Title: *NEW* Vet Directory PLEASE HELP!
Post by: Goosemoose on August 11, 2005, 06:11:31 PM
We've had the thread in the reference desk for the past 4 years but it's getting too difficult to find a vet in it. So, we have added a new resource to the site! From the main goosemoose home page http://www.goosemoose.com , or under resources at the top of this page, click on the Vet Directory.

It is set up like a Yellow Pages with specific questions for Vets. I have added all the countries that I know we have forum members from. If your country isn't listed please put it in the "Other" cateogry and I will create the country and move your listing there.

We'd like it if EVERYONE would please take 3 minutes and go post your vets information. This information is critical to our site as most newbies show up here when they need help and the vet references is the most important part of that aspect.

I'm most interested in your feedback, good or bad.

Let me know by posting in this thread when you have posted a vet so I can approve it asap.

Thanks everyone!

I just added three I've had experience with.
The ones in CA I don't have their full addresses, just the city.

Hi Tex,
You have to log out and back in for it to work. For some reason whenever I add a new feature to the site this occurs on some systems. Go ahead and try it and let me know if it works. Thanks!

Up to 32 now :) I switched things around so that it sorts by Clinic name rather than vet name. It just wasn't working well the other way around as some people didn't know the vets name ;)

Good job guys. Up to 47 listings.

Something I forgot to mention before. When you pick the category it's going to be in, which is usually a state. You can actually choose multiple states. If your vet is near another state (say within an hour drive), please hold down your ctrl key and select both states.

it's not recognizing my login either. well here is my info to share:

Colony Animal Hospital
13187 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23602
(757) 877-6464
http://www.colonyvet.com/

dr. piske is the greatest!  He cares for a lot of animals and will do everything he can to help out. ^_^v  I've given him challenges from a hamster with an extrememly rare blood disorder that the odds are around 1 in 1 million hamsters may have or show they have to a mouse that I thought was a baby rattie that suffered from a very bad fall to a rattie that had strep throat and my other rattie with allergies to everything. He is very gentle with the animals and they always take to him right away. I have yet to see an animal fight with him, especially after he talks to them a bit. :)

Highly, highly recommended!

I will add my regular rat vet, who does a great job on the basics, but I've never (thank goodness) had to have a ratty go in for surgery- I want to neuter two of my pet boys and maybe spay one girl as I continue on my quest to start a small, responsible rattery (I would like Algernon to live with the girls, and Beauregard free ranges almost all the time when I'm home and I'm concerned about horizontal tangoing through bars), so I'm in search of a vet in Colorado who comes highly recommended for neuters/spays. Beauregard is my heart rat, and I'm super nervous! If anyone has a rat vet in CO who has done neuters for them with lots of success, please please add them and maybe PM me to let me know?

I just added four for Illinois (all of which are reasonably accessible from WI): Animal 911, Arlington Heights A.H., Vernon Hills A.H., and Chicago Exotics A.H.

The Powers That Be probably know this already, but I'll mention it in case this is a bug in need of fixing. The first page of the Vet Directory indicates there are (0) listings for the United States. If I saw that and didn't already know from this thread that there really were listings, I never would have clicked through to find them. Is there any way to either remove the erroneous number, or get the database to count accurately?

I would have posted if there had been a "Reply" button on the thread for posting vets:

City/State (or Province):  St. Louis, Missouri
Vet's Name:      Dr. Jay King, DVM
Clinic/Hospital Name:     Watson Road Veterinary Clinic
Address:   3725 Watson Road, St. Louis, MO  63109
Phone Number:  314-644-1544
Web Site: (if applicable)  http://stlouis.citysearch.com/profile/34844876/st_louis_mo/king_jay_dvm_watson_road_veterinary_clinic.html
E-mail: (if applicable)
Comments:  Is wonderful with rats. Doesn't charge much as he wants people to take their pets (rats for certain) to the vet and have them cared for.  He gets us in (even when we had never been there and had a rattie emergency) right away if needed.

For some reason I still can't log in to post my vets, so hopefully you can update them for me. I can highly recommend ALL of these vets for treatment of rats, but our families first choice is always our beloved Dr. Cecil.

1) Dr. Todd Cecil
Pet Emergency & Specialty Center
5232 Jackson Drive, Suites 102-105
La Mesa, CA 91941
619-462-4800
http://www.pescsandiego.com/ourStaff5.php

2) Dr. Carmine Bausone & Dr. Gary Gallerstein
Acacia Animal Health center
655 W. Citracado Pkwy
Escondido, CA 92025
760-745-8115
http://www.aahc.us/

3) Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins
Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital
2317 Hotel Circle South, Suite C
San Diego, California 92108-3310
619-260-1412
http://www.drexotic.com/index.html

(1) Dr Cecil practices at the 24 hour urgent care center, so he is on call for consultations if the attending vet has questions.
(3) The Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital is on the top floor of a 24 hour urgent care center (VCA), so there is a rat vet on call for consultations.

I added my vet from Littleton, Colorado in the appropriate place (Resources) and it hasn't been added. The only one there is Alameda East Vet.
Please, if I did something wrong I will be happy to re-submit as my vet is awesome with rats and is a very willing listener. I directed her to this site and she often pops in...loves the site and feels half of you could do her job (as far as rats go) :cheeky:. I can be reached at info@creative-worksinc.com if there's anything I need to do. Thanks.

I can't seem to log in to add my info... but here's the vet I use.

Cambrige Veterinary
1724 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02138
617.661.6255

They also have another location in Alston-Brighton that the vet alternates between. The doc here will see rats and I thought he was very thorough and caring. Prices are what one would expect and not completely outrageous.

Sorry, saw that the vet thread was locked and wanted to ensure that there was a vet listed in my local area for the rattie lovers here not to have to make a pretty extensive drive. Hope it helps!

