Title: Odoban love
Post by: weadea on May 18, 2010, 04:35:35 PM
So one of my cages is the dreaded non-powder coated cages. You know the smell isnít really as bad as itís sometimes made out to be.  But itís definitely there if you stand next to it and sniff the metal.  With regular cleaning itís actually not so bad.

Iíd consider powercoating the cage but havenít gotten quotes lower than $240 and didnít want the hassle of spray painting and having to get new temporary cages for 16 rats.  (It was a $40 craigslist find steal Ė a 60ĒH x 36ĒW x 30ĒD Martins PDF450.  Three full floors and one shelf.)

But anyway, on to the Odoban.  I swore it was on every other post as I was catching up on the threads so I grabbed some at Home Depot over the weekend.   Now I can stand next to the cage and sniff and not smell anything.  Not-so-bad smell turned into non-existant smell. Yep, the stuff is crazy.

McCauley recommended it right?

I've yet to try it, my cages never smell that bad, usually if it does its just time to change the liners and litter box.

From what I have deducted, McCauley LIVES by it.  haha

I'm actually waiting for her to reply *looks at watch*

Hmm.
Anyways, does it have a particular scent?

I can't believe that this has been up for a whole 3.5 hours and she hasn't seen it. I'll bet, wherever she is, that he O-Ban senses are tingling.  :yelcutelaugh:

It does have a scent but I'm not sure how to describe it. It kind of reminded me of this Aveeno oatmeal bath stuff. The neighbor came by while I was cleaning the cage and thought it smelled good.  My boyfriend who hates all scents said it didn't smell bad but made his eyes water.  His eyes stopped watering after I was done actively using it.

It is kinda scary with the eyes though.  I think one of the label warnings said it can cause irreversable eye damage.  I put some saftey glasses on because I was using a scrub brush and I'm a clutz and get stuff everywhere no matter what I'm doing.

sooooorrry!!! i do go out sometimes!! hahaha

yes-- ode to odoban what a wonderful thing you are!!

there WAS a list on their site of everything it did indeed kill, and i know distemper, parvo, bird flu, swine flu, HIV, herpes simplex and lots of fun other stuff was on the list. i literally have no URIs in my ratties which is awesome (i give credit to my breeder on this one too-- but i think part of it is odoban kills all the crap haha) and literally there is NO smell on the cages. you could eat off those things! =)

oh and it smells like "eucalyptus" which is really just a nice light clean smell.

gotta love the odoban!!

:wave2: Question! Is there another place you can buy it besides Sam's Club? I found mine in the pet section of a regular Walmart, but they only had the biodegradable non-toxic wipes (which I use for daily pee puddles) and the hard surface cleaner in the magenta spray bottle (for full cleanings). Are the non pet products in another part of the store? I was looking in the cleaner section but couldn't find it. Also, in case my future Walmart doesn't have those few pet products, is there another place I can purchase Odoban?

So far, I really like the product! the only smell that occurs in the cage is from the pee-soaked hammies  :yelcutelaugh:

Of course, we don't have a Sam's club OR a Home Depot. Just a Lowes. I wonder if i can get it there....otherwise I'll have to stalk walmart. I hate living in the UP sometimes. I can't imagine what it'd be like living anywhere outside of Marquette :worry:

I will definitely have to stop at the Home Depot before I go back to college!  My college is in a rinky dink town that doesn't have ANYTHING, so I stock up before I leave.  McCauley is going to make us all into believers.  haha

So since this kills all sorts of things... Would it hurt insects? I read that hermit crabs are so closely related to insects that insecticides can kill them... so I worry about everything now... :p My family was getting this dust sorta stuff you spread around the edges of your walls that like cuts insects up internally and kills them. (we have ants) Totally don't want that around them.. But would this be safe?

Like seriously, Mccauley, do they pay you for this? lol

How is the product in comparison to bleach? I was interested more when it says kills parvo and such. We use bleach at the shelter, but if the product is cheap enough maybe I can convince our director to pick up a few bottles.
Title: Re: Odoban love
Post by: mccauleywent73005 on May 19, 2010, 03:47:21 PM
odoban is defiantly more expensive than bleach. we used odoban in the hospital, but the clinics are too cheap, so they use bleach. so i don't know if it would work in a shelter type setting. does bleach not kill parvo? i know bleach kills HIV.

