Title: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: Dori on November 05, 2007, 07:11:05 PM
I'd like to see how everyone decorated their Feisty Ferret cage; I am thinking about getting one to replace my RUUD cage. Thanks!

I just bought a Feisty Ferret for my three 7-8 month old boys :)
Top Half

Bottom

Whole cage

Yes one of the ramps I "borrowed" from my FN because one of my wussy baby boys didn't like the solid ramps lol-- the bottom ramp I left out and just put the igloo under it for them to get up and down through the hole in the balcony

That looks so good! I love your colors and that Easter basket! It looks like the left door does not open, is that right? Do you notice it being a problem? I am thinking now I might put my two girls in there instead, do you think the bar spacing is ok for girls?

I don't mind that only one side opens- to be perfectly honest it makes me nervous with the FN to open both sides. I am always afraid the boys piling up(and pushing each other) on the balcony will fall out lol so I tend to open only the right side unless I am cleaning. The Feisty Ferret is a good cage- not quite the quality that the FN is but I am pleased with it. It opens a total of HALF the cage- much bigger space than the Martins. I can reach everything and get my head and shoulder/arm in with no problem. I love that I can reach through and give scritches and get kisses. The bar spacing is 7/8 ths of an inch. I don't think adult girlies could get through- My big boys seem lost in it lol- there is a good amount of space.

My cage looks MUCH cuter than this now -- I will get new pix soon. I now have liners I made myself and cubes and such courtesy of Maeve. :)  This is back before than when I was using towels.

I've had mine about 2 weeks. I'm really happy with it. My girls are on the small side and can not get anything but their noses through the bars. I like that only one side opens up b/c I have more control of who comes out. Very easy to clean. The stairs are made of plastic so I just rinsed them in the sink. The only thing I didn't like was the bar spacing on the middle shelf so I bought 12x12 ceramic tiles and covered them with flannel.

I have a few questions for anyone who owns a feisty ferret.

If anyone has the time, or wouldn't mind doing this, could you measure how tall the ACTUAL cage is, not including the wheels and rack thing beneath? Either that or measure the wheels up to the bottom of the cage. I'm trying to get a picture of how much room the rat will have in the cage. I want to do an accurate cage calculator with it. How many rats can it comfortably fit?
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: fakesalt on November 11, 2007, 11:12:41 AM
rodent, i don't have an FF or an FN, but i'm guessing that the FF is about the same size as the FN, and a 2-story FN can hold about 15 rats, give or take. more girls can fit, less boys can fit.
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: aphoeniceus on November 11, 2007, 11:25:17 AM
Just by looking at the overall dimensions of both cages the FF is: 31.5"W x 20.5"D x 55"H and the FN is: 36in L x 25in W x 62in H.  This is including the stand.  The FN has greater length and width, and probably has a higher stand.  According to the cage calculator the FN (without the stand) can hold 6 rats per level, so 12 total.  I would think about 8-9rats fit in the FF.  I couldn't find the actual dimensions of the FF without the stand so this is just my guesstimate.

Thank you.

I think I might go with the FN. I'm still kind of unsure, though. I'd like to save $200 so I can get the Ferret Nation. I will buy it at ferret.com for $154 (Unless it goes up again, then I think I will get the FF) I might end up having to modify the Ferret Nation, since I own girls. Ugh! This is so hard! I even have a thread about it, but I still can't totally decide, even though I'm already leaning somewhere.  :BangHead:

You could just get the one level FN, as that would be plenty of space for your 3 girls, and still allow for future GGMR! :)
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: Rodent on November 11, 2007, 12:03:50 PM
That is true, and I would like to get two more girls, but then it would be a little crowded and sometimes I can't get them out for playtime, so with five females and a two level FN would provide alot of room...but the one level is a good idea. I might still have to go with the 142.   :-\ :)

Can someone take a picture of this cage with a cat in it, like the FN? Or with a dog next to it? I really want to get an idea of how big this cage really is.

Lovely cages, guys!  :thumbsup2:

I was wondering though, judging by this picture (http://www.ferretdepot.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/485large.jpg) I found though, it appears there are 2 circular holes in the platforms, no doubt for food dishes.  But I couldn't find anything about the dishes being included with the cage?!  Were they?  Or did you all have to buy those seperately somewhere??

Also!  Could someone please give me the dimensions?  I'm going to be getting the Feisty Ferret cage for Christmas, so I'd like to have liners all made and ready before the cage comes.  Sooooo, I need the dimensions of the 2 floors as well as the 2 platforms.  I'm guessing creating liners for this cage will be difficult, considering there are two circular holes in the platforms.  I'm not really sure how to go about working around that...

My partner and I would musing over the holes in the shelves while looking at the display model. We figured out (at least, we think) that you can switch the ramp so that it's under the hole. However, I don't know how well that would work if you did that with both, and how the ladder from the middle floor would hit, and it's something I'd love to know about, too.

Ahh, yeah I hadn't thought about that.  I could see that.

Somebody with experience with the Feisty Ferret cage please let me know lol!

I ended up just putting my fleece over the hole.  I.e., the fleece is attached to the cage anyway (I use large safety pins) so it doesn't really matter -- once the fleece is over the whole shelf it's like the hole isn't there.

I did try attaching the ramps so the rats could come up through the holes when they come up the ramps, and I think that's the intended purpose, but (1) it made the angle kind of steep, and (2) it made affixing the liners difficult.  So I just covered them, as above.
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: kav831 on November 12, 2007, 04:55:40 PM
You can move the ladder either in front or behind the hole. On the bottom shelf I put it behind and put a box under it to make it less steep (pix above) and the top I put the ladder in the front and they just don't use that hole.  I guess ferrets are longer so they can just climb thru those holes.
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: w1ngs0fate on November 12, 2007, 05:13:53 PM
Mmmmm, so it is to crawl through then.  Okay!  Lol I was just confused.  I guess I can just get liners to cover those.

Oh, a little off topic, but what kind of safety pins/clips do you use to hold down your liners??  And where can you get them from?
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: pawsplus on November 13, 2007, 10:22:47 AM
I just use large-size pins from the craft/fabric store.  Big safety pins. Diaper pins would be good, too, but they are hard to find these days!

Oh wow, Elizabeth, I was just looking at your website, what a great place you have!! I would love to have all of that space. Have you ever had trouble with horses kicking each other? My aunt had one of her borded horses shatter one of her horse's legs and had to have her put down. How do they deal when taken away from your place? Having been so attached and all?

Anyway... back on topic! Show me your new picures! I am dying to see :) Also, if you wouldn't mind posting measurements of the shelves and floors when you get the time, that would be awesome. I am the one who is going to make the liners for w1ngs0fate, and I have never seen the FF in person. :) I would be willing to give you a deal on some liners or hammocks for yourself for the trouble :)

Hmm, well I thought that was a good deal, Meave, especially since I would assume most people would have those measurements somewhere if they've ordered fleece in the past, unless they made them themselves hehe.

Well, horses do kick, but most problems b/t horses occur when they are stabled part of the time (when they are out 24/7 there is no "re-entry" period where the hierarchy must be re-established).  Additionally, most major injuries inflicted via kicking occur when horses are shod -- it's the difference b/t being hit w/ a bare fist and being hit w/ brass knuckles.  I am a barefoot trimmer and believe that all horses should be barefoot.  I board horses, but no horses w/ hind shoes are ever allowed on my property, period.

Horses are herd animals, so no, they don't love being separated.  But they are ridden separately and often travel to shows, clinics, etc.  They adjust.  We never take more than 2 at a time (having a 2-horse trailer!) so there are always at least 2 left home, and as long as they have each other they are fine.   :)

The cage is more full now. I got a chance last night (after taking these pictures, of course)....to make tons of fleece ropes, hang more toys & hammocks, ect. I love this cage and I would love to buy another one when I move into my house early(ish) next year  :).

Ohhh....the reason for one boy being on the top and one being on the bottom....is because we are doing intro's. Leo and Spar were both neutered about 4-5 weeks ago (I lost tract). This cage will be the home to Leo, Spar, and baby Ralphie once we are all intro'd...then home to any other ratties that may join us.

I (Actually, my mom sort of force changed my mind) changed my mind and I'm going with the FF. My mom said that FN modifications were more work than it was worth, and I don't think she would help or really want me to do it.  :'( Oh well. I like the Feisty Ferret and I only have three rats, so it's enough room. I'm pretty sure I won't have to modify it either. That would stink!
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!

You will be happy with the FF  ;D. You just need to modify it a little by adding in a solid floor (using tiles, chloroplast, plexi-glass, ect), covering the two floors with fleece, and getting some wire storage shelves to zip-tie up in the cage. The extra shelf space really is a must, my rats love hanging out on the extra shelf (you can see it in my pictures).

Updated cage pictures! It looks really "toy-less", but my rats don't show interest in toys. They love to roll around the balls and play with each other, more over toys.

Spartan, Ralphie, and the new dumbo guy's top half:

Leonidas' bottom half. Yes, he is alone...he absolutely refuses to get along with the 12 week old babies or Spartan, who is neutered. Maybe he would get along with a spayed female?:

Wonderrodent's snake works really well in the Feisty Ferret home. When we had our rats they loved it. We would hide treats in it for them. I may have pictures in my posts. Just do a search for Feisty Ferret homes. We really liked the FF. We only had two boys and it worked out great for us and them.

Do they make FFs with one level? I did a google search, but only seem to be able to find two level cages.

I doubt I'm getting a new cage anytime soon (especially since I'm ratless and not sure when that's changing- hopefully sometime in the *really* near future), but it doesn't hurt to look, right? I really like this cage, although I think it might be a little too wide to fit through my door. I could barely get the 695 through the door (we have a bookshelf in the hallway that blocks half of my door- I hate it).

Does anyone still have the directions for construction lying around that could scan it?

I checked the prevue website, but the layout that they have pulls the javasript link bar up WAY far away from the customer service image, and it's a hover so that's what triggers the javascript to pop up. As soon as I try and get over to the manuals it goes away ;;

so, if anyone could scan theirs in for me that would be amazing! Or, if it's my computer can someone can properly navigate the website to get me the link Id be eternally grateful.

I'd love to post Feisty Ferret cage pics..That is if I had one! Right now I'm (well, rather my rats are) stuck
with a little Martin's cage top on a aquarium.Ugh.You can't exactly decorate an aquarium. And if I put anything in the metal cage-top part, there won't be much room for them.