Va  Beach, VA
Dr. Brian Watson
Sajo Veterinary Hospital
Sajo Farm Veterinary Hospital
1094 Diamond Springs Road
Virginia Beach, VA 23455

Dr. Watson is great with my little guys.  Very friendly and a fantastic bedside manner. He was very reassuring to me as a new rattie lover, and the vet techs there are all wonderful (although I often have to steal my ratties back from them since they love them so much).  I have not worked with Dr. Ladell, however, I understand she also has quite a bit of small animal experience, and is the resident exotics vet on the team. They are a little pricey, $65 just for an exam, but very knowledgeable. Highly recommended!!!

I have listed our Dr. King in the St. Louis/IL  area at the Watson Road Veterinary Clinic times (tried), but it never gets posted :(
Does someone on the web board disapprove of him for some reason???? He travels all over the world giving papers and helping animals and keeps the prices low for the ratties so people will care for them.   Sherry (vibrissa)

Virginia Beach, VA (not sure how to add- so here's another one!)

Pet Care Veterinary Hospital
5201 - A Virginia Beach Blvd
Virginia Beach, VA 23462
757-473-0111

Specializes in small animals. Great staff. Even better prices for scheduled appts and meds needed. My typical appt for doxy and baytril (with extra in case needed), a once over with the vet was about $85. Surgeries are a little pricey ($300/rat neuter), but very well trained staff. Office is a little small, but clean and fairly new. Limited parking. Dr. Fox is amazing. I have been taking my guys to them for URIs, lacerations, skin issues, etc. They are a registered dealer of oxbow items (much cheaper than online and most stores locally). AAHA accredited.

I took my rat in for scabs/itchiness and we treated for mites and a skin infection. (Mites didn't show up on the skin scraping.) We treated with Baytril and Revolution and the whole bill (meds included, and the baytril was flavored) came to $12. A girl was coming out as I went in and said she was having her male rat neutered, for $20!! Dr. Tom is very considerate and, ironically, mildly allergic to rats. Now Blackberry is itch free :)

We had a respiratory emergency with our dear rattie the other day and our normal vet skipped town. When we called All Animal Clinic in Orange Park, we were referred to Fleming Island Pet Clinic. I left my directory listing for them on this site. I would definitely go back to them for rat vet services in the future. They saved our little rattie's eye. They got us right in when we called, even though we were new to them..

My vet works at 2 clinics. Definitely ask for her, because not all of the other vets know much about rats.

Dr. Stacia Gilbert
Alpine Animal Clinic
321 Mill Street Danville Pa, 17821
Phone: 570-271-1828
Fax: 570-271-1835

Phone: 570-644-1006
Fax: 570-644-1109

She knows what she's doing, and she has great prices. A whole neuter, with everything included, is only $60. And if I needed to drop off the rat the night before the surgery if I couldn't make the drop off time in the morning, I wouldn't be charged for the stay. If you decide to go to her, please send me a PM so I can give you my information for their referral reward system.

Dr. Durante treats very many treats and has tons of experience with surgeries. I had two tumors removed from my girl at once and she's recovering nicely. I would however recommend that you tell them you want to bring your rat home the same day as they keep them over night typically, and no one is there at night. Very pricey, but do good work.

She's been fantastic with my girls. She's an exotics vet and does "non exotics" lol too
doesn't have a lot of experience with spays, apparently, but she's gotta be a pretty decent surgeon, one time when i was there with one of my cats, there was a dog Dr Krogman had done surgery on, she'd actually constructed an artificial tear duct for the dog without one. i have no idea how difficult that it, but *i* was impressed.

I can second petunia's opinion of Doctor Krogman. I've taken all my rats to her and is a great rattie vet (and general vet). She's removed a lump from Clooney and treated all the little ailments my guys came up with. She is really knowledgeable in exotics.

Westchester, NEW YORK

Animal Hospital of White Plains
36 Pleasant Ave
White Plains, NY
(914) 949-0434‎

Dr. Lagana will see rats. Their clinic is a dog/cat clinic but Dr. Lagana has a soft spot for rats =] The most serious thing I've had to have her do is remove a fairly sized skin tumor which she did flawlessly. She's very good to work with, and reasonably priced.

New York, NEW YORK

I havn't gone here yet, but I thought I'd let everyone know that they have a low cost exotic spay and neuter once a month. I havn't asked how much rat spay/neuters will be yet, but a rabbit spay is $95 so I can only imagine rats would be very reasonably priced. Call the first of every month to find out when it will be. They'll speuter almost anything!

11416 98th N.E.
Kirkland, WA 98033

Phone: 425-823-8411
Fax: 425-823-1712

She does not treat rats exclusively, but she has been treating them for close to ten years, and seems to be very knowledgable. She was very sweet to my rats, and was not rushed at all. When I called, I was told they charge for every rat($48), but on my bill I was only charged one clinic visit for the four of them. My total bill came to less than $110, which compared to my last vet, is very reasonable.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe they will also do payment plans through the clinic.

All in all, I highly recommend her!

(704) 808-PETS  or  (704) 808-7387

He was so great! We had taken one of our babies to another vet and they cauterized his abscess and basically knew nothing about rats. Dr. Wheelock was recommended to us so we went to him for a second opinion. Not only did he examine our babies, but he took pictures or them and the cauterized abscess for his records and gave them carrots. All of the technicians were very nice, as well. The only problem I had was that the front door is actually in the back, haha.

Like everything else, it's kinda screwed up right now. We're long overdue for an upgrade, but it's hard for Goose to find the time to put the necessary work into it (he works about 80 hours a week, which is why you don't see him post, like, EVER). All the great features we have here are a result of a LOT of custom code, which Goose would have to recreate for the upgrade. Hours of work.

