Title: Meet Pele My Brave Baby Girl
Post by: lilspaz68 on December 20, 2015, 10:05:49 AM
Pele was born to a tiny young micro-eyed mom who was meant to feed a couples snake. The snake wasn't hungry so the young ratgirl got a reprieve, long enough to give birth to 9 pups. The wife of the couple decided that it was a sign and decided she had 24 hours to find this new family a home before they were returned back to the feeder bin.  Kaia linked me to the situation and I discovered she was a 15 minute walk from my home. :)
Mira and her babies came home and all was well for about 12 days. Then an orphaned litter had to join her and her family as I had the only nursing mom.
Pele at this point was “one of the PEW girls” without a name, I was worrying more about her tiny foster sister Lyra at this time.
This all changed when I took the extended family to my moms in the country for the weekend. I woke up at 3 am on the couch to a horrific shriek, rushed to the cage on the desk and found this little girl up in the corner gasping and bleeding from her face. I pulled her out, then moved the whole cage to a standalone table. I realized my mom must’ve had a wildie in the house who bit Pele's nose and yanked. :(  I stayed up with Pele in my hands or cuddled to my neck from then on. She was gasping and swallowing all that blood. I got pics of her a few hours later

She was so sore and swollen she was unable to nurse, eat or drink, and for a day or so I was very hesitant on trying to syringe anything into her as she was gasping. She preferred licking the formula off my finger.

But my brave, brave baby now named Pele ended up living on me when I was home, taking comfort in my hands, submitting to the nastiness of metacam and antibiotics, and after many scary up and downs started slowly coming around.

She became friends with a very elderly gentle boy called Nigel that she would share dinner with and cuddle up to.

It was around this time I started noticing some strange mannerisms. She was constantly flapping her gums and rolling her tongue out if her head. Often lifting her head up like a Hydro baby might. Seemed to have a disconnect between her mouth and her stiffly outstretched front legs, but wasn't clumsy in her hind leg scratching and was very deft at that. Once those waving front legs caught my finger, she was able to lick things off of it pretty well. Then 2 days ago she started sort of chewing a little.

Here are a few videos of my lovely baby…

Dec. 13th

Both of these are from Dec. 19th

So it looks like this will be an ongoing thread for my brave baby, who is learning to play, eat “solids” and get into a bit of trouble lol

What a sweetie-pie!  That picture of Nigel being protective tugs hard at the heartstrings.  I hope she thrives and grows up to be a lovely lady rat.  Bless you for taking her mama in.

I had wildies in the apartment two winters ago (the apartment has since been sealed up, so no further problem, thank God!), and one of them bit half my beautiful sweet Lucy's tail off (fortunately I didn't know about it till it was over, or I'd have been a mess) and injured several other rats through the cage bars.  I believe she was ultimately responsible for the neurological damage that meant I had to put down my beautiful sweet Uriel, too.  (Either she beat him up while he was out of the cage, or he fell trying to get at her, is my theory.)

Do you guys believe it was bad luck you got wild rat in your house/apartment or did they got attracted by the scent of intact females?

Sadly Nigel passed a few days ago, but Pele has her family during the day and Me while at home trying to stuff soft food in her :). I will be keeping mom, tiny Lyra, protective foster sister Sila (different rescue baby who lives with the Extended Family) and Pele. The other babies are quite rough on her and will be adopted out :)

I don't believe it was the scent of females, particularly, just of other rats.  My rats and the wild girls seemed to be very antagonistic and not friendly at all.  It was also partly luck, because I had no problem in previous years.  As a result of this experience, the landlord was motivated to seal up the outside holes in the building; he also has one of the maintenance men come an seal the holes in my apartment walls.

Her companions that are staying...

