross-country skiing!) at GoodSearch and ResQwalk, respectively. Most of the other fundraisers donate a portion of things you buy- some you already would be buying, anyway- to the charity of your choice: Amazon Smile, BISSELL Pet Foundation,, Goodshop,, Pet Bucket, Rescue Chocolate, Small Pet Select, Vegecyber Inc.. At Wag! Dog Walkers, you can help a rescue when you book a dog walker.

Be sure to check out the hashtag or our website to see which rescues participate in each of these fundraisers (along with any codes and specific rescue links for some of them). We're so appreciative of all of these companies that help the rescues!

What you're doing through these fundraisers may seem small, but EVERY little bit helps!

Thank you!
Pack Rat Swap Meet - Classifieds / Single CN for Sale Baltimore
« Last post by Ezzierat on January 13, 2018, 08:09:44 PM »
Hello everyone!

I have a single Critter Nation for sale. It is used, in good condition. See photos below. I used it for only about a year, from October 2014 - October 2015. It has been in storage for 2 years and as I just emptied my storage unit, I have to face the reality that I will not have any ratties anytime in the foreseeable future, so I would rather somebody else get use out of this great cage rather than it sitting in my basement.
I kept it clean while it was in use and also wiped down the spots I missed while disassembling, but it definitely smells like rats have lived in it and could use additional cleaning. It is otherwise in great condition except for a couple chewed spots on the trays.
I will include everything seen in the pictures: 2 ceramic food bowls, 2 glass water bottles, a plastic house thing, as well as (if you want them) the least-chewed liners and hammocks, all of which I made myself. Liners are only for the top shelf, as my rats went to town on the bottom shelf ones and they weren't worth saving. I also have a bag full of unused fleece, plus some used u-haul furniture pads which I used underneath the fleece liners because they are absorbent. I'm holding on to them for now but will toss them if the buyer isn't interested.

I am asking $50 OBO. I live in downtown Baltimore. The cage is disassembled and you would have to come pick it up but it would probably fit in the backseat or trunk of a car. I'd be happy to measure it if someone needs me to.

Please let me know ASAP if you are interested, as my boyfriend says I have 3 months to get rid of it before he does  ::)

If you'd like to post pictures, they first have to be posted somewhere on the Net.  I use Flickr, myself.  Then, once you have the URL, you insert it in your post by using the image tag, as follows:  [ img ] URL [ /img ]

The spaces are there to make the code visible and must not appear in an actual post.  Please do not include more than ten images in a single post.  If you have more than ten pics, that's fine, just don't put more than ten per post.

Unfortunately the lump continued to grow... she had a successful lumpectomy and eye removal last Friday and is recovering well with an open approach (as she managed to open the site). Other than gut stasis (and the mild panic from me when she opened up the wound) she is coping very well 😊
The vet has advised that she wasnít able to get as clear a margin as she would have like but Remy will certainly be more comfortable without the giant lump in her way.

We made the decision to go ahead as it was started to trouble her eye from where the lump was pushing up on the eyelid into her eye.
Iíd post pictures but I canít figure out how to on here! 😂

We are also lucky enough that we have someone in the family who can do some testing and provide us with a histology report on the lump. Iíll update as soon as weíve had it back.
Rat Tails & Mug Shots / The Girls Got Their First Bathes Today~
« Last post by MinervaThonosi on January 08, 2018, 05:44:16 PM »
So I was hanging out with the girls, giving them some love. I then noticed how brown Rutabaga's tail was. It was pretty gross. So I decided it was bath time. Rutabaga was up first. At first she just wanted out of the water, but after I have rubbed the oatmeal shampoo in she decided it was a better idea to wash her face and shake the water off. Didn't like being rinsed off. Her favorite part was definitely being dried off. She was very calm as I gave her a little massage with the towel. She didn't even care when I was getting rid of old tail scales. She just sat there and cleaned her face.

Then there was Zucchini. She was talking the whole time. She had no desire to be in the water. She didn't want to be wet. She hated the shampoo. Zucchini squeaked as I first got the shampoo on her. While I was rubbing it in, she would take breaks from talking to squeak. Once in the towel, she was still not happy. Her little talking sounded so mad. My ruff translation would be something like "How dare you do this to me. I am not happy with you! No, I will not take that yogie! I can't believe you got me so wet. Fine, I'll take the yogie, but that doesn't mean I forgive you!"  :rattysmiley:
