Post by: JTO_ on June 27, 2008, 10:56:52 AM
I was thinking we could make a thread of just Superpet Cages:

Well heres mine, it is a my first home with purple shelving, and green tubes and such.

BTW if someone already made a thread of this im sorry.

how it is now, from the...corner? idk

:C its so baree but i cant afford to buy them new hideyholes and stuff so they're stuck with boxes and paper bags until i can find time to make some tunnels and hammocks..

Shazza... maybe try hooking the hammocks onto the cage bars right underneath the shelves? Have the hammock peak out just a little bit further than the shelf so they can just hop right in.

I dunno... maybe?

i had thought about that and i'm going to try it as soon as i get back from vacation and i have time to mess with my hammock material

I love finding rat toys at goodwill!! So much cheaper than actual pet toys, and usually more fun.  :balloon: I have a similar Dora the Explorer "tree house" I found at goodwill.

I took out the green things, my girls hated them and they were flimsy anyway.
I'll be getting a FN in about 3 weeks or so, and I am counting down the days. It's such a pain to clean, and I just don't feel its big enough (specially once my 2 new girls come out of q-tine). I also hate that I can't hang stuff from under the shelves.

I don't mean to thread-jack by any means, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same issue with their Super Pet cage. I had initially purchased a large hooded rat, who had to be returned due to respiratory reasons. When I purchased him, I purchased a SuperPet My first home 3 level cage. I thought it would be perfect for him. It was, no issues with him escaping, etc. However, after returning him, I brought home my 2 boys I have now. Both were fairly young when I got them, less than 3 months old, and fairly small. (this was only a month ago, so while they have grown, they still have quite a bit of growing to do).  I initially had my cage all types of ghettofied with cardboard weaved in and out of the bars. Provided lots of fun for my boys, but looked horrible, didn't do much for their view and ventilation, and I had to worry about them getting smart and pulling the pieces down to escape. And they did escape, over and over and over again.  ::) So I decided to use hardware cloth, as I had seen mentioned on here before. I could not find it ANYWHERE. I tried Lowes, Home Depot, and all of the Taylor's Do-It Centers. I managed to find 2 rolls of replacement screen and decided that in a last ditch effort (before having to breakdown and buy another cage that I can not currently afford) to keep my ratties safe and secure, I would give it a shot. I managed to wrap my entire cage in it and zip tie it down with over 75 colorful zip ties (couldn't have it look but so tacky).  :yelcutelaugh: They can't escape except from one spot where the top door opens at the latch (so I currently have to keep a piece of cardboard with a book on top to prevent them from escaping until they get too big for that one spot). I don't have any sharp edges, and have it tucked far down enough that my guys can't slide out underneath. It does make it a little more of a job to attach hammocks and the like, but it definitely keeps them in. They seem to enjoy the view better too. Anyone else used this for their cage? I will definitely be posting pics soon of the cage and the boys to my gallery. Thanks for any info!  :thumbsup2:

That stinks that they can escape, I had momo in there for 4 months and after the fourth month she decided she would escape and run the entire house while wew were at a fourth of july party .  I know that Tractor Supply Co. has the mesh you are looking for.

Does anyone think that after a while, I might be able to take the mesh off the cage? I really really like the cage I have and how it looks. At least being able to take down the cardboard piece off the top will make me happy. I figure the mesh may be a nice thing in terms of safety precautions and in the far far future (I hope), when I end up with little guys again after my run with these guys, I won't have to re-wrap the entire cage  ::) ::). I just hope my little guys get big enough that they can't fit through the latch spot at the top. They seem to be growing every day and love their super pet cage!

I saw it on display at my local pet shop and it looks like a nice cage for 3 males, it was $89 there so the price at ferret.com sounds like a bargain.

Cool. The cage calculator says it can hold 4 rats, but I'm only getting 2 girls. So there would be plenty of room!

I had to dig for this thread  :P

Here's Maddie's "new" cage, a SuperPet (not sure what variety).  Hopefully she'll adjust to it... she's been in a FN for 2+ years of her life!  I'm working on making cute, custom-fit stuff for it and liners, but for tonight I just kind of threw it together.

I have a superpet too the ferret one with the three levels.  I was wondering, how do you guys get them to leave the fleece alone at the bottom?  Is there anyway to secure it?  I'm in the process of litter training my girls and I want to do the same with my boys but I know they won't leave the fleece alone.  My girls don't really care because they spend most of their time on my bed (about 15 hours) with access to their cage of course.  But I was wondering if anyone had tricks on how to keep the fleece down?

Here is our cage for patchouli and luna. These pics were taken 5 mins ago.

The shelves are out right now, they were taken out to be cleaned. I am not sure if we will put them back in. We were thinking about making our own shelves for the cage. I got some good ideas from fellow rat owners. There are other hanging items that are out right now, due to being cleaned too. I will take more pics, once everything is back in and put together. I just wanted to post these because I really do like my SPE cage.