I agree, just post the information here for now. :) Hopefully, we'll get that upgrade going soon.  :thumbsup2:

Though I still recommend this vet, I've found her hours are incompatible with my schedule. She has everyother Friday and Saturday off. This wouldn't be an issue, if it wasn't for her leaving every week day by 3pm. I'm still in high school, and don't get home until 2:30pm. The earliest I could get to the clinic is 3pm, and that's if there is no traffic. I'm now using an exotics only clinic down the street, which I'll post below. I'll still use this clinic in the future though if I can't get an appointment  with the other vet.

Dr. Johnson-Delaney

Eastside Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital
13603 100th Ave NE
Kirkland, WA 98034

I took Fuzz here last Thursday, and was really pleased with this vet. She was very nice, and not rushed at all. My appointment had bee for 3pm, but I hit some nasty traffic and didn't get there till 3:10pm. Even if I had been on time, my appointment still would have ran late because she very thoroughly explained what was going on with Fuzz, what treatment she was trying, and what future treatments she would try if his issues didn't clear up. She also gave me extra Metacam in case of future problems or injuries and extra bronchodialator tablets in case of an emergency in the future.

If I had only gotten what I needed for Fuzzies 30 day treatment, my total would have only been about $70 ($50 for the exam itself), but I like that she wanted me to be equipped to handle his problems in the future if I couldn't get him in that moment.

Animal Hospital at West Ridge
Bowling Green, OH 43402
419-354-7387
Dr. David Ernsthausen
http://animalhospitalatwestridge.com/

Recommended by our University animal facilities vet, Dr. Ernsthausen is our second-emergency-vet and has pretty good knowledge of rats. They don't do surgical procedures for rats, but he has been very good for respiratory illnesses and helping out with some malocclusion/tooth issues. Knew the doxy/Baytril combo and has flavorings that my girls think are treats :) The staff was very receptive to rats and always smile and give some scritches when I bring someone in. He does not charge exotic rates, and subsequent visits after the initial $35 exam are medication-cost-only. They don't charge for bringing in a buddy, either, so long as an initial exam had been paid for previously. He's been a good go-to, affordable general rat health vet for my stay here in NW Ohio.

Dunno if this has already been mentioned (in fact, if might have been mentioned by me :BlueDumboSmileTongue:), but in the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area I highly, highly, highly (ad infinitum) recommend SEAVS: Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services.  Everyone who works there is incredibly, wonderfully skilled with ratties, and they're very interested/up on in new/alternative remedies (in addition to traditional/well-established ones).  Every little thing they do indicates that they know what they're doing - amber glass bottles for meds, etc., etc., etc.  Plus, several of the vets (and tons of the techs) have had ratties themselves and love them.  Here's the web site:

In Clinton, MO, Dr. Terry Mitchell at the Clinton Animal Hospital is the only local vet who is really qualified to treat exotics.  He's very good about being willing to trait ratties for injuries, illnesses, pain, etc. and not just instantly recommending euthanasia (as many 'all-purpose' vets are wont to do when it comes to ratties).  I never had to have him perform any surgeries, but I would've trusted Dr. Mitchell (and no one else) to do them if it had been necessary:

I don't think I have posted enough on this forum to post there or something, but here is a Vet recc. because it appears there are no Canadian vets:

City/State (or Province): Saint John, New Brunswick
Vet's Name: Dr. Patty Moffett
Clinic/Hospital Name: Loch Lomond Veteranary Hospital
Address: 1964 Loch Lomond Road, Saint John, NB E2J 2A3
Phone Number: 506-696-2550
Web Site: (if applicable) N/A
E-mail: (if applicable) N/A
Comments: Everyone working at Loch Lomond is GREAT with all animals, especially rats. When one of my first rats, Ivy, needed vet care, both the vet techs and the vet treated her wonderfully, and fell in love with her; she is experienced with rats, although the one downside is that from what I know (last time I called to find out) she won't do neutering on girls as it is an invasive procedure she is not familiar with in such a small animal.

Dr. Doering is absolutely amazing. She cares about my rats so much. Peanut has gone through a tooth extraction with her. Ive gone through some URI's as well. I can e-mail or call with question's and she always gets back to me. It's $50 for a visit and I believe it's $25 for your first time.

Dr. Obegi is AMAZING! You can tell Obegi loves rats - she kisses on them, baby talks them, and gives great advice regarding food and healthcare. Prices are very reasonable too. I drive all the way from Lacey to see her because I trust what she has to say.

Dr. Beth Weisberger treats my exotics. She's absolutely wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. Prices are awesome ($90 for a nueter, check ups $33, tumor removals under $150. I never spend more than $65 for a visit + meds for URI/ear infection/etc.). The staff is nice for the most part, and helpful. Everyone adores the rats and loves to love on them when they come in. They also see rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, reptiles, cats, dogs, birds.

For anyone in the North or Central NJ area....

Dr. Kim Somjen at Belle Mead Animal Hospital in Hillsborough, NJ. AMAZING to say the least! She was so friendly, and knowledgable. She told us her history with rats which included MANY rats as pets. She knew exactly what I was talking about when I said Martin's-695, and she also asked questions most vets don't ask, like what cages they're in, what bedding I use, what I feed them everyday, etc. She finally diagnosed my one rat which another vet said was "perfectly healthy" (PS she has myco). She was SO good with my rats, and they responded so well to her. The rest of the staff was also amazing.

*She was also familiar with GooseMoose and said she used to be on here!

If it's not too far for you to travel, you HAVE to try her- I will never go anywhere else.

For Northern California (Chico):

Dr. Susan Evers
Evers Veterinary Clinic
1150 El Monte Avenue
Chico, CA 95928
(530) 343-0713
http://www.eversvet.vetsuite.com/ (http://www.eversvet.vetsuite.com/)

Dr. Evers took care of my rats and turtles when I was growing up. She is friendly, knowledgeable and caring. Her practice mainly sees dogs and cats, but she is very good with rodents and rabbits.