Where are you located? Check Craigslist for cages...you might see something much better than an aquarium with a topper...

i believe they only make 2-level cages, but you can close off the levels, so you could use one for rats and the other for storage or something :)

Why would you need to get it through the door? It will fit, anyway -- the cage is 20" wide.  But you assemble it, so it will enter your house in a box anyway! :)

Around that -- 21" maybe?  I haven't needed to move the cage at all -- I use fleece on the top floor and the shelves and just remove the fleece, babywipe well, and put on new fleece.  I left off the wire floor and put Carefresh in the tray--I take that out w/ a dustpan, clean the tray, and put in new Carefresh.  Nothing else gets messy!

New pictures of my cage  :).

The trio's top half:

Leonidas' bottom half: It's plain and boring, I know. He won't play with anything, hates braided fleece ropes, and won't accept the trio at all. I am going to look into adopting him a female baby in May/June when we get our house. I'll have Ralphie and Louie neutered by then, so no chance of babies, and that way if he won't accept her either, she can go in with the trio. We'll see. I feel sad for my poor boy now, though. I bet he would love the SP Exotics cage because of all the levels...

**Now for some cage rambling, lol**

I have decided that I really want an FN. I am debating whether or not to sell this cage (or donate it to a rescue), buy the FN for the trio, then buy a SP Exotics cage for Leonidas. OR....keep this cage for the trio and get Leonidas the SP Exotics cage. Then again, the FF is nice and buying the FN would just be using up money that I can put elsewhere.

I have a while to decide, as my fiance and I don't get a house until May/June and our bedroom right now would be even more cramped with an FN in it  :P.

But now I am really debating whether or not going to PetsMart this week to get Leo the SP Exotics cage. He would just love all the levels....hrrrm. I might as well, I am eventually wanting to buy it for him. I can then later decide on the FN or not.

Fakesalt, WHERE ARE YOUR PICTURES??? I've seriously never seen any!  :yelcutelaugh:

LOL sorry Rodent! Did you see the lameo pics of my boys a while back? If not, search "Cow" and click on the topic "Cow and Squid!!" to see the extremely lame pictures of Cow and Squid.
My FF cage is too lame to post anyway. I suck at sewing so they have like no hammocks except the one yellow one that came with it, and I have an igloo on the top level, a box on the bottom, a water bottle on the bottom level (I'm going to get another one tomorrow), two food dishes on each level, and a litter box on the bottom level.
Anywho, awesome cage undergunfire :) I've always wanted to hang ropes and stuff but then it seems overcrowded. Pictures look fine, but when I'm looking at it in person it just looks like a big mess.
Are the ropes for decoration or do the rats climb on them or something?

Thank you  ;D!

They do try to swing on the fleece ropes, but they don't walk across them or anything. I think they love them in the cage because it makes the cage more "cozier", rather than blank.

Is it possible for the FF to be separated into two different cages like can be done with the FN?  Also, is the top level a wire floor?  These are the things that concern me about purchasing a FF as opposed to a FN.  I love the fact that the FF has smaller bar spacing as I have small girls.  Any opinions?

I just added some new toys and rearranged after a huge cleaning - took the whole thing apart and dumped it in the bath. If I used liners I probably wouldn't have to scrub it down so much all the time but I haven't gotten around to sewing them yet.

Anyway I made a new climbing rope out of some socks, a treat tube, and I hung up a lemonade case for them to play in - that one they don't really seem to like. They have a ton of new toys coming soon anyway.

I'll try to get my liners sewn soon and post photos!

Thanks for putting our stuff back mom!

Liners for this cage is a MUST. Rats should not be allowed to run around on wires that wide...broken legs would be horrible. At least cover the cage floor with a towel or something, until liners are sewn  :).

The insides wire is not that large...the first rat cage I bought designed for rats is the same on the inside.

But now I feel guilty :) I'm going to sew them tonight I promise.

I just sold this cage and bought a SP Exotics cage, so I know personally that the wire floors are way too wide for rats to be walking on.

I'm glad you will be sewing liners tonight, though. They will love it!

I'm doing it! :-P

Yeah I was at the store today and almost got some patriotic fabric cause it was on sale, but I have a bunch of good fabric to use already so I refrained :)
I might not have enough to make matching ones but who cares lol. Not the rats!

I made a bunch, thanks for the encouragement! :)

I moved my top shelf to the first horizontal bar down, making the ramp less steep and more room for hammock above. Has anyone else tried this? I didn't think of it till this week but I like it better and the girls have an easier time. It would be awesome to get a third shelf and put it below and offset on the bottom, I am going to do some messing around with stuff later :)

I no longer have my FF, I traded up to the FN. Someone mentioned earlier on here that they are close in size and really the FN is SO much bigger. If you're like me and too lazy to figure out what all those measurements mean, here is a photo:

(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3195/2529623258_948ecc1cd7.jpg?v=0) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/2528804131_c045fef514.jpg?v=0)
(I had started cleaning out the FF so it's very bare looking, but I left their stash lol.)

Just wanted to share because I have heard a lot of other people who like me, thought they were the same size.

I liked my FF but ended up having too many problems with it in the end. My liners I made turned out very cool but the ones for the FN are so much easier to make too.

Everyone has such cute decorations, gave me some great ideas!