Mom - Mira (short for Miracle)

Lyra - the wee 'un who put me through fits with her runtiness :)

and Sila (a lucky pickup 2 weeks ago, bought as a baby feeder rat, but owner sold snake and had her left over.  She's only a little older than everyone else and is all rough play with healthy babies but cuddles and takes care of smaller or sickly babies :D)

She's the smeeze

The vet appointment was this morning and it went as well as can be expected :)  I didn't get the terrifying news that the bite had shattered her teeth and caused chunks to go into her sinus (been there, done that...never want to do it again).  Her teeth are nubs but solid nubs, so I am to feel those nubs every day or so to make sure they are still solid and not wiggly.  We put her on zithromax for 3 weeks for the infection and I will give her a bit of metacam.  The opposite side of the bite we are both pretty sure the cheek was fractured probably causing all the toothy issues.  She's in great shape overall and Dr Munn said I did an excellent job getting her to that type of health.  We are going to wait until she's at least 85 grams before attempting x-rays to see what's really going on.  He LOVED all the babies.  Had them climbing all over him and into his sleeves and onto his shoulders LOL

My assumption is that when I went to visit my mom with the entire Extended Family there was a wildie in her home (country) that I wasn't aware of.  Little Pele stuck her wee nose through the bars and the Wildie bit through her muzzle and probably yanked due to the swelling and trauma on the side opposite the bite :(  I heard the shriek and ran for the cage (moved it to safe place right after) My poor baby girl...I held and cuddled her for days, gave her metacam when she stopped gasping, let her suck formula off my hand when she could...a very scary time for us both.

the bite caused some really crazy trauma, and I am starting to think nerve damage to her mouth, etc.

New pics of my girly...she seems better, brighter and stronger and she's growing daily now!!

Last night she weighed 80 grams!!

Dec. 31st, sleepy cuddles in mom's hand.  Also some gentle kisses.

We lost her next oldie (Patience was 3 years old!) so I gave her even older sweet man Coyote...she promptly started licking him.

Pele is still gaining and growing, and unfortunately still sneezing and making noises. :/

But she was a happy little camper tonight. I let her have her Coyote for awhile then we played under the blanket :D

She's moulting right now as well, so you can see her pink skin in a hoodie pattern over her back and head...soo funny!  I cannot catch it on camera though.

Somebody wants to play

These are just quick pics (not pretty as she's a messy eater and I was in a hurry...no time to clean up this morning).

I think I made her FAT.  She looks like a white Syrian hamster at times LOL I weighed her last night and she's 115 grams!

I think your right BigBen. I decided to close my eyes and feel her body and she feels solid but not fat. I am always worrying about this precious girl who entered my life so unexpectedly that all my years of experience fly out the window and I act like I'm a newbie again  :yelcutelaugh:

Pele is wonderful...thanks for asking!!  Her mom on the other hand has been dealing with a persistent sinus infection then the back went crunk last week and she's been taking care of me.

On Thursday I drop Pele and her mom Mira off so Pele can have her teeth trimmed and that skull x-rayed so we know what we are really dealing with. She still sneezes and snorts but I think/hope its because of damaged sinuses not anything more serious.

She's a biiiig girl now of 132 grams and I finally screwed up the courage to get that x-ray done.  Her lower incisors are very overgrown and she'll have to get her first trim, and most likely will be getting them all her life along with my other toothy rat monster I named Teefs. Teefs is less than a year, so she and Pele will probably go in for years to come...every 3 weeks :P

But onto the best part...the pics...

She loves to be in my hand....no matter if she has to shove her way under. She's slept in my hands many times, or under my chin :)

it really really is!

Here's her bottom incisors, I had to clip them last week at home because I found one embedded in her lip so couldn't leave it to hurt her and get infected.  Poor baby.

OK home from the vet, Pelee is sleeping in my lap so of course I have the laptop down on my legs akwardly so I don't disturb her rest.

She got her x-ray, and there was no fracture, it seems her skull grew this way from the bite/damage since she was still growing when it happened. Her top incisors were fractured and now both have come out...but you can still see a lot of tooth root deep inside which could end up causing future problems with infections etc.  Her bottom incisors will need trims very often and I assume that I will be packing up her and my other toothy wonder called Teefs who gets her maloccluded teeth trimmed every 3-3.5 weeks.

The bite caused brain damage so the disconnect with her mouth and her awkward grasp is more likely permanent.  She may be on baytril to prevent infection for the rest of her life, and I'll be trying metacam starting tomorrow to see if she is getting relief from discomfort.