For the North Bay Area (Marin County):

Central Marin Cat & Exotic Hospital
4144-A Redwood Highway
San Rafael, CA 94903
(415) 479-CATS
http://www.catsandexotics.com/ (http://www.catsandexotics.com/)

They are a bit pricey ($60 for an office visit - ouch!) but well worth the money. I have used them for illnesses, injuries, lump removals and spayings and have had very good results.
They (especially Dr. Lankes) were also incredibly supportive and understanding when I had to make the Big Decision to put Sniffles to sleep  :'(.
They see just about everything except dogs: cats, birds, rodents, rabbits, ferrets, turtles, lizards, snakes, fish and wild animals.

Oregon:

Dr. Scott Kramer
Deschutes Veterinary Clinic
25 NW Olney Ave.
Bend, OR 97701
(541) 382-2481
dvc@bendbroadband.com
Office visit: $45

Montana:

Dr. Shoni Card
Pruyn Veterinary Hospital
2501 S Russell St
Missoula, MT 59801
(406) 829-8150
Office visit: $36

Both of these vets are amazing.

Dr. Card performed at least nine surgeries on my rats (one of which was exceedingly difficult). This woman has some impressively steady hands, I'll tell you that much.  I would trust her with anything. She even has pet rats of her own! She is a great problem-solver and really explores every option with you. Another thing I appreciated about Dr. Card was that when she didn't know something or was unsure about something, she always took the time to research and find the best answer possible. We liked Dr. Card so much that we continued to take our rats to see her even after moving an hour away. I don't know how many (if any) of you live in/near western Montana, but if you do, Dr. Card is a fantastic vet.

We were sad to say goodbye to Dr. Card when we moved to Oregon, but our new vet, Dr. Kramer, is equally awesome and also a rat lover. Best of all, he has lots of experience treating rats. I'm continually surprised by the vastness of his rat-related knowledge. He has helped our rats through some extremely specific, difficult-to-diagnose and/or treat conditions that many vets would be left scratching their heads over, so I have complete faith in his expertise.  He is also very kind and gentle with our rats.  He even knows their names! And he's always willing to discuss things with us and explain why he's choosing a particular treatment option.  I recommend him 100%.

I would NOT recommend the following vet:

Dr. Darlene Osgood
Delafield Small Animal Hospital
20 Crossroads Court
Delafield, Wisconsin 53018-2035
http://www.delafieldsmallanimalhospital.com/

I have been her client for 6 years now. I just called for a quote to neuter my new rat:

$437.63!!!!!!! And she claims to be a small exotics specialist!

This after I wasn’t too pleased with the results I had working through my cat’s recent UT issues with her.

A few years back I also brought one of my rats to her with a prolapsed uterus. Both times I came into her office, I was pretty much just given a salve and sent home. The rat didn’t live love enough to make it to the next appointment (which I believe was the pre-surgery appointment).

I also at one point had a colony of 50 mice (all of whom I interacted with daily and knew by name and personality). I had a URI in my largest girl mouse colony at one point, and she charged me a separate office fee for every single mouse I brought to her (all at once, so it hardly spent more of her time than it would have to see one mouse).

While she isn’t all bad (I once took a rat to her with a fast-growing tumor 1/3 its body weight that was removed with no other problems), I’ve lost patience with her. Needless to say, I’m looking for a new vet.

Not sure if the Vet Directory made the move with the forum yet or not, and can't remember if I had listed either of these there...but since its not findable at the moment anyways I'll list them here too.

Central IL

All Creatures Animal Hospital
2001 Linview Ave.
Urbana, IL 61801
217-328-4143
http://www.allcreaturesah.com

My primary vet, they've been very good with all my rats. For my rats I've had surgeries done here (spays, neuters, tumor removals, etc), bloodwork, eye exams, URI treatment, abscess treatments, etc. Have also had rats PTS there (and they did it properly, sedation, etc), necropsies done, and they offer clay paw prints, cremation, ashes back etc if people want those options. They seem quite knowledgable on the care of rats and other exotics, and are equipped to deal with them on a regular basis easily. I have seen zoos bring their animals here before (saw a meerkat from a zoo about an hour away there!) Dr. Sandra Murrell-Ritter is the vet here who sees rats.

University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital
1008 West Hazelwood Drive
Urbana, IL 61802
217-333-5300
http://vetmed.illinois.edu/vth/services/exotic.php

Another good choice - also has emergency care available. Often a bit more expensive than other local vets in the area, but they are a referral hospital and e-clinic as well, with 24/7 staffing and monitoring of animals, and all sorts of specialties (oncology, dermatology, etc). Dr. Ken Welle, one of the founders of All Creatures listed above has recently moved here, and has seen several of my rats in the past. I've also had experience with Dr. Whittington when I was working at the shelter, since she often volunteered her time to do rabbit spays and neuters. (Dr. Sandra and Dr. Ken also helped out the shelter too! With guinea pigs, herps, etc)

Dr C R Bhatia, DVM
Animal Clinic of Warrington
1352 Easton Road
Warrington, PA 18974
215-343-4223

Dr Bhatia is a GEM! He has gotten  rave reviews on Yahoo:  (he didn't even know about it until I gave him a printout of the reviews)...he has long hours, hours on Sat and Sun if you request it, and he works two days a week at a local humane society clinic.

He is very good with rats and has a lot of experience with them. He is reasonable and very, very caring. He is a no frills, WYSIWYG vet....he calls to find out how your pet is doing (he called one dog owner from his vacation in India!), and the humane society clinic he also works for sends sympathy cards when a pet is euthanized.