Definately the perfect size for me. The FN cage is just too big for my living room!  I only have 3 girls and 1 neutered boy so I think it is perfect for them. ;D

Julie, I got mine on ferret.com, and they have 6.99 flat rate shipping. But you'll probably get it faster if you wait and get it from the pet store Tuesday. Up to you, though. But yes, you will love this cage, it is the perfect size for me, too. The FN was too big for the space it needs to fit in, but the FF was just right, not to mention I'm much more comfortable with the bar spacing. Any way, good luck to you, and I want to see pics when you get yours and set it all up! ;D

Hello, I was thinkning of getting a FF, before they raise in price again, but I was curious what some major pros and cons of the cage were. And if I had the room and possiably the money, if I shoudl get a CN...but then again I only have 2 girls atm...and would never go above 4 rats...

That's my old FF  :D.

I just went to Walmart and got wire pantry shelves, they are sold in a 2-pack. You will just have to secure fleece down on the floor of the shelf because the bar spacing is very large. You cut cut a piece of vinyl tile, too.

Zip ties  :). They never chewed them off, either. Another thing you can use is a metal cookie cooling rack. I also bought this odd looking basket from a thrift store that I think was once a part to a deep fryer...it works awesome and it even matches the wire on the FN or FF.

Good God, this thread is old!  But I'll post my old FF since I never have before.  It was two of them with the center panels removed and joined together.  The top held 4 males and the bottom housed 3. I have since upgraged to a 3 level FN.

How easily did the center panels come out?  I had an FF for ferrets and now I cannot remember the construction at all   I was possibly maybe thinking of getting a double wide FF rather than another CN.  It would be around the same cost.

(and I swear I am not stalking all of your posts, you just happen to have cool ones!)
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: Wheeljack on June 05, 2009, 12:02:38 AM
The entire center panels came off very easily; they are only held on with screws.  I did feel it affected the stability of the middle floor so I ended up adding the center panels back on and cutting the sides off of their frame with wire cutters.  It was much more stable that way.

Now I have it back in use, it was easy enough to zip tie the sides back on.

I would go for the CN however, with the FF doors only opening one one side, the double-wide was a huge pain to clean and you're really limited to where you can use the shelves that come with it.
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: coliekumar on June 05, 2009, 12:08:21 AM
I have had both and I whole heartedly agree that the CN would be better (and I would connect it to my existing double wide, so it would be really cool!), I am just not 100% I will have enough space!  (depth wise) So I am trying to keep my options open  :)

I didn't know that the FF existed until this post came back up and now I'm seriously considering it! I have a couple questions for everyone else who has it though:

-If only one side opens, is it difficult to clean out the bottom pans if for some reason they need to be removed?

-Is it easy to take apart and put back together? I am living at home now but will be moving at the end of summer and was wondering if it would be easy enough to take it apart to put in my jeep and then put it back together again once I got to my new place.

-I see that it is smaller than a FN, thanks to whoever had the post with the comparison (very nice!). I've been doing some research and it seems that it comes as two levels, but that the price is cheaper than either a FN or CN...is that right? It seems like the CN is the most expensive, then the FN, and then the FF.

I think that's all for now. Any other input would be appreciated. I see on some of these posts that owners of the FF are upgrading to the FN or CN which makes me wonder why but I think that the FF size would be better in my small room.
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!

The bottom pan slides out  ;)

I have found the FF for $140 and I bought my CN for $240.  I bought my ferret nation new for $160 and you can find it used from $75 to $175.

This cage is ungodly aggravating to put together and once it's together, I would forget about ever taking it apart again.  The issue is it is held together with screws that have a wierd star shaped tip and you need the tool that comes with the cage to get the screws to work.  The shape of the screws makes them strip very easily, so that tool was useless on most of the screws after the first time I used it.  You could probably find philips head screws that are a similar size and that might resolve the issue with taking it apart; but that's a hassle.

You also need to leave the bottom grate in and it will have to be covered with something, so that plastic pan is useless.  The bottom floor is a wire grate with spacing just the right size for a rat to break a leg in, and the plastic pan slides under the grate.  I first tried to only use the plastic pan without installing the grate and at the slightest bump, it dislodged and spilled litter and ratties everywhere.

I *personally* wouldn't wish this cage on anyone and would either go with a CN or one of the larger martins if ease of cleaning and the ability to reassemble it is a priority.

Yay!, I am picking up a Fiesty Ferret cage tomorrow. This cage will be at work so the boys can come to work with me this summer. Sometimes the air quality is so bad during the summer and I have central air at work so just makes sense to bring them in with me. I did this all last summer with Mo and I do believe it helped prolong his life. I am looking forward to decorating this cage. I am obsessed! :yelcutelaugh:

I picked up the Fiesty Ferret from BluRat today. Gave it a good scrub and now Baby and Bravo are enjoying all this space. I did intent to take this cage to work, but until Coco learns to play well with others I will keep it at home and keep trying the intros and get Mr Coco neutered.  So here is the babies cage,

Well I have only had the Fiesty Ferret since yesterday, but I will try to answer your question. :BlueDumboSmileTongue: As you can see by the side-by-side picture the FN is way bigger and both doors open and they even come off completely. The FF is smaller, only one door opens and it comes with wire flooring and no pans like the FN does.  I actually like both cages, but the FN wins hands down. I bought the FF for a work cage so I can take the boys to work with me. A FN/CN would not fit in the space at work and I wouldn't need that big of a cage for them for just the time they would be at work with me.  When you compare cost, I got the FF used for $100, the FN new and after price matching and having an additional $30 taken off because I bought the floor model the total for the FN was $159.00.  For two or three ratties I think the FF is a great cage.