This is Payton's Superpet cage. I finally switched to using cage pads at the bottom with a litter box rather than having all bedding in the bottom. Its alot more comfy for him and so far he hasn't pulled them up or anything so we shall see how that goes.  ::)

He has 1 envelope hammock on the shelf, 1 "easy pass" hammock hanging, and he has an 11" triangle hut on the ground along with his waffle house which is stuffed with fleece scraps!  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

I always love seeing peoples cute Geriatric cages. I dont have any rats over 6 months yet lol
Here is my Hamsters cage...its a superpet. But the people on the pocket pet forum never respond, and its not even half as active as this one so i'll post it.
Its going to be used for the Syrian Hamster I plan on adopting from a nearby rescue.

love the cage, Scubbs!

And Kikonthecobb, I know some people have had success with hamsters and hammocks/cuddle cups in the past, but I would just be careful.  If you have a chewer I would suggest removing the items if you notice some nibbling as the fabric can sometimes cause impacted pouches.  Some hamsters don't chew on fabric, though.

How many can fit comfortably in an SPE?
Title: Re: Post pics of your superpet cages!
Post by: megadocious on January 22, 2010, 05:57:58 PM
I currently have 3 girls in my SPE, and I would feel comfortable with up to 4 females. I wouldn't keep more than 2-3 males, however.

I have three chubby boys in a SPE and feel it's enough space for them--but wouldn't do anymore than three.

Here's a pic of it with my FN's for a size comparison:

Obviously I don't like this cage as much as my FN, but the shelves are SOOOO much easier to deal with than the ones on the FF (which snap on in a similar manner).

Here's Maddie's cage this time around  :)  I made a new shelf liner and floor liner out of recycled fleece that I was using to cover the pan in the FN when it was setup.

I know, that tube is ridiculous  :P  She loves it, though!

In the squished amount of space under the shelf there's a corner hidey from LOTR_Ratties that fits PERFECTLY.

And to the left, is her plastic house with fleece on top, since she likes to climb over there via the hammocks and lounge.

Lastly, here's the purdy girl herself, who will be 3 years old in only a few weeks!

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed she was a black hoodie.  She is gorgeous though-she doesn't even look old either!!
I love the cage-it's great as always.  The liners are just too cute!  You do such a good job of taking different hammock patterns and making them look like they belong together-I don't know how you do it.  It especially means a lot from me because I am obsessive about matching lol

Most of the time I don't even realize I'm matching things together!  Once I'm done, I'll step back and be like, "Well I'll be damned... apparently there's a theme!"  Of course, usually it's pink related.  :yelcutelaugh:

Maddie is such a pretty lady. She really doesn't look nearly 3, at all!
I have some hammocks very similar to that tube that I'd love to throw away, but a particular rat just wouldn't be able to function without them. :P

She is an absolutely gorgeous 3 year young rat, and what a fashionable home she has. I hope my ladies can age in style like that when they have to go to a geri cage!

Here is my Super Pet GIANT (47" long x 24" wide & tall) cage that I moved the rats into. They were in the top half of the double CN, but I moved them into this SP cage so I could set it on top of the rabbit's cages. l also did it so that I could have the corner where the double CN was, to put an over sized chair in there  :P. I'm trying to make my bunny room less "cagey" and more comfy!

Sookie, i see you have the Marchorio cage with the small bar spacing. It's on top of your green superpet cage.
I have been looking for that cage online, and in stores. By chance did you get in online? If you did could you tell me where, I can not find it anywhere.

I have this for my  bunny Syd hes tiny, 2 pounds.
I think i remember you posting that cage on the Rabbit forum, I really like the cage, and was wondering how good it would be for rats.
Looks great, maybe I'll evict Syd, and move him to a C&C cage, and put the ratties in the SP giant.

I made Maddie a whole new cage set yesterday  ;D  I love this fabric!

A new tube (I thinks it's high time I threw out the other...), shelf pad, snuggle sack, and a cage pad underneath.

I had to hang the cube kind of ingeniously, since it's quite a bit from the top of the cage and she also can't get around too well these days.  Definitely should have made the hole more toward the bottom, but I was in hammock making-mode and just made it like normal.

Aww I hate it when they ignore all our hard work! lol  I just adore the little buggy fabric!  I like how it's detailed, not just the typical cartoonish bugs (yet oddly I hate bugs in real life ??? )

I sympathize with having to throw away your old tube.  While it was in tatters, I know how much it kills me to throw away hammocks.  And what is that bowl?  Not to be crude but I don't think it could be what I think it looks like  :yelcutelaugh: !!

Here is my SuperPet cage, which is also the Exotics "My First Home". It's an alright cage, but much too overpriced next to the great FN and Martin cages out there (I did not know this at the time! This cage goes for $99). This cage houses my two girl ratties. Planning on eventually getting nicely made hammocks and cage pads, but for now it is old towels and washcloths :)

Yea, it's a rug and yes, wash it in the machine...and all the rest of their bedding. Throw a little vinegar in with the detergent. It works pretty well with the only problem being I have to wash a LOT and clean the cage a lot because of urine. I mix it up with using the rugs or just throwing in carefresh bedding on the bottom if I'm not going to have the time to change the rugs a lot. I like the rugs because we don't have the funds right now to buy enough carefresh to keep it changed as much as I like (sniffles).