Its kind of what I expected but at least we know what we are dealing with now.

Her bottom teeth look great and there's no infection as of yet in the tops.

My vet used to take pics of the x-rays and email them to me, but the clinic has changed, much too busy for those little details now :(  I asked if the next time I am in, i could bring my camera and take pics of the x-ray myself. :P

Her family got a new addition (a huge neutered black berk boy who is/was scared of other rats) but seems very content with his new wee squirmy family, and is actually playing with the little girls. Pele is often sleeping cuddled up to his side...they are quite the pair!

Old pic of Franky from last year...he looks pretty much the same, just a bit bigger and not as worried about things.

We have a BIG problem Houston...

Pele had her teeth trimmed short on Thursday afternoon right?  The gums at the back of the incisors are higher than the front so the teeth were trimmed down to the back gumline.  I checked them on Thursday night during our many "OMG I missed you cuddles"

Last night she was flapping away when I saw something...

I grabbed her and managed to get a pic...this is her teeth FOUR days later...FOUR.  :shocked2:

Ummmm....she might need them trimmed weekly...trying to reach my vet but he's very sick and might not be in at all this week...  :puppy_dog_eyes:

I of course forgot to bring my camera so I could get pics of her skull X-ray.

So her options aren't great. We trimmed her bottom teeth down again and are going to watch for the same crazy growth. We are hoping the growth slows down as she ages (she's only 3.5 mo) as surgery to remove those healthy bottom teeth could be quite life and death because of the possibility of jaw fracture. So for now we trim weekly and see how it goes. I got a nice surprise when I got my bill, the trims will be heavily discounted  :thumbsup2:
Title: Re: Meet Pele My Brave Baby Girl
Post by: ILoveMyRatties on February 27, 2016, 12:06:02 PM
I hope she will be ok and that eventually her teeth stop growing so fast. Good to know about the discount, so you won't have to break the bank. Is the super fast growth of her teeth due to the fracture or would she have had it anyway?
Title: Re: Meet Pele My Brave Baby Girl

Azizi could only go 2 weeks between trims, and I took him in as an adult, so I'm always shocked when I hear about people who can go a month in between trims!  Hopefully your girl's growth slows down.

I looked at Pele's teeth last night (same 4 day mark) and one is growing faster than the other...sigh. She and Teefs are booked in for Friday drop off.

Teefs teeth are getting worse. Her right upper tusk has black spots on it usually indicating it's rotting inside. Her bottom incisors are growing up to her lip faster than normal. Friday will be 3 weeks on the nose but it might even be too late.

I got 2 pics (1 blurry) showing her teeth yesterday of which I can't post on my phone...grrr. I'll post when I get to work.

Not at this point.  She does get mushy food.  After the trim she sometimes gets pain medications, but is often able to chew on solids again after a few days.

Poor Teefs! Did something happen to Teefs, or is this a genetic problem? Can Teefs brux?

Poor Teefs! Did something happen to Teefs, or is this a genetic problem? Can Teefs brux?

Teefs was born like this. A girl bought her as a baby from the petstore and tried her best to afford the trims, but she kept Leaving it too late and the bottom incisors would grow into the lip and get infected. Each vet trip became a $200 expense. She was going to euth her until I stepped in. She was only 5 months old at the time.

Hi Lilspaz,

I just went to google and typed in 'normal rat skull xray' - and under images it seems to be showing one. (For me it's the second image shown over to the right. The first one seems to be a human skull, and then right after that.) I clicked on that image and it matches like the one you have above. Hope that helps, LR2

Those dang teeth!

I took pics yesterday, the 9 day post-trim pictures.
Sigh :/

Called vet clinic told them I was emailing pics to see if Pele should come before Friday, found out my vet isn't in until Wednesday anyways so the earliest would be Thursday :(

At rest.

Oh no. They grow so fast! Is it because of her injury or not related at all? I hope it will start to slow down as she ages.

Poor baby. I love her eyes. Since the X-ray showed the teeth at too deformed an angle for proper bruxing, could you just have them removed?