So, I ended up making liners for the shelves. The pee would pool in the middle of the shelf, pretty disgusting. :BlueDumboSmileTongue: The yellow one on the bottom is my prototype, the green one on top came out much better.  The Peek-A Boo Playhouse from Violet976 is on the bottom, the babies use the bottom level more as a play area so I thought the Playhouse would be perfect there.  The top level is for sleeping/eating.

I really like the blue and yellow with the starts and moons.  Do you think the FF would be good for 3 girls?

Thanks, that fabric I found at JoAnn's. I think the FF would be great for three girls. Even with only having one door that open's, I really do like this cage. I like the size. Although I love the FN it is a monster in size, and luckily I have the room for both right now.

Bravo and Baby's cage this week, the fleece on the shelves makes a huge difference. I did take some dirty cage pictures to post on another thread.  Maybe tomorrow.

How do you guys attach the liners? Do you cut them like mats or are they hooked on somehow :help:

The "floor" liners are attached with safety pins at the corners, the shelf liners have elastic underneath the shelf to hold it in place. Hope that helps.

Thought I'd post some recent pics after cleaning out this evil thing.  I wish I knew why their product development group thought having only one door open was a good idea

I currently have 3 spayed girls living in this cage because they can't be trusted to act like civilized folks in the FN with the boys.

I got my FF used off of CL for $100.  The other owner had rubber mats made to fit the wire floors, which was nice.  I am only attaching hardware cloth to the bottom because I don't think my females will be able to escape once they are fully grown. So, they only get half the cage for right now.

My wheel is just on a stand though, it would be possible to zip tie the stand to the top or side.  I'm not sure how it'd work with a wheel without a stand.

Thanks! I'm very happy with this cage!

Just out of curiosity, how does the size of the FF compare to a single level CN? How many rats will a FF hold? Thanks. :)

Just out of curiosity, how does the size of the FF compare to a single level CN? How many rats will a FF hold? Thanks. :)

You can look up the exact dimensions of both cages on www.ferret.com.  The FF supposedly holds 7 rats while the single level CN/FN holds 6.  I have a FN and FF and would strongly advise anyone to go with the FN/CN over the FF.  It's not as sturdy, is a pain to clean (compared to the FN/CN), the smaller shelves are not really large enough for an adult rat (these would be the shelf on the left in my top pic), requires the main levels be covered with something due to dangerous bar spacing, only has one door open which limits where you can hang things and is near impossible to disassemble/reassemble more than a few times unless you buy new screws to hold it together.

I am only using it because my girls are so freaking destructive, I don't care what they do to this cage;  I don't want them chewing up my FN.  Get the CN, you'll be much happier  ;)

My guys always hated the shelves that came with it it too.  The black ramp is from my FN, the white ones are from an old cage.  I have used the larger parrot ladders in the past and they worked out pretty well.

I'm really looking for something with closer 'rungs' since I had a big girl PTS with a broken hip once.  I'll never know for sure, but I always wonder if it wasn't from her getting caught in the parrot ladders I had throughout the cage.

Anyway, I thought the ones I saw in your cage might be worth looking at.  I have several custom ones I got from Martin's and will likely order more; just was hoping to find something local.

Oooh, looks like i'll be the first one posting here in a long long time!

Lets bring this thread back to life!

Anyway I've had this cage, but i just got my ratties yesterday and Their cage is somewhat bare but they seem to have taken to it (although they have been sleeping all day today, poor things made a long trip and they are POOPED)
I'm using old scrap rugs or rag rugs or whatever they're called. they are verrry cheap, like 90 cents a rug and i use two per floor. i havent secured them and so far they havent chewed them or pulled them up so so far so good. The house was a kitten litter pan that i cut a hole in. I made the ropes, and the black hammock, the yellow hammock came with the FF, and the pouch on the shelf i made (just because) and there's a little jingly cat toy in there somewhere. i'm not using the top right now because at the moment we dont have enough hardware cloth to cover the top.
anywhere here it is:
one of the ropes i made thats on the door

I do love this cage, the size is right, I have 5 girls in it. They are small girls so they fit well in it. The only down fall is that the doors do not both open. I love that part of my FN.

It is still kinda empty. going from one cage to two large cages it is taking me a while to build up a collection or make my own. and doubling in rat numbers :)

out of all the sleep things they have, their favorite is the tide bottle, there is actually 4 rats in there sleeping. All you can see is my 3 hooded rats though lol and it has lasted the longest. THey cannot break it.

I found the scarves at the dollar tree, so we are using then to fit the length of the cage( the green thing on the top of the cage going to the black hanging basket) they run across that all day. So I ran out and bought a few more for them.

I do agree with the shelves, I don't like them at all, they do not connect well and they are small. I would prefer to feed them messy foods on their shelve but 5 girls and a bowl cannot fit up there.

Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: kscanuck785 on October 31, 2010, 02:24:12 PM
we painted it.
My husband sandblasted some areas that had rust and then we used the new version of Rustoleum, the one with the primer in it.

we had high hopes for the cage but considering that amount of rust it had, We even had to cut the legs off, so we went the cheap route. Please note that the condition was fully disclosed by the previous owner and the cage was given to me :)

to be honest, I don't think it would stay nice very long, I already scratched it with the metal shower hooks :(

if I had to do it again, I'd probably pick a color as close as possible to the original one...oh well, we live and learn :)

with that said, I do like the cage a lot  :)

update: I am retiring the Feisty Ferret as a spare cage as of this week end, I got a great deal on CL on a Martin's New Englander :)

they are not the prettiest cage decor, but they get used more than anything in the cage. I like it because it is kinda green LOL. and it holds up really well with destructive rats. Mine wont chew on it at all. and you can fit a lot of ratties in there :)

This thread is very old haha. Well, here's my FF. It's home to only one boy right now (long story) and I'm soon attatching it to another, bigger cage, to make more of a mansion for my four rats and one ratlet once intros are finally over. I personally like this cage, but I've also never had a CN/FN. I got it for $50 dollars off CL

Top then Bottom

I've since redone the other cage, it now looks like this

Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!

I'm going to add a level at some point in the future. They make the Frisky Ferret which is the feisty ferret in single level form, I'm not sure if it has a door in the bottom though. The only glitch I can see right now is where to put the ramp where it won't take up the whole shelf
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: texasreb on January 25, 2011, 04:28:31 PM
Oh...the ramp.  I hadn't thought about that.  Umm... I'll have to think about a work around for that.  Maybe making a ladder or something?

Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: kscanuck785 on January 25, 2011, 04:33:24 PM
I bought cheap wood parrot ladders at walmart for maybe $3 each, and they work perfect!
I just turned the hooks sidways and squeezed them between the cage bars and the shelf, there is enough room, and voilą!!

She/I meant a ramp to connect an added level to the FF through the door in the top - the shelves are pretty small and a ramp coming down onto one would take up most of the shelf. Maybe make a long ramp out of hardware cloth that goes over the shelf and to the floor rather than to the shelf? That would probably work. You could use something else, but I always use hardware cloth because it's cheap, safe, and you can use it for practically anything. I've heard of rats breaking legs/hips on the bird ladders so it'd probably be safer to cover the backs with something so their legs can't slip through

I'll figure out something.  I have an acrylic bird ladder that my parrot hates, but now I'm hesitant to use it due to the possibility of injury.  How on earth do they hurt themselves on a wooden ladder anyway?

Slip/fall through the rungs. All you'd have to do is safety pin some fleece to the first and last rung on it, so that the flerce is on the back and they can't slip through

considering this cage, anyone else have it? The cage calculator says it's not deep enough..do you find it doesn't have enough depth for your kids?

I've got this cage and have my 4 girls in it, there is plenty of room for another rat and I think the depth is just fine. Honestly it's as deep as my Martins 695. I happen to like this cage a lot. It is really easy to clean and although just the one door opens, it is more than big enough to get in to clean and decorate.
I covered the 2nd level with a layer of coroplast, cut to fit. Then I made a liner for the 2nd level and 2 smaller levels. The bottom of my cage was assembled without the wire floor. I just put bedding in the bottom floor pan and slide it out to empty and clean.

I really like it, it's affordable with more climbing space then a single CN and I onoly have 3 boys and no intention on getting more... Hmm.. this may be my next cage!

Just make sure you order it from somewhere that offers free shipping. I know that the CN and FN's are bigger but in my opinion this cage is the next best thing. I actually like it much better than my Martins. The martins was too big abd bulky for me to lift and clean. I REALLY like the slide out bottom pan and since I have coroplast on my 2nd level it's a breeze to wipe down.

Just got this cage for $75 off of craigslist!  Here is my VERY temporary set-up, I'm still working out the best way to keep those bar floors covered before I give them both halves.  I'll be spending the next few hours fixing it up some more but thought I'd share since I am so thrilled with this cage.  I have two girls, and they're eight-weeks-old,  so this is extremely spacious for them.  It only came with one shelf that I have in the inaccessible bottom half for now, but like I said I'm going to finish fixing this up today.

I'd like to see how everyone decorated their Feisty Ferret cage; I am thinking about getting one to replace my RUUD cage. Thanks!

I finally got an FF cage! A few weeks ago somebody gave me a used FF cage without shelves. I sanded the rust spots and painted it and I found some shelves and ramps from an old Marchioro cage I had that fit perfectly. Here is the cage all decorated and home to my two naughty boys Ryatt and Ransom and I say naughty because they chewed their way out of two cages and were running all through my house amidst my six cats, and they even managed to chew the hole in the pan of a Martin's R695 cage. This FF cage is all metal so hopefully they can't chew their way out.

Top half is for eating and chillin

I was not sure at first if it could be done, but I ordered the parts anyway and tried it out.

By ordering the bottom front, back, 2 side panels, and the middle floor, it easily transforms into a 3 level FF cage. It might not be good for short people lol but i am 5'9 and reach it just fine. Still goes out the back door for a good hose bath too. It was only around 80.00 to do an add on level for this. Which isn't horrible considering how cheap you can find these cages for.

I was using a piece of coroplast but since I combined two FF cages side by side, I ordered a new base-pan from Prevue and cut a hole for the ramp door. The pans are $10.00 and depending on shipping.

where did you find the base pan for it? also, do your babbies chew it?
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!
Post by: hopefloats75 on October 26, 2011, 02:34:41 PM
None of my rats have chewed the pans. Girls lived in it first and now i have  a bunch of boys in it, from young age to old age and none have done it.

You have to go to prevue's website to order the parts, the base pan is 10.00 I know I just ordered 3. You fill out the sheet on there for replacement parts then the woman will email you. Or you can call them but I found it to be easier to email.