Wow, you have a very unique cage set up.  Very nice.  I really like the unique type of igloo too.  It's also funny how the lab blocks ended up at the bottom of the "slide" lol

Oh, and that basketball thing looks alittle unsafe.
Title: Re: Post pics of your superpet cages!
Post by: AlwaysAmy on March 20, 2010, 11:11:36 PM
I always put their blocks at the bottom of the slide.  When I moved Winky into the cage that is where she would stash her dry goodies, so I just started putting them there to begin with to save us both the time & a little cage mess.  Since then all the ratties just leave them there.  I have pretty tidy girls.

The basketball looks unsafe?  May I ask why?  Argie loves it & carries it around in her mouth & plays with it.  I'd hate to take it from her.  :(

In the pic, it looks like the edges might be sharp enough for her to cut her paws on.  Perhaps it looks worse than it is?  I'd test it with my finger pushing hard against it.

AlwaysAmy, it looks great!
I may be going blink but i can't quite make out how you have the liners attached--are they tied to the cage bars?

btw:  If the basketball is sharp you can smooth the edge with a soldering iron or even just a nail heated with a cigarette lighter.

They are tied onto the bars.  I made them because I needed liners that also have the holes in them (for the tunnels that attach to the shelves of this cage).  I am still trying to figure out exactly how I want to make them.  I sewed these ribbons into the liners.  I also made some with the corners folded so I can thread ribbons through, thus I could replace them incase the ratties chew them.  I know you can do clips but these shelves are deep & have a lip & I don't know if they would work like I'd want them to.  I am also thinking of making some that have hammocks built into them & hang under the shelves.  We shall see.  I am still cooking things up in my head.

I have the Super Pet 'My First Home' cage.  I like it because I can move all the shelves around each time & remake the layout of the cage.  The rats really like all the slides & tunnels.

Thought I'd post a pic of my modified SPE.  I actually am no longer using the original shelves or ramps that came with it.  I built a full middle floor and found some hanging closet organizers that have the same footprint as the shelves.  I get bored with my cages very quickly so I may wind up putting the original shelves back in there at some point.

When I was still teaching last year, I had one of those rolling bins to take work/teacher's editions home with me to take care of.  Well, other teachers/students started noticing I was snatching up all the empty tissue boxes to take home to the rattums lol needless to say I needed up with GARBAGE bags FULL of empty TP rolls and tissue boxes hahaha  It took me several months of giving them like 3-5 boxes at a time to go through them all and not get the evil eye from hubby dearest for having garbage bags of "trash" and not throwing it out hehehe  :P

My old blind man Gollum is living in a SP Deluxe Care Home with the shelf taken out. He doesn't get around so well anymore, so he's just living in the one level, with plenty to do on the ground, and a couple of low hanging hammocks for him to easily get into. I don't have a decent picture unfortunately, but you guys have some great shots!!

The new cage liners are corduroy & cotton, for summer.  Most of the pieces are a mix of polkadots, stripes, plaids & this super cute dragon material I stumbled across on clearance.  It all goes together cause it's all bright & funky.  I love it.  I am so excited to use these new sets!

I found this hot pink milk carton box thing at the thrift store the other day, the little silver shelf was already in it.  I knew that it would be perfect for my cage (& for free range time, which I have been using it for for a couple weeks now, this is the first time in the cage). The ladies love it cause they can crawl through it from every angel & the hanging hammock makes for a fun cuddle spot.  I did have to take one of the shelves out of their cage for this week but I don't think they will mind!

This last week I made the girls several bunker hammocks while I was at work.  I've been crocheting them 'rat poofs' which are these colorful yarn baskets I make for them to snuggle in, that they love, love, love.  But I have enough poofs to get me through a couple months & I was looking for something else to do while I was at work, something to keep my hands busy (I work at a call center).  So I thought I would make them some bunkers out of yarn.  They are stretchy & huge & double as an extra shelf in the cage.  The girls seem to like them.  We will see what the boys think today when I do their cages.

Hi, I'm new to taking care of rats and I'm noticing that all the cages have covers over the floors/levels.  I know they can get bumblefoot, and I was wondering what a cheap, effective way was to cover the mesh floors (and have the material stay)?  Thank you.

Well, you can either poke holes in the corner of the fabric and run something through it to tie to the cage, or you can use binder clips (black things you get in office supply section.)  If your cage's floor is 1/2inch mesh, however, it runs no risk of your rats breaking/spraining legs in the mesh, and bumblefoot is actually not caused by walking on wire.  There is a genetic component (some rats are more succeptible to getting it), being overweight is a contributing factor, and living on dirty bacteria filled cages can be a factor.

Oh, I didn't know that!  Thank you.  I think I am going to put some material there anyway.  They seem to like the old t-shirt I put on the top shelf.   :P

My super pet this week!!  It is the superpet deluxe my first home multi-floor large.  I have two male neutered MRR fosters in there, Cupid and Apollo.  I finally got around to making some liners so as to not deal with the icky pee rivers :)  I loove this set, although it will probably look better in my CN...

Anyways, here it is.

Thanks :)  I honestly don't know where it is from, I bought the fabric from Petunia.  There is some of the fabric left, but not much, enough for two, three hammocks tops :(  Sorry.