He spayed two of my rats for $175.00 each; removed tumors from two others, and did a hernia repair for another rat. Office visit: $39.00 ($30.00 if you go to him at the Women's Humane Society Clinic, Richlieu Rd., Bensalem, PA, but its first come first served and it is a mad dash to get there at 6:45 AM to be first in line before they open at 7:30 AM!) I just go to his private clinic in Warrington to avoid that aggravation, even if it means an extra 9 dollars a visit.)

HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended! (http://local.yahoo.com/info-26808205-animal-clinic-of-warrington-warrington [/url)

I found a good vet who is friendly to rats in Worcester, Massachusetts, which shouldn't be too far a drive for a lot of people in central Massachusetts and even beyond.

Westside Animal Clinic (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rlz=1C1CHKZ_enUS431US431&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=westside+animal+clinic+worcester&fb=1&gl=us&hq=westside+animal+clinic&hnear=0x89e406585a2a8b0d:0x9e137dd87fca4d6d,Worcester,+MA&cid=7065367313372400613)
262 Mill Street, Worcester, MA 01602-3113
(508) 756-4411

Dr. Klingener is Westside's small animal vet. She is pretty knowledgeable about rats though some of her ideas are a little outdated. I wrote about my experience with her here (http://www.goosemoose.com/rfc/index.php?topic=4092534.0).

I really like this vet. Unfortunately, they only take new patients at certain times of the year from what I have read. While I had no trouble getting an appointment, you might. Also, from what I have experienced at the front desk, they are not likely to allow you to talk to the vet over the phone to get advice.

Lenoir, NC

Caldwell Animal Hospital
230 Nuway Circle  Lenoir, NC 28645
(828) 754-4545

And here's their website with info and pics of their facilities and staff.
http://www.caldwellanimalhospital.vetsuite.com/Templates/Clean.aspx

I haven't been to them for my boys yet but they do have a small animal specialist on staff.

They are great with dogs, though. My mom took Raven when she was little 8 years ago and they did a good job for her. They spayed her for us (she was a shelter rescue) for a pretty decent price. My jack-russell/poodle mix, Bug-a-boo, was sent to get fixed at a low cost clinic done by the local humane society and they sent her back as they discovered she had a heart murmur and didn't have the equipment to monitor her. They sent her to Caldwell and they spayed her at no extra cost to us than what we had paid to the humane society ($35). The most recent thing they did was take care of my grandma's dog, Bo. He had a herniated intestine and they had to go in and try to save him. They almost lost him but they didn't give up and today he's happy and healthy. They also didn't want to put him under again so they cut off $150 from my grandma's bill since she opted to have him fixed at the same time. I'm about to take Dally in to see them this Friday.

For NW Indiana, there are two main vets:

Dr. Andrea Carlson
Southlake Animal Hospital
3570 E. Lincoln Highway
Merrillville, IN 46410
Phone: (219) 942-0909

Dr. Carlson is my personal vet.

----------------------------------------

Dr. Russell Mejeur
Arbor View Animal Hospital
244 West US Highway 6
Valparaiso, IN 46385-7911
Phone: (219)762-7267

One of the best rat vets north of Indianapolis.

----------------------------------------

Dr. Melissa Dickinson
Cooley Animal Clinic
3021 45th Street
Highland, Indiana 46322
Phone: (219) 924-3877

Dr. Dickinson knows the basics and may be a decent third choice one day... but for now, she lacks surgery and a healthy chunk of basics (you can't neuter male rats?)

I couldn't figure out where the directory was  ??? So here goes.

I MOST CERTAINLY RECOMMEND:
Broward Avian And Exotic Animal Hospital
1730 University Drive
Coral Springs, FL 33071
United States
http://www.exoticanimalcare.com/

This place is amazing. There are two vets there, I see Dr. Diaz who has rats himself. One of my rats has just had problem after problem, as soon as one thing is solved another pops up. Dr. Diaz explains everything in detail and is very patient with my questions (I always have a lot). He is also very understanding when I start to cry out of nowhere haha. I have only heard good things from multiple people about the other vet, Dr. Kelleher. I actually know the pharmacist who supplies for them and he raves about her. I think the initial visit is $45 and return visits are $30 something. Honestly, my bills stack up but I know I'm not getting screwed. Everyone there is always extremely friendly and helpful, it's an unbeatable environment. One of the women who works at the front desk, I never remember anyone's name since I'm usually a mess when I go there, has rats as well and talking to her is great as she's had issues with hers as well. Also a plus is they carry oxbow products and the only other place I know of that has regal rat down here is a pet store in Boca (but that place is great too, it's called Fins Furs and Feathers). I could go on and on about how grateful I am to have this place.

Now for one I DO NOT RECOMMEND:
Oakland Park Animal Hospital
2200 West Oakland Park Blvd.
Oakland Park, FL 33311

I saw a male doctor here before I discovered Broward Avian and Exotic, but I do not remember his name. I actually went there when I moved into the area just to get a check up, both boys were healthy at the time. I basically wanted to find a vet in the area so I would know where to go if something did go wrong. I remember the place was not very clean, nor was anyone inviting. He did the basic stuff, weighed them etc., then he tried to sell me treatments they didn't show any signs that they needed. He handed me a list of typical preventative procedures that should be done if I wanted to make sure they were completely healthy, things like a de-wormer, chest ultrasound or something, etc. He didn't explain anything in detail, he was just trying to scare me into spending more money like that's what I should be doing if I was a good owner. I felt completely overwhelmed and taken advantage of. Their website says they have 21 likes on facebook, but I have no idea why.

Countryside Veterinary Hospital (http://countrysideveterinaryhospital.com/)
Can't recommend these folks highly enough! Wonderful, compassionate vets (who, even if they aren't rat specialists, will LISTEN to information you bring in and do their own research, as well) and office staff. Also, open on weekends. Reasonably priced office visits and procedures.