I put the pan in the cage, marked the bottom with a sharpie and used a dremel to cut the hole for the ramp.

two side by side connected for more room and one side with an add on. I will be putting another section so they are the same height maybe.

So noted, Wheeljack.... ;)

Just an aside, a Martin's 680 fits on top of these FF cages perfectly.  The FF cage already has a door in the roof, so no cutting or chopping.  All you need is a ramp leading into the new top section and Martin's made me one for around $10.00.

The 685, 695 and any of the Ferret cages with a base size of 30 x 18 fit also.
30 x 18 is a pretty standard size so there are a ton of options if you want to go higher with a FF.

It can, there is a little metal cover for the opening.  You do have to cover the floor grates due to dangerous bar spacing, so if you get something solid to cover it with that will also help block it (obviously it has to be something chewproof)

Wouldn't that soak up pee quickly ?

Neglected to mention that I put linoleum tiles across the top of it, and the pee stayed off the shelf completely. I know it's very ghetto and it definately was, LOL, but I had no money and needed an extra cage on the spot due to some rat-rat aggression issues. Didn't have time to plan for anything. 2 of my rats that had been in the same cage were suddenly attacking each other, which threw me into a panic, and I was there with a rat, probably crying or something, (I tend to get very emotional over my rats,) just looking around thinking, "What will fit in here as a floor right NOW??!"

So yeah, Im sure since yours is being planned ahead of time that you can find something much better, lol ;)

Uuuuh nope , actually xD I'm in a different just as difficult situation and I'm absolutely frantic to find a suitable cage. I've only got like $70 to spend and need something that will fit three full-grown year old boys and a 4 week old baby.   So I'm probably also going to end up with something super ghetto.  :yelcutelaugh:  ::)
** Just in case you were curious as to what that situation is ; I met a girl off of craigslist who had gotten feeder breeders for her cousins snake, didn't have the heart to do that and ended up with an unwanted litter. Sooooo she has been keeping them in a broken down piece of raisin cage in her unheated shed. All of the babies , except four, died and so did the mother. I couldn't in good heart let the babies stay out there freezing. Soooooo I am now taking in four REALLY grumpy boys ( the father , the uncle, the original breeder, and a baby )  and two girls. And since I only have girls I need an entire separate cage. AND the girl can only keep them for another two weeks! (( And it's getting chilly in my area.))

Since my boys absolutely refuse to get along I needed to get a cage that could be split in 2. I found a fantastic deal on a new Feisty Ferret, so here it is!

I was really impressed! I had looked through old posts on here to see if this was really the cage for me. The CN/FN are a bit too big since I rent and moving them looks like a pain. The FF looked good in the posts on here, but I didn't like the look of the plastic shelves with the holes in them or the wire ladders. Well, the design of the cage must have been updated from the one I looked at because when it arrived, the shelves are metal (without holes) and the ramps have a solid metal backing so rat feet can't slip through. Perfect! Plus, there is a trapdoor on the middle floor panel so I just had to close it to separate the two levels. I could not be happier. :) I'm going to miss my old cage, but this one has everything I liked about the old cage and more so I'm sure I'll be quite happy with it.

I had thought that too (Actually, as I was installing them I was thinking of ways to add traction-lol!). I watched for a while to make sure the rats were all getting the hang of it, and they all seem to be doing fine! Blaze is 2 1/2 years old and one of his roomies Kenny has a permanent head tilt, and they both took to it in stride! (Kenny is actually the butt shown on the shelf in the first photo: he was the first rat to race to the top shelf. ;))

I was dreading the plastic shelves. I had a plan to move the shelves from my old cage into this one. Glad I didn't have to go that route. :)

Hey guys, I was thinking of getting this cage... Has anyone thought of making wire mesh shelves for this? Similar to how they do with Martin's cages - just get a piece of wire mesh that's half the footprint of the cage (hamburger style, haha) and zip-tie it in place. I feel like that might be a pretty good way to solve the shelf woes. I know I won't be able to deal with the plastic of metal ones it come with. Thoughts?

I haven't posted for a while but I just happened to have a picture of my ff in its latest iteration that I thought I'd share!

I do wish I could get more shelves in there, but I have enough things to attach to the sides.  They don't use the ramp to get to the one real shelf in there, it's more to add hiding space underneath than anything.  My girls are serious climbers and jumpers, so lots of perches and ropes.  You can't see it in this picture but I have a perch and a basket connecting the two levels that works very well for them.

I use drawer liners as floors - easy to clean, but they do get chewed a bit here and there (as you can see on the bottom level).  Usually as long as I get the girls out every day they're not destructive, so I'm pretty lucky.

I just put this cage together tonight, what a pain in the behind it was!!!!  The shelves are a new design and the ladders aren't, so guess what...the ladder from the center does not reach the platform on the second level.  :(  I'm going out to get another ladder this weekend, until then, I have made a ramp out of hammocks that they can use to reach the second level shelf and get down to the bottom.  The cage isn't decorated completely yet, I got worn out and want to really make it nice this weekend.

Anyway...besides the pain of putting it together and the ramp issue....I LOVE THE CAGE!  The boys think it's pretty neat too!  I am using bathroom rugs for liners to cover the wire floors, I cut a hole in the top rug over the opening to go to the second level.

Did you put the panel with the middle cut out on the top and the one with the door in the middle? That's likely why the ramp isn't reaching. If you look up a few posts at accordingly's, you can see what I mean. The panel you're using in the middle goes on the top, with the little door. And the one with the side cut out goes in the middle. :]
Title: Re: Please post your Feisty Ferret cage pictures!