I noticed that some of you have liners and some don't. Is that just a preference? Does it really make a difference either way? I actually don't like liners and wipe up everyday. I change there bedding in their hidey holes...etc every 3 days.

It's a preference thing.  :)  I make liners because my girls love to lay out on the shelves, this keeps them from laying in their own pee.  Also, cause I like the way it looks.   ::)

Does anyone have any ideas for a suspended floor? I want to use some kind of springy device that will let the suspended floor wobble and bounce a little when they jump and walk on it. The spring will need to have some kinda plastic or pipe tubing around it to protect the rattie feets. Think they might like it? We should try to make one!

Its funny you mention that. I bought a roll of non skid carpet padding. I plan on making some sort of level to see if they would like that. Im just a little nervous that they may fall through!! So Im going to put it over their hammocks so they land on something soft.

Yes it does. Also I have the biggest(?) superpet ,the one with 4 levels. It would be hard to fit 8 to 9 liners in every week. Unless someone knows how to make one that would go across. I would be using binder clips so it would be hard for the middle ledge. I hope Im making sense here!  :D

I scored another SP cage for super cheap & made my girls a 'double wide!'  hehe  I bought some vinyl coated wire & made a topper, took off the top 'doors' & made a walk over ledge for the cages.  They love it.  I am thinking of adding a second wheel because I have so many avid wheel runners.  But they are really enjoying the extra space!  :)

I was wondering how those knitted things do for you? My grandma, even though she wont handle my rats, wants to make things for them  :yelcutelaugh:  She wants to knit them some things though. Like tubes and hammocks. I was just worried though that they could get caught up in them, like their feet and legs and might get hurt. But have you ever had any problems? I really like the way they look  :)

Tell her (grandma) to use little knitting needles so the holes are as small as possible ;)
Title: Re: Post pics of your superpet cages!
Post by: AlwaysAmy on July 02, 2010, 03:42:47 PM
I make them hammocks, bunkers, 'rat poofs' & tubes out of yarn.  I usually use a small hook (cause my stuff is crocheted, not knitted) & two pieces of yarn to make them double thick.  I don't worry too much about them getting caught.  I've made them crocheted cage items for years & have never had a problem, ever.   I've also been making them & giving them to a friend of mine for her rats & she has never had a problem.

Please keep in mind that if you have chewers your grandma's creations won't survive in the cage long.  Once they start chewing the entire thing will likely come unraveled so they aren't as long lasting as the sewn versions of the items.  My girls chew at least one of the items into pieces each week. That's okay with me though cause I crochet at work (I work at a call center & it keeps my hands busy) so I do it as much for them as for me.  I buy yarn from thrift stores or snag bags of it off freecycle or craigslist for super cheap or free & use it to make them their stuff.  The more I make, the more I experiment & the more stuff I make for them out of yarn.

It works for me & my colony.  Let me know if you give it a try & what you think.  :)

I will have to try that soon! I use to crochet when I was younger, so maybe i'll have to give it a try. I really don't have chewers. The only thing they really like chewing is there cuddle pouches for some reason??? lol But that is it...so hopefully they wont chew these! But i'll post some pictures when we get some done and let you know also, THANKS!

Now about big is that? Gee I think you have the biggest and baddest SP cage there is! :shocked2: I will promise never complain about liners again. Oh do you know the secret? If you take one side of the cage(D) you can actually make it into a nice open door! I use extra clips and zip ties. Im trying to figure out how to do it on the bottom .But with the high sides and the way it sits in there you really cant but Im always trying.
On another topic I really do love your creativity, I crochet and may start making a few things. WHERE DO YOU GET PATTERNS FOR THAT?
Realized after I posted this that you have the 3 level I have the four level so I dont know if its put together the same. The 4 level come with all part seperate is it the same for the 3 level?

I recently bought my girls a Super Pet Large cage. I got sick of them peeing out the sides of the top of my Martins so they got a single level. They really aren't that active (besides running on the wheel) so they are fine in this cage. I sprinkled some pink carefresh to make it look a little nicer in there  . The little paper ad in there came with the cage and they stole it. Also, yes, their wheel did get dirty that fast. I took these pictures only 5 minutes after putting them in there. The green box WAS their litter box they never really used but it makes a great food bowl for them! They don't have any hammocks because I ran out of material and they destroyed their last set. So they will be getting some things to climb on once I get some more material.

It is 30x18x16.  It fits two rats at 2.5 cubic feet per rat.  It does need hammocks and baskets to use the available cage space, but the poster said he/she is working on that so it is fine.

I have that cage at my parent's house for visits. I have housed 2-3 in it and it has been fine, especially with hammocks and shelves. The pictures are making it look a little smaller than it is, I think. I had three in it when I was in Europe for a month because the larger cage wouldn't fit at my pet sitters place. There is climbing space and the footprint is good. A larger cage may be ideal for three but this one certainly works.