Hey peeps! So I really want to find a good and affordable vet for my ratties. I live in Montrose CA, and its all pretty expensive. I found one of those "oh well, we've fixed rabbits before" -___- so not the same thing. But I really want to fix my babies ESPECIALLY because i want to adopt my Sookie's brother, but I can probably only do that if I can AFFORD to get him fixed. Any good places?

Jeff Stortz, DVM

I just took my rats here this past weekend and Dr. Stortz has been wonderful to work with. He listened to my suggestions and has worked with me. I needed to get Baytril compounded because the form we started with wasn't working for me, and he even price-shopped to get me the best deal (he found a place with overnight shipping that's cheaper than the local one he found). He emailed me shortly after the appointment to let me know about the possibility of getting it compounded, in case I had problems with it, and even answered my emails after-hours on a Saturday.

He was also able to talk knowledgeably about bearded dragons with my boyfriend, so I feel he would be great with any exotic. We'll certainly be using him for our future vet appointments.

Edit: I forgot to mention, when I first booked my appointment with him, I asked if there was any price difference for bringing in three rats at once. He said as long as they were showing the same symptoms, he could work out a deal for me, and quoted me a price over the phone for the exams + the meds he thought he'd be prescribing. It wasn't until I got my receipt that I found he only charged me one examination fee! And even with the changes in prescription that came up during the visit, his quoted price wasn't far off. In fact, my actual total came out slightly less than the quoted price. The compounded Baytril is adding a fair bit to the total price, but I'm still very impressed, especially after the aforementioned price-shopping he did on my behalf.

Kentucky
Frankfort

Dr. Jessica Estill, DVM
Cornerstone Animal Care
1410 Versailles Rd., Suite 11
Frankfort, KY 40601
Phone: (502) 352 2521
cornerstoneanimalcare@fewpb.net
http://cornerstoneanimalcare.com/

I live in Lexington and make the 20-30 minute trip any time I need my rats to be seen (non-emergency of course!). I will also be taking my ferrets here. Dr. Estill has an incredible bed side manner - she is gently, calming, quietly coaxing my nervous boys to sit in her hands while trying to listen to their lungs. She doesn't mind if my boyfriend or I get involved with the process of weighing and checking them. She ALWAYS does some sort of research before we get there and listens to all of my anxious/worried questions. Dr. Estill treats every animals as if they are her own and is always very concerned whenever we come in.

Cornerstone compounds Doxy and Baytril in house although they have a limited selection of flavors. Dr. Estill is shopping around for me for other flavors in fact and is helping me find the cheapest route available.

A full exam (general exam plus weight) is $25.00 for each rat. Meds are cheap although the compounding fee tacks on $15. I've never paid more than $80 for a whole vet visit and meds.

I don't know if she will do surgery on rats - I've never thought to ask.

Unfortunately, I think my rats are the only ones they still see at All Animal, which is sad because Dr. Runnfeldt and the staff there are awesome (and they all love rats!). Fleming Island is their sister clinic, and I have heard good things about them as well.

Here is the info for them:

In Ventura the best small animal vet that I have found is Dr. Fowell at East Ventura Animal Hospital. She is not 100% knowledgeable about rat illnesses but she is an amazing surgeon. She neutered my 2 boys for $129 each and she will also spay rats for that price. Tumor removals are 200-250. If you bring her print outs of info you find online she will read and listen and seems open to learning even more about rats. She spays and neuters rabbits for the Camarillo shelter rescue rabbits. She is the only one at that clinic that I would trust to see a rat. Some of the other vets there are afraid of them!

ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES I suggest (not for regular appointments because they over charge to the high heavens)
The Center for Bird & Exotic Animal Medicine
11401 Northeast 195th Street  Bothell, WA 98011
(425) 486-9000

I DO NOT SUGGEST ACCESS (11536 Lake City Way Northeast  Seattle, WA 98125 (206) 364-1660) although they claim to have experience with small animals, I took a rat there when I was a very inexperienced owner and they told me to NEBULIZE BAYTRIL! And did not give me any nebulizing medications, or meds other than Baytril (which I was directed to use incorrectly). The vet led me to become very confused, over charged me for the very little care he provided, and ultimately ended with the death of my rat.

Please help, I am looking for a vet to remove two tumors from my male rattie. There is a local vet but he has a flat fee of $375 to do anything. I will go to him if necessary, but I am looking for something a little cheaper if possible. I live on Long Island, New York; more specifically in St. James. If anybody knows of a cheaper vet that treats exotics in the area please get back to me! Please send me a message with a vet and price if you can. Thank you so much!

Any good vets in central Pennsylvania?  I tried Blair Animal Hospital in Duncansville, and the only vet there that accepts small mammals didn't seem to know much about rats at all. I'll believe him enough, plus what was replied to me here, that my male hairless rat has a tumor.
I would love to get it removed, but surgery scares me more than anything. And i'm doubting i'll find any vet in a reasonable driving distance that's competent enough..

Everything you will ever need.
Looks like there's other states under it too.

Of those, I wouldn't recommend Animal and Avian in Strongsville or Lakewood Animal Hospital (If that was even mentioned). I go to Roberts and Wendt and I've been to North Olmsted. I like my vet, but they're not good for extensive testing/complicated stuff. My SO goes to Northview and likes them. They're willing to do surgeries, but haven't experienced any yet. They also are open for emergency hours. Also, a few members and other vets have recommended Gary Riggs. The Northcoast site has a section actually dedicated to rats which impressed me.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Dr. Paul Levitas
Animal Hospital on Mt. Lookout Square
3175 Linwood Ave
Cincinnati, OH 45208
(513) 871-8866

Very affordable, extremely knowledgeable, and always open to suggestions and willing to learn new things.  Does o-spays (where just the ovaries are removed, much less invasive than a full spay and has same benefits) and neuters for around $100, full spays are a little more.  Has done many tumor removals and speuters for the rescue and we have been very happy with him.  Very experienced in many other exotics as well.