I thought that too, but the panel on the top is the only one with center holes to screw into the top sections of the cage....I think something got messed up.  By the time I realized it, I didn't want to take everything apart and put it back together again. The top panel door hole isn't cut to the side either...it is also in the same location towards the middle. I think I'm going to find something to make a new ramp instead of taking the cage apart to see if switching the pieces to see if it works.

This weeks cage, I think I kind of figured out where I want things in the cage.  I really really really love this cage!  I am so glad I got it.
:thumbsup2:  It's very easy to decorate and to clean. Bathroom floor mats cover the full levels perfectly. I just got the boys a Wodent wheel, I am excited for them to try it.

Is that yellow house one of those plastic/corn house things?  I've been looking at those.  I worry that they are so thin, but still made partly from plastic, that my rats would be really tempted to chew & eat it.  But they look so fun!!

It is one of those corn houses, my boys don't chew on it at all.  They love it though!  All three love to cuddle up inside.  I tried to put fleece scraps under it but they toss them right out.

I still love my FF cage.  I took some pictures of today's cleaning and decoration.  I found a playschool tree house at a flea market that I couldn't wait to try out! I Also found a cute police car Easter basket that I cut the handle off of...got it for 2.00 at Hobby Lobby.  It's a perfect bed!

Oh my gosh that car is ADORABLE!     I always look for those things when I'm around craft stores, but I'm never there to snag up the cute ones!  Love this cage.  Part of me misses my FN (which is pretty similar it looks like), but it was just so big.  Your ratties look absolutely spoiled!   :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

I liked this cage because it wasn't as big as the double FN, and fits perfectly in my crafting room.  It was a really good price too.

I hope no one minds if I bring this thread back from the dead  :wave2:

I just ordered the FF and it should be arriving on Tuesday. Soooo excited  :hyper: My dream cage is the CN double unit, but I don't have the space or the money for that right now. (I'm spending way too much on my rats as it is. Every time I leave the house they get some kind of new toy lol)
I've been sewing toys, beds, and hammocks all weekend to prepare for Tuesday.

Can anyone give me the dimensions of the shelves, please? :)

Congratulations on your FF!  This cage does not get the love it deserves.   The shelves on mine are metal and measure 7.5X20, I have seen some with different shelves and ramps.

This cage is so awesome, my boys love it and I love it.   Super easy to clean and decorate.

Thanks for the dimensions!

And yes, I am SO excited!! It took me about a month to decide which cage to upgrade to and this one is just the best choice for my budget and space. I've only come across a few people that don't like it. All in all, I think it'll be perfect for me and my boys. Can't wait to post pictures!  :hyper:

Pictures don't do this cage justice, wait until you see it in person!  The only thing I found that might be a negative is the wire flooring.  I use bathroom mats to cover the floors since my boys use a litter box.

I have that cage and I love it. I have used it as a single level cage, two story and I added a whole section and made a triple. it is an awesome cage and I would not get rid of mine for anything. I have also connect two side by side for a huge cage. There are many options for that cage that most people do not see. You can also order extra pans cut holes out for the ramp and put them in the top section of the cage to keep their feet off the wire floor. I did that to mine and it was very simple with a dremel.

Finally got everything set up!

Assembly and decorating took 5 hours. I know, pathetic. I put the whole cage together and realized I mixed up the pieces

I need to trim the liner on the first shelf. Completely forgot until pictures were taken.

I got them at Big Lots for 5.00 each, it was a good deal.  They wash up really nice too!

I didn't ask my husband about the color, I just did it since it was my room ;)

I mixed up the level pieces on my first assembly attempt.  I love your colors, it's so bright and cheery!

Thanks! I actually did a little rearranging and trimmed the liner on the top level so it looks even better now. :)

I know I already posted but, here's a picture that's a bit better.
I didn't have the bottom liner clipped in tight enough at the corners so of course they chewed it to bits ::) So I quickly made another out of an old bedsheet.

Next weekend I'm going to go crazy buying fabrics for liners, toys, and such. :hyper: I want to just make a whole bunch to have around. I also need to find a decent, yet affordable sewing machine...

I'm so excited to see a few people keeping their ratties in the FF.  :hyper:
We just got one off of CL (well, the lady had advertised it as an FN but that's obviously not what I got!) and painted it a nice blue color and our ferrets are currently living in it until we can get a FN for them. I'm really excited to upgrade the boys from their rabbit cage into the FF (thinking about getting a pair of girls too after we switch out the cages). <3

I'll probably be stalking this thread for decorating ideas now!

Do you guys have to cut the matts to make them fit or are they just the right size? I never thought to try that so I'm pretty excited to do this when I move it over from storage to the house

Just wanted to say that I found this cage for $118 with free shipping in the continental us here: http://www.futurepets.com/cgi-bin/search.exe?BP=1&RCAT=400.  The frisky ferret is only $75.. :shocked2:

I am considering getting the cage myself and segregating the top/bottom so I can get some males, but I like seeing the rats scale the cage without having to add chicken wire too so idk.

(I also don't work for the site.. just very cheap  ;D)

Just picked up some fosters for Mainely Rat Rescue today, my first rats since I had to have my darling Hot Dog put down just before Christmas '11.  Two girls and a neutered boy living in a Feisty Ferret.