I moved my females back into their Martin's. Added some more litter boxes in hopes that they start using them and stop peeing out the sides. Since I did that I moved my lone male rat Dude into the Large Super Pet. Nothing fancy, he doesn't really like toys and doesn't do anything but chew up boxes. I've ordered a replacement shelf from the Super Pet website that will fit this cage so it should be coming next week. Then next on my list is an igloo or something of the sort for him. So he has a permanent sleepy hole and a sleepy hole he can destroy.

The cage
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/riku24me/IMGP0622.jpg)

And the happy rat.

I'm seriously considering buying a CN for my rats. I just have to find some room to put a CN. For some unknown reason ALL (except Dude) of my rats have suddenly decided to try their hardest to destroy their cages. So I'm thinking of moving them into a semi-indestructible CN.

My Super Pet My First Home Large:

Inside holds: Elliot, somewhere between 12 and 18 months, a dollarama basket, wood chew stick, two hammocks I made [flat and cube], black tee pvc pipe, homemade hide box, bird toy, dollarama pylon, his food dish, water dish, and water bottle.

Enjoy. I think I've done a nice job to a cage that has no levels at all.

P.S.-He is OBSESSED with the cube and the basket.

Im really starting to hate my cage :(. I love the size but its become a reaaallllllyyy long chore to clean. I think its because I have the levels all over the place. I have the monster one. The one thats taller than me. 5'4 Do you think if I make less levels (putting it to three across instead of 2 here and 1 there  and use liners it would make it easier? Any other suggestions besides getting a new one. Hope Im making sense here.....I was exausted coming home late last night but manged to clean and let the monsters out for a bit.

I absolutley LOVE all of the cage pictures on here! I also have a super pet 3 level cage for my 2 males. Ive noticed a lot of people have numerous hammocks and cloth in the cages. I used to put 2 hammocks in my cage, but i always had an issue with the smell. I swear my rats would only urinate on the hammocks! So my question is, how many times a week does everyone clean their cages? Do you wash the cloth items evey time? Just curious, thanks!

I have 3 males and I change their hammocks everyother day. Males just smell more and you need  to harness it!!!! I wipe down every day with babywipes. Once a week there baskets and toys get soaked also their bricks(for pee and holding down a litter pan). Sometimes you need to go out of the box and find what works for you.

The SP boys cages this week.  8 boys, 4 in each cage, plus their on top & in between cage play area.  The mesh wire thing on the top of the cages can be turned over & make one big ultra cage.  But for now (while we are still doing intros) it is just a bridge of sorts for the up top play area.

I really dont want to lose this post. So I have a question.  I know it can be a pain to clean these cages with small doors and such...so my question what did you to modify (or not) to make it easier. I did some modifying on mine and moved ledges around to make it easier to wipe down or pull liners of...etc. So what did you do?

I haven't really modded my cages.  I made a topper to bring two cages together but I just removed the top doors to do that.  Not hard.

I don't mind the small doors.  That's okay with me.

I have been thinking of making 'permanent' shelves for my super pet cages & taking out the plastic shelves.  This is mostly because taking the shelves out every week & resetting the cages & reclipping the liners back on is pretty time consuming.  Plus, the cages are so tall that I think I would like to put in a couple more large floor space levels.  I am still working out how I am going to do it.  Every time I take the cages apart I am mentally remaking them.  I will probably only do one cage & see how it works.  Probably my fat man rats first to see how the 'shelf' holds up & figure out a way to reinforce them.

It's either that or start seriously watching CL for a ferret nation cage & sell off my super pet cages.  That's a pipe dream though.  haha  Plus, I don't really NEED new cages.  I like to modify & remake things so I think just adding a permanent shelf will work better for me.   ;D

I hear you Amy. I'm always remaking their cage too.  I think they like when we do that. But leave their hammies alone!!! I tried to make 2 big doors from the side and right now its a dream to clean. The bottom I made easier by putting no fabric but toys that are wipeable(plastic).

This is the picture where you can actually see the topper I made in action.  The other picture is of it flipped upside down (so it's like a big bowl/shelf) & laid on top of the cages to give them a big free range play area / topper to their cages.  Now the boys are in the two cages, the girls are all in one again.

I shoved the cages together, took off the top doors & used shower curtain rings to secure it down.  My girls loved it.  I made sure I put their food on one side of the cage & their 'dig box' (where they stash their food) on the other side.  It really helped my girls get some exercise running from one side up & then down to the other.   :yelcutelaugh:  Plus it was cute to watch them do twice as much funny jungle gym crazy stuff like they do.

How did you make big doors?

What do you think I could use for a big shelf?  The stuff I made the topper out of is probably going to be too flimsy.  I know a lot of people customize their cages.  I am probably going to spend some time digging through the threads here for ideas.

I was trying to think of a way you could make a shelf there but the only thing that comes to mind is a llooonnggg hammock which you could clip on the ends, it would leave space for them to get thru to the other shelves. I hope I'm making sense here. LOL. Or making holes on ...err rats I forget they will make their own holes, so they will save you work there!! LOL
I have the biggie(not the kingdom but the next size down) the one thats 6 ft high and 32 inchs wide and 20 inchs in depth. It's really 2 cages in one. What I did was to take the side panel (depth side)and zip tied it like crazy to make a huge door for cleaning...lifesaver I'm telling you. I also use giant binders to strengthen it (and closing it). If I could do that on the bottom I would be heaven but I can't cause as you know it sits in the base.