Dr. Paul Yehle
Elmbrook Veterinary Clinic

What can I say about Dr. Paul?  Been taking my boys to him for the last 3 years.  He may not know everything there is to know about rats, but he's more than willing to listen and learn.  I usually get to be the assistant for exams.  Very compassionate, and has a lot of respect for the little guys.  He's neutered 2 of my boys, not cheap $200-$215 including meds, but I wouldn't trust anyone else.

I cannot find the link for the vet directory, idk if it is just me, all I see is the Pet Portal. Under the Pet portal there are no links for the directory that I can find. Anyway I wanted to add to the directory if it isn't already there:

Jefferson Animal Hospital
$50 for a check up; no fixed fee for surgery.
606 Patchogue Road
Port Jefferson, New York 11776
(631) 473-0415
Monday - Thursday: 8:00am - 6:00pm
Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm
Saturday 8:00am - 1:00pm
Sunday: Closed

Well I went to this vet after going to the Centereach Animal Hospital which I DO NOT recommend under any circumstance, except maybe an emergency in which you live closer to the one and are sure the rat would die on the longer trip to Jefferson.

When I went to CAH for the apointment prior to tumor removal on my rat I saw the vet for only 3 minutes, he did nothing other than quickly look at the site of the tumor and then leave the room leaving the weighing and other work to the assitant. When I had simple questions she did not know the answers, so she surely wasn't an exotics vet (at least I hope not), she seemed to have the same level of knowledge as the front desk receptionist (none). They did not listen to his heart rate or his lungs. After the surgery they refused to give pain medication, claiming they gave him a shot that would last 5 days; which does not exist (for dogs it may last that long, rats have a much faster metabolism), so my poor boy went without pain meds. They also gave me essentially no information on after-surgery care other than to leave a cone on his head and to call if it looked infected. They did not have rat cones and had made one out of pointy plastic material that was digging into his neck. They would not tell me his weight, so I could not ask here for his dose in childrens ibuprofen (I think that's what you guys always recommend). I had to go back for more needless syringes for giving the meds since Marshmellow chewed the tip off of the first one, the assistants attempted to give me one that still had a piece of needle left inside the tip, they had cut the external needle part off, I would not take it and had them give me a new one. They tried to give me this even though I had just explained that he chewed the tip off of the first one (so they obviously are stupid or careless). For the stitches removal appointment they scruffed him causing him to shriek before they even went to remove the stitches. I tried to ask them not to handle my animal like that, they ignored me. They did finally stop scruffing him and he stopped flailing and squeaking entirely for the rest of the appointment. I brought him back the day after that because he had a small lump I just noticed at the same site(didn't before because I didn't want to poke and pinch at his stitches) after the stitches were removed (one week after surgery). After again scruffing my rat, that was just how they decided to pick him up (even though he absolutely does not bite, and had never tried to), they decided it was scar tissue and sent him home. In actuality it was a tumor, apparently they had missed a piece of his large tumor and it had started to regrow. I will never be going back there again, regardless on if missing a part of a tumor is a common mistake, just for the way that they handled him, which was unprofessional and uncalled for.

When I went to JAH upon realizing that the scar tissue was growing and was undoubtably a tumor (and I had saved up enough money to have something done about it), I was amazed. My rat was not treated as if he is something to man handle and was treated the same way a dog or a cat would be, with care. The vet very carefully and gently picked him up to examine the tumor. Speaking softly to him the whole time; because at this point after previous terror my rat was terrified to even come out of the carrier, where the first time he excitedly greeted the vet and got manhandled; my rat was fear pooping the entire time and shaking from his past experiences. Dr. Rose petted him while he was on the table, trying to get him to calm down, noticing Marshmellow was terrified, the vet asked me to hold him the rest of the examination so it would be "less stressful for the little guy." He listened to his heart and lungs, telling us they sounded strong and clear (shouldn't do a surgery otherwise without serious risk to the animal). He then spoke to us (me and my mom) for over an hour, about our options, that we could get a biopsy to see if it was cancerous, x-rays to see (if it was cancerous, we didn't have to get a biopsy first though) if it had spread to his chest, and surgery. We decided against the biopsy and x-rays just for the price, and to just go ahead with the surgery because even if it gave him another happy month we were content. He said he understood the decision, and then went in detail to explain how the surgery would be done. That they would be using proper anesthetics for rats, that they would be removing the excess skin (which the previous vet had not removed, he had been saggy after the last procedure), and he went over all of the aftercare for the surgery with us right then and there, saying he would be giving metcam and baytril, which had me relieved that my boy would have pain meds this time. He said he would also treat very agressively, going a layer deeper than he thought necessary to ensure to the best of his ability that he had removed the entire tumor. He used disolvable stitches for the surgery so Marshmellow wouldn't have to endure the removal process again. After the surgery when we picked him up, he gave me a paper and again outlined the aftercare. He also gave his business cell phone number so I could text him pictures of the stitches if I had any concerns, so I didn't have to drive all the way back out there. He also had a real cones made out of a proper material, not scaps laying around the office. He is a wonderful vet, and I highly recommend him. He treats all animals as important and handles them with love and care. He gave me a huge discount on the surgery after hearing what I went through last time, and was very sympathetic about my financial situation; he even offered a payment plan if I needed it.

Marshmellow is most likely cancer free as four months after the second tumor removal he remains tumor-less. I wish I had gone to JAH first instead of CAH (please don't bring your rat to CAH, I still think of how they handled him in front of me and am terrified how they handled him when I wasn't there). Sorry this was so long I just wanted to share my experiences, and not just say CAH was a bad place, but to truly explain why, no animal should go through what my poor boy went through at their hands.