No because they are set in solidly, not diseased or rotten which would make it a lot easier.  the chances of fracturing her jaw (and ultimately ending her life are waaay too high in this case for me to be remotely comfortable with it.  Incisor removal is a huuuge surgery and very dangerous.

Wellll we actually have some good news today.  Whether it was the top incisors falling out or the trims she's received, Pele's teeth seem to be growing OUTSIDE of her mouth, which means not piercing it but just pressing on the outside of her lip.  She can still eat as her teeth grow one way and she licks out of the side of her mouth.  We *might* be able to trim every 3 weeks if Dr Munn agrees with my assessment :)

new Pele pics :)  She has a real love for oldies...she cuddles up to them, grooms them gently, and keeps them company.  She prefers these little oldies to even her own family.  I left her out with Eagan my 38 month old boy who is more or less living on my bed :)  I had him in with some other oldies but he wasn't really happy, so back out on my bed he went to his joy.

Eagan

She's lovely.  She's got a ton of oldie companions and its been really crazy at my place in the last month hence no pics.  A rescue situation was supposed to be 2 adults, 12 babies (implied they were newborn) ended up being 3 adults, a mouse who lived with them (including an adult male rat ) and 19 babies which quickly turned into 33 babies (4 back to back litters for the 2 young females).

I saw the picture of Mr. Mousie (I know, not his name... Little Rat?) but didn't know about all the rescues and babies (REALLY?!  People don't know that putting a male in with females will result in babies?  And then to give the pregnant females to someone else.  **tsk tsk**)  (BTW... The little male mouse who thinks he's a rat is so cute!!)

That a lot of ratties. They were pregnant again while still nursing:( Poor ratties, must be tough on their bodies. Are you fostering them for a rescue or just got them directly?
Title: Re: Meet Pele My Brave Baby Girl
Post by: lilspaz68 on April 12, 2016, 04:50:13 PM
I picked them up directly but a wonderful rescue is going to take in any babies I need to adopt out which is wonderful.

The online ad basically said that my pet male rat and his girl companion had too many babies.  Its too hard to clean.  About 12 babies.  Come on down, bring a container and take as many as you want. Ad was for free baby rats, free adult rats.

Went there (seriously scary area at 10:30 pm...some wonderful rescue friends drove me when they heard where I was going)  and found a whole bunch of vertical type bird cages cobbled together and rats EVERYWHERE!

The guy lifted up the cages from the base (which was a coffee table) and picked up the box in the bottom..baby rats scattered everywhere onto the floor :(  It was awful!!..we were on hands and knees tryign to get babies out from under a wall radiator and under furniture.  Props to my friends husband for not batting an eye and just kept scooping up babies and tossing them at me.  I started pulling out the babies that were huddled up on the top levels and in the dim light pulled out a little black guy, looked at him and said "YOU look like a mouse" and it was him (named Gatsby).  None had names prior.  It was an insane rescue.

The 2 girls were communal nursing and the older one is most likely the tiny girls mom.  She was exhausted because she was feeding ALL that she could while heavily pregnant.  She popped and had 10 babies 2 days after I got her home. Sadly 6 died because of the communal nursing...she didn't have enough milk.  Had to force-wean the oldest, and they lived with Dad, then a weekish later the girls came out and the new males went in.  Its been a tricky balancing act and we almost lost 2 babies to a crazy accident of the 4 survivors, etc.  The bigger momma was biting iniitally but now she's very trusting.  The little girl got HUGE, and finally popped on April 1st, and Gatsby Mouse-Rat is thrilled to help out again.  :D

A small sleepy story line featuring Ferdy (but with a cameo of Pele  :cheeky:) ...