I haven't posted my cage in a while so I thought I'd update since this Hopefully will be the last time I need to clean the SP cages! (I may be getting a FN from someone on CL, fingers crossed!  :hyper:)

All the rattie things:

Carl and Toby's SPE:

Berkley's half of the Ferret Care Home, the bottom I'm using for storage until everyone decides to cooperate with intros:

I know it seems more logical to put the pair in the bigger cage but Berkley will use every inch of the space he has. Carl and Toby will use one hidey and their cube, that's all. Plus Carl is starting with the HED so I figured only giving him the two levels would be better since he absolutely refuses to use ramps.

I just got mine today! $20 from craigslist, and it even has the shelves, although the tubes/ramps are not included since he said they broke when he used it. We are going to put more stuff in it, I bought things for hammocks today, just haven't had time to make them yet. The things I like is the size, it seems pretty stable, my rats don't act like they can get through the wire spacing, and it's deep pan. Cons so far is its doors don't latch securely enough for my liking which may be due to it's age, and the shelves are not super sturdy. Fleece was cut into 24" squares and wrapped sewn to make a tube, then I just slipped them over the shelves, this works wonderfully. In the bottom I have bedding, not a liner.

I am going to reinforce the shelves by scewing OSB plywood to the bottom of them, and this also allows me to embed hooks into them to hang things

Sorry for picture quality, my cellphone isn't that great.

I have a Superpet cage and you all are giving me some good ideas! Right now I don't have much by way of "stuff" in our cage though they DO have a 4th shelf (we have the black-based 3 level-I think its the large for exotics, or something like that, I have seen several in this thread, lol). It houses our 3 boys comfortably I just HATE cleaning it! Like others have mentioned, it's the shelves that are a pain to deal with. I swear, getting them in and out and then trying to remember the best way to put them so that the rats have good play/sleep areas but at least now I have this thread to reference! Also, I notice a lot of you don't use bedding in the bottom but rather material (fleece) how do you keep your rats from moving it around? I see on the shelves people are using clips which I totally need to buy but the bottom confuses me, lol.

Okay, my apologies for posting again, but I can't modify and wanted to show it decorated. I made some hammocks, only have two in there right now. The wheel is a little odd placed, but they can get on and off easily.

Contents:
2 rats
3 shelves
a double decker hammock
corner hammock
2 braided fleece ropes
comfort wheel
stuffed llama
monster truck toy
bird bed
2 food bowls
2 water bottles
three baskets
black bendy pipe
chew kebob
and on of those things that hang on the clothesline that holds clothespins :)

I use fleece in my SPE. (Are the levels blue? The SPE has 3 blue levels and two doors. Here's a link to it:click! (http://bestpriceshopperguide.com/images/super-pet-my-first-home-exotics.jpg) ) I like cleaning the SPE much more since I started keeping the shelves in all the time. I have 2 shelves side by side to make 2/3 of a level and cover that with a towel or wash cloth then fleece (or a pillow case). I use binder clips to keep it in place. This way when I clean the cage all I have to do is fold up the pillow case and dump it outside. If any crumbs got loose I vacuum them up real quick. Usually there's no problem with the urine soaking through, but just to be safe I wipe it down with a baby wipe. This way I only have to take the levels out when I do a deep clean about every two or three months. For the pan I either lay a beach towel down or a towel then pillow case or bed sheet down and put something heavy in each corner. I used to put a towel down then a fleece blanket. This will work if your rats try to pull it up. I put the whole blanket unfolded over the pan, overlapping and falling out of the sides and set the cage on top. This way they can't pull it up. Toby likes to chew holes in the fleece and go underneath the blanket, now though.

Cleaning day! Got the new sewing machine and decided what the heck, lets make something. Found a old bathrobe (pink) at the thrift and bought the towel (liners) at walmart for $3. PERFECT fit. More fabric coming in the male, so hopefully I can do cage changes more often starting soon :D Also, I bought a 100 ct box of christmas light hangers. Let me say, they work for hanging hammocks. I can hang off of the shelves, walls or top. Only $1 for the box. Gonna stock up :D The double bunk's bottom is a too big, but Penello still likes it.

Okay, so starting from the bottom up there is a black tube, basket, chew block kebob, fleece rope, a little sack hanging on the wall, a flat hammock with a pocket on it (made easy because it's a bathrobe), a piece of fabric hung on the wall with a pocket on it to allow easy climbing, another fleece rope, a tube on the wall, food bowl, tennis ball hanging on rope, double bunk, fleece rope, and waterbottle :D

This thread is always dead because most people on these forums don't like the SP cages so there aren't many of us using them.  I stopped posting mine all the time because I felt like I was the only one who cared for awhile.  haha  I like your set ups.  :)

I have the same SP cages you have though recently I replaced all the plastic shelves with wire shelves that I permanently attached.  See this thread if you wanna see the new shelves - http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat/topic,4079178.msg4823858/,#msg4823858  I love the cages even more now cause they are a lot easier to clean.  I'm going to be doing cage cleaning today so I will try to get pictures of the girls new set up.  :)