I went to get my 2 month old rat girls checked out. She was very friendly and handled them expertly. I ended up asking her a few questions that she didn't know the answer to (she is probably in her late 20s), but she seems eager to learn and enthusiastic. Comments:
This is the clinic i did co-op at, and work now and the vet, Dr Yelen, actually has pet rats of his own. He also use to work in a lab with rats when he was a vet student. He is very friendly and takes the time to get to know you and your animal (iv never met a vet like this). An appointment is $30.  For my little guy a month of baytril was about $60 and a month of doxy was $35. I have never met such a friendly vet. He would love to have the opportunity to become a "rat vet". His dosages are correct on the medicines, Plus they are a rescue based vet office, always lending a hand to rescues. Dr Yelen ins always helping a hand on the weekend for Pet Friends For life, he also previously worked for the humane society. They have taken in many cats over the years, and have been able to place them all in loving homes.

Dr Yelen was really helpful with Thumper, he was the first vet to actually try Baytril & Doxy together for him, and his dosages where accurate. Thumper has now been off the meds for a week and he is still breathing wonderfully! Compared to the vets i have talked to, and been at, id say that Dr. Yelen is the bets rat vet her in London ON.

@amanda, thanks for this, my four legged family and I will be moving to Barrie soon, if I need to travel a little farther from home to go to a quality vet I'm glad I've got this reference! I'll be sad to be leaving the excellent care of the vet I have where I currently live in Asheville, NC.

Dr. Tim McMullan- Pinnacle Animal Hospital. http://www.pinnacleanimalhospital.com/
I first found this vet when my cat was having a seizure, and I was living in a new apartment kinda far from the vet I was previously seeing. I rushed kitty to the closest open place, Pinnacle, which had just opened its doors for business that week. After diagnosing kitty diabetic I've become a regular visitor there and have always received the best of care and very fair prices. I've watched them grow from brand new to a major contributor in our local rescue community. When I decided to adopt ratties, Dr. Tim took great care of them for neutering, antibiotic treatment, and getting rid of nasty mites. Several months ago, Dr. Tim took on some ratty rescues of his own after having removed tumors from some girls dropped at a shelter. I highly recommend Pinnacle aka DR. Tim for any animal care. They're great! And they're always doing pro bono work for shelters, helping rehome critters, and giving me a good multi rat discount!

Is this directory still in use? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I could just be missing it, but I can't find the resources link at all. I found a link in a post, but it took me to an error message.

I would really like to know where it is located now as well! I can't find it since the server move, and I'm in pretty desperate need of finding a good vet around here (NE Dallas area) for my girl Lucy, because she has some tumors that need to be removed. Can anybody post the link? :-\
I also can't find it. ???

I can't find it either and am looking for good vets in Southern Nevada with neuter experience.
Anyone?

I'm not sure where the directory went, so I'll post it up here for right now in case it can help anyone in the Southern Suburb area of Chicago, IL.

Suburban Animal Hospital
10929 S Cicero Ave
Oak Lawn, IL 60453
(708) 636-3600

This seems to be the most affordable place to take Rats around here. I've searched and searched for an exotic-friendly veterinarian that wouldn't completely break the bank, and none met both requirements and most were way too far away for me to drive on top of it. Little did I know, our family vet of well over 20 years can take my boys in! The staff at Suburban Animal Hospital are very friendly, helpful and know their stuff. They don't handle too many rats and will require a specialist's eye in a lot of cases, but Dr. Latoza will be able to prescribe you medications for your rats if the need be, as he's done for me. Plus, you can't beat the price on the bill! It was a total of $30 for the appointment and the presription (Sulfadimethoxine, I'm going back tomorrow for Doxy and Baytril)  I can't say it'll be the same price for you, but it sure as heck beats the $65 appointment fee of some places around here!

I have no idea where the diretory is either. But I'll post mine! I don't think there are many people in my area but it's worth a shot. I emailed them in advance, apparently they do have a vet that sees reptiles and rats but he does not work there every day, so it's a good idea to call in advance. It's a very nice facility inside, fairly newer (built in the last 10 years). I've asked them the prices of neutering/spaying rats, but have not yet gotten a reply so I'll update this thread with more info/experiences! They do work with the Animal Shelter, which is about 2 minutes down the street from them.

I live in NYC and have gathered the information of some vets that will see rats. I have also called some of them up and asked how much it would cost for a rat. Out of this list, I have only had personal experience with Dr. Anthony Pilny, but I know that all of these vets have seen rats in the past. Dr. Pilny is great, seems knowledgable, and I am told is the only full time board certified avian and exotic pet specialist in NYC. He also keeps in communication via e-mail after your visit, which is great for questions and followups. He also did a great job of spaying my rat. Feel free to PM me with further questions about my experience with Dr. Pilny.

This list was taken from a post by Raquel on the NYC Rat Meetup thread. The names in parentheses are the people/rat owners who vouched for these vets.

I can't find the resources link to look for vets. I am new on this forum so I don't see the resources link at the top of the page like the post says. Can anyone help me or post a direct link to it for me?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have been searching for a vet that treats exotic pets. After asking around with family and friends I have found this clinic, they have two vets on board that deal with exotic pets, and have been doing so for many years. All the people I spoke to had nothing but positive thoughts on these doctors and clinic.

I live in Mt. Carmel, Pa, about 10-20 mins from the clinic. Here is the info on the clinic:
1225 W. Spruce St. Coal Township Pa, 17866
Phone: 570-644-1006
Fax: 570-644-1109

They also have a second clinic that the exotic vets switch with:
6 Northumberland Street, Danville, Pa 17821
Phone: 570-271-1828
Fax: 570-271-1835

Hope this info will help someone.

Beth

Breathing life into an old thread.. there's a bunch of vet threads, so I'm sorry if this isn't the most current or best one.

I'm getting ready to move and looking for recommendation for vets in the southern New Mexico area.