It does. But we have one worker who keeps adding all sorts of smelly chemicals to our bottles, even our no-no squirt bottle which was meant only for water to get after the dogs if needed. I sniffed everything out and there was like, Spik and Span, I think even a PineSol, Frebreeze, ect. Our director thinks it's breaking down the bleach (to be honest I don't even think she's putting bleach, just smelly stuff) and not disinfecting since for a while there all the dogs were getting very very ill regardless of what we were doing, and low and behold all the cleaner bottles were all orange and fruity smelling. So maybe buying smelly stuff that also kills like that may work out better.

ooo! thats very dangerous, i hope they were reprimanded. and ODOBAN can be used as a air freshner as well, so im sure it would work. i personally HATE the smell of bleach after working in the health care field for my entire adult life (only like 6 years but yeah ya kno... lol) so i dont even allow bleach in my home.

I'm allergic to mould and have had some BAD drain blockage problems, so i am a fan of bleach as it is the ONLY THING that will kill mould.  (all 'mould killing' products are just bleach with other chemicals added)
That being said i would NEVER use it in a rat cage.....
Title: Re: Odoban love
Post by: mccauleywent73005 on May 21, 2010, 04:50:09 PM
odoban kills mold, also, bleach is perfectly safe to use in rat cages if it is rinsed properly. anyway... little kids drink pool water and they don't die.. what do you think they use in pools? chlorine (bleach) also, tap water is chlorinated to varying degrees as well. not good, but small amounts will NOT kill you.

How close is your crabitat to the rat cage? If it is in a different room I would think it would be fine. How big is the 'tat? If it's moveable you could move it or cover it with a damp towel until the scent dissipates.

Would Odoban work in spray bottle form?  I can throw my Martin's in the tub, but I just ordered a CN and I live in a third floor apartment.  I can't exactly wheel it outside to hose down and I don't want to have to break it down twice a week.  (I have some pee happy boys.)  Would I be able to dilute the Odoban in a spray bottle, spray the bars of the cage, and just rinse off with wet paper towels?  Or does Odoban really require a good scrubbing?
Title: Re: Odoban love
Post by: mccauleywent73005 on May 22, 2010, 09:18:55 AM
nope. odoban comes with a spray bottle if you buy it at marcs. i only spray mine down and then rinse them off, since my martins were bought second hand and they are put together with the c clips, there is NO WAY  i am tearing it down to soak it! haha.

for the pvc pipe, nest boxes, wheels, and all other plastic items, i fill the bathtub up and pour odoban in, let everything soak for about 10 mins, drain, turn the shower on to rinse everything, then put it all on a towel to air dry. no scrubbing required! ;)  :thumbsup2:

do you have to buy obodan that is specifically for pet odors, or is it an all purpose cleaner?  Should you wait till the smell is gone before placing animals back in the cage?  Do you need to rinse it off like you do with bleach?  I am very intrigued and would really like to try this stuff (and I have a Sam's membership!). :)

no. i get the regular all purpose kind. yes i rinse it off, but the cages still have a light clean scent to them after. and no, it doesnt bother the rats at all, i actually have not had a URI (asides from a very very sick girl who had a underlying cause) in i dont know how long...

one more question, when cleaning the bars of the Ferret Nation cage, can I just clean them with the odoban, then after wiping it, spray it down with some water?  I honestly do not want to take my FN apart every time I use it, but don't want to hurt my babies either.

Could not for the life of me find this stuff in stores anywhere. I only found the wipes and had to use stupid bleach to clean the cage...I HATE bleach with a passion. It just smells like the most unnatural and destructive thing that's ever been conceived.
I got the wipes anyway and used them on the wall behind the rat cage. Totally got rid of the pee stains and smell. My room smells so fresh and clean. Part of that might be because the cage is currently in the bathroom drying >_> but still. My wall is clean lol. The floor molding is like new again! Lol. If it could talk it would probably be thanking me right now. It was pretty darn grody. I scrub it sometimes but I can never really get it clean...
I also used the wipes on the yoga mat pieces that I use for shelf liners. I cover them with fabric but the pee still soaks through. They clean up easy but get really stinky and I've never been able to get rid of the smell on them. The OdoBan made them smell very nice though. They don't smell like urine at ALL! Very pleased! So I'd REALLY like to find some of the spray or a gallon jug somewhere but I'll probably always use the wipes for the mats every day and the wall as needed =)
It says they can be used for fabric and upholstery but they kinda fall apart sooo  :dontknow:

sams club and home depot i think are the only places that sell it in the big gallon jugs... and it really is awesome! even with 3 cages that i clean 2x a week a gallon jug still lasts me quite awhile cuz it is very concentrated.