Anyhoo, nice cages.  I'll try to remember to post some cage pictures so you aren't too lonely in here.   ;)

Me too smesyna. I get so many ideas and can figure out what kind of fabrics look good together. Maybe it's because I have only had a few cage changes, but I can't get off these cage threads

And the way I'm planning on fixing the shelves is Screwing plywood onto them, that way I can screw in hooks to hang from and they don't bend easily. I don't have problems getting them off, they just have a slight sag if the rats sit in the middle of them and i dont like it.

here's my latest cage, SP for chinchilla, but I think the cages that same size are all the same pretty much, other than what they put in the "first home kit" to either fit ferrets, chins, etc... like this one has the wood ledge in it.
it's 30x18x29

the reason for changing cage?
the red feisty ferret is really a good cage and a nice size but without pans, It got a little too messy for the office and required too many "spot cleaning". It will be back home as a spare cage
I also wanted something that I could simply pick up, put in my Jeep and bring them home if I wanted...so the Feisty ferret did not fit the bill for that ...LOL

so the boys are now in this super pet cage, this is my 1st super pet and I REALLY like it!
it was super super easy to put together and I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the doors, they are big enough to fit everything that is in the cage right now!

I think it would be really neat to hook up 2 of these cages via a tunnel !!

it's a breeze to clean and as far as the pee river, I'm drilling small holes along the groove to allow pee to fall thru so that should solve this problem :)

So I finally took a photo of Watson's (I keep calling him Waddleson...) cage with his new tubes. It's a work in progress for sure, but I'm not the type of person who likes "things" everywhere, so I have a feeling my rats' cages will reflect that too, haha. But I do intend to get him something else to make use of that space under the higher shelf. I might hunt around for one or two more actual shelves, too. I like how some of you have put two near one another to make a whole new shelf.

He REALLY likes his bird perches - I think they're keeping the ol' man spry, he hops about them and acts like a monkey  :thumbsup2: I also moved his cage next to the girl's cage so he can stare forlornly all day at them.

I actually have 4 of them now...LOL
GREAT job, I might have to try those bird perches/ropes, see if my crew likes them.

That's cool! My girls are tiny things, but I'm contemplating doing the SPE cage instead of their Martin's (it's hard to clean). Are you the one that connected them with those (I think they were grey) connectors? I saw that photo somewhere (too lazy to search around again...) and thought they looked awesome  :thumbsup2:

I wish more people would post on here :( I really love my Super Pet cage, I'm honestly surprised more people don't love them. Removing the shelves to clean (or just wiping them down) is SO much easier than scrubbing out the Martin's cages in my opinion. My Watson rarely pees on the shelves anyway, so that's really nice. I really want to get Watson a bigger cage but am having trouble deciding on which to get him.

Anyway, his clean cage for this week.  :thumbsup2: The ol' man loooves his wheel! He takes a jog on it every night. I didn't think he would, being both older and a boy. He's friendly but hard to hold, he tends to back up when you try to pick him up and/or hold him. I'm trying to get him used to it but he's having none of it.

For every one with the extra large sp cages that I think are made for rabbits, how do you like them? I like that there is more length than height, because it would fit a bit better in my dorm, and also I have a jumper and her very uncoordinated sister who I always think are going to hurt themselves jumping from the top of the rat manor. I'm thinking of getting one and putting in a level on each side with baskets then lots of hammocks.
How many females do they seem like they would comfortably hold with shelves and hammocks added in? I'm having trouble seeing the size in my head, and one calculator says 3 while another says 7. Also, is it one that would probably need to be wrapped for some kind of small girls?

I use the Super pet Giant for my 7 boys, I like it for the fact that is super easy to clean. BUT it cant fit many hammocsk because they can only be hung from the top.
it is bulky, and one several occasions i have had a rat fall from the top.

If you have tiny girls it would need to be covered which in opinion is NOT worth it

I love this cage! (for now)

I have two very young small females named Maddie and Lucy! (I just posted a picture of them under their thread called Maddie and Lucy.. they are laying in the basket in the picture). The basket and the 12 spinner are new as of Thursday's cleaning. I intend to put a hammock in the top right corner if/when I can find one a little smaller than the one I had in it. I am off on Thursdays and I just love using it as cage cleaning day. The girls love checking out the changes I make each week.

So I recently got 2 superpet cages for great prices. One is the my first home for exotics and the other is this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B0002DJ29A/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0

So far I really like them. I don't know why so many people knock these cages. They both have plenty of space and I don't mind the plastic shelves at all. I just use baby wips to give them a wash every day or two. I also have a Martins 695 and Feisty Ferret. I'm going to take pictures of the 2 SP cages this weekend and post here.

It's been a while! But here is Watson's cage. I ordered two extra shelves for him. He seems to like 'em :D Sorry for the glare, I moved his cage in front of a mirror because I see him more often there than where his cage used to be.

Yeah, I actually bought a shelf for a SP cage that doesn't even come with any by looking at another cage with the same length and width. ;)

I agree, Martin's are def rated too high with all that cleaning that's needed to control smell :o  haha

Just wipe once a day when you visit and take the shelves out to clean. Top off the base.. (which is bothersome for some I've heard) but seriously? Once a week dump and wipe And all is clean? Yay! I'd love to go to a SP exotic from our DCN because the damn thing is so huge. Its in my bedroom and I love these rats so much.. but yeah it's time consuming.. you've noticed, right?  With five, I've heard SPE would be too small yet. but I would have a better grip on cleaning needs weekly.

A couple SP's are great to have around for travel cages.

I had that 24*24" SP home cage for my 2-3 females and loved it (besides the hard to place hamocks) before they were ready for FN bar spacing.

You know, I love everyone's cage setups here!  I've pretty much decided on getting an SPE for my future ratties, even though I know that opinions are varied here here on the forum as a whole   :)

I think that it will suit my needs perfectly, and hopefully in the future I can save and upgrade if needed.  The biggest complaint that I keep running into is that ratties chew out of the base  :shocked2: However, looking at everyone's SPs here - hardly any looked chewed on!!

I'll be posting a pic when it arrives!

I still have this cage, but since I have no ratties currently it's empty (plus, I'd use my FN before this cage, though it's a great one!).  This is a SuperPet My First Home Giant, and I honestly can't remember why I bought this cage!  But, I figure it'll come in handy some day, especially if I get a rabbit or guinea pig or miniature horse, since the cage is seriously massive.  It is 46.5L x 24 W x 24 H, with an 8" deep base.  Here it is when it was Fyn and Encephalon's abode...

For a size comparison - here's my boy, Squee, in the cage when I first put it together:

The middle part. This is my makeshift "shelf". It's basically a "hammock" made out of a bandana.  ;D

My SP cage is modified now but it's still basically the SP.  Thought I would revive this thread a bit & post some pictures.

Thanks!  I don't do grommets or button holes.  I just always found them to be frustrating (button holes) & an added expense (grommets).  I just fold the edges & slip the hoops through.  Works the same, just an added minute during the sewing process.  Plus, I find my rats are less likely to chew through the thicker corners.

I don't think anyone has ever noticed them before.  Good eye!

What size/kind of elbows are you guys using to attach to the hole in the platform of your My First Home for Exotics cages? That's what I'm planning to do when I get mine, but I'm not sure what kind to get.

Lord Rio's retirement cage!  When Walter, Perry, and Kramer are out playing in the playpen, I will leave his door open and he will sometimes crawl down into the Critter Nation, which his cage is sitting on top of.  I think he misses it.   :(  But he also does not seem to mind the SuperPet cage, and maybe just maybe introductions will start going better and he will be in the Critter Nation once again with the three new guys.

Finally got my parts in from Super-Pet...got this cage on Craigslist for 10.00 without ramps or levels.  I love the Ferrettrail tunnel...I may have to get another.  It's not the best photo...but I'm so happy that the cage is functional.  The levels were a pain to get in, but for now it works!

Your cage looks great :) I'm glad you like the ferrettrail tunnel idea gullideth! My rats love it. It's easily their favorite toy in or out of the cage because it constantly changes. I'd get more if they were cheaper...

(also as a side note because I just figured this out: if your rats get old and you feel uncomfortable with them climbing up so high, or if you want to use it as a travel cage if you upgrade your main cage, you can easily convert this into a smaller one by taking off the bottom section of the cage wires. It makes a little cube cage and you can always put it back together)

Just did my first total remodel of this cage. The boys seemed pretty happy with it.

I put the two shelves side by side to create a bigger second floor. That left a little more empty space downstairs, but Oscuro likes to climb the walls anyway. I do plan to order more shelves from Super Pet, including a longer one (or two) from a larger cage so I can add levels running the opposite direction.

The lower floor. It doesn't really show up in photos, but I intentionally left an opening where the two towels overlap so Luz could tunnel under there. I've given up trying to stop him, so hopefully this will keep him from having to chew a hole and I can make the towels last longer.

And the top floor. The food dish is behind the house which I've decided I don't like much. I can't see how much food is left very easily, so that will get changed in the next revision.

I got my girls a new wheel....I'm not sure which one is better.  Their Silent Spinner cracked on the plastic.  Their new wheel is a SP Comfort wheel.  It has already come off the stand....and attaching it to the cage makes it wobbly.  I think I will go back to the old once I find another one.

Here is their setup currently :D

Super pet cages must not be that popular   but anyway, I wanted to share mine. It's modded pretty heavily; I've used coated hardware cloth to create a whole level, and am using a wire basket turned upside down as the ramp between levels. Nice thing about this is I can raise the basket and completely separate the levels if I need to.

My cage isn't color coordinated or fancy, but I still wanted to share.

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/Zyathlith/image-3.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/Zyathlith/media/image-3.jpg.html)
The bottom part of the cage. The box has paper shreds for the rattums to dig and hide and play in. In the corner is a wire shelf I found at dollar tree. I also have added a plastic box with fleece scraps.

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/Zyathlith/image.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/Zyathlith/media/image.jpg.html)

Top level. The grey fleece is there for them to climb on, along with three dog rope toys. Has a littler box, and I have some paper shreds on top of hone cage for them to pull down if they want to.