Ferdy loves to use rats to lie on, he puts his feet on them and sleeps with a smile on his face.  Rats get used to his little idiosyncrasy and put up with it after awhile.  He really didn't like Pele...she moved too quick, would climb on him with her sharp claws as he whines like a baby...still does but she's more respectful.  She is the perfect size to rest his chin on

Then she moved, and was grooming and coming out to see me :D

So he went onto his next footwarmer, little Walk About PT gal Cece...he surprised me by very gently grooming her...he's normally a rough, overly-brusque boy, no malice but no sensitivity...until now...awww

He's a very opinionated funny little bumpkin.  Things must be just so.  He will crawl up on my side or on my stomach and then use his paws and sometimes his teeth to pull my clothes away so he can get his cold paws on my nice warm skin.  Then I can feel him sigh and settle down LOL

OR I put my hand down flat on the bed while lying on my side when we go to bed, and he licks it over and over and tries to get all 4 feet on my hand, then settles down, sighs and sleeps all cuddled up.

Pele made it to 3 weeks between trims and she and Teefs are going in together to get done today.  Pele's teeth are still crazy growing but this little lady lucked out immensely.  Her lower incisors are actually growing outside her mouth now, and don't grow or cut into her lips anymore.

I got pics this morning to show you how insane it all looks...she hates this but forgave me afterwards when I told her "no more, gave her kisses and cuddles and got kisses back.

Pele is great.  The every 3 week trim with Teefs going in at the same time is working out pretty well.  She's about 6 months now and weights 218 grams.  She's active and lean and loves to play...her way...shaking her head, batting at me with her front paws etc :D

HATES being picked up and held to look at her teeth, anything remotely like that and she struggles and makes silent "you are KILLING me" faces.

LOVES being held in my arms or in my lap and stroked, and cuddling, and licking me gently, and taking care of her oldies and me of course  :cheeky:

My beautiful little hamster-head

Not liking her baytril (shes snuffly right now which always worries me)

the rescue situation has settled down to a dull roar.  William the dad has 6 boys and adores them.  Siobhan, Iona, Gatsby the rat-mouse have 8 girls...and bedlam as only baby girls can cause.  Serious mom S is learning to play, and really adores hand-wrestling now :)  Gatsby the mouse had some identity issues once the babies grew up too much.  What is MY Purpose in Life beyond being a Nanny to tiny babies.  He seemed depressed and unhappy but I talked with Arlene and she talked to him, and he rebounded.  Now he sleeps with the rats but especially mom S and seems much happier :)

Just a wee glimpse into Pele's caretaker life.

Here she is with the new rescue boy Emmett, who came in with a facial abscess, but then his big brother beat him up for his "off" behaviour a day later.  Yep, poor Emmett has PT and has now been paired with an elderly head waving manic girl...but Pele likes him too and will happily let him use her as a pillow most times...and sometimes she just stands on him. Poor confused Emmett.

Hahaha some rats will roll their tongues and smack their gums together as their version of bruxxing.  Its a failing of mine, I get all *gooey*melty* when I see it.  I finally got one decent video of it years ago with Sage as a baby.  She lip flaps right at the end. :)  Pele does it most likely because her mouth feels funny from the damage done.  She may have never been a lip flapper normally, but she is now. :D

We had a rattie who grew toenails at warp speed. Lava ledges, brick by water bottle, etc made no diff. When I clipped his toenails, he would painstakingly check them over and over, as if counting to see if I had amputated any toes.  ;D

A happy bunny-hamster-rat headed girl  :yelcutelaugh:

The babies are 4 weeks old, she's a tiny rat.

Oh wow, I thought my special needs guy Ebi was tiny!  He's just a smidge under 300, which I suppose is still small for a boy.

Let's see if these links work, if not I'll upload pics to a normal hosting site.  Here's Ebi in all of his ridiculous cuteness:

Here he is with normal-sized Lord Fuzzington for comparison haha:

He was a runt, then developed what the vet thinks was meningitis, then he had chronic joint abscesses until we finally nailed down a med combo that fought them off.  Poor little dude has had a rough time, but he turns a year in a few weeks, so he's definitely beat the odds.  Aside from fused elbows, he putters around fine and seems pretty normal, all 280 grams of him!

Ewwwww what a tough little fellow!!!  Can I ask about the joint abscesses?  I have a nakie girl who was dumped outside with 28 other rats, she has ongoing internal abscesses. I am treating with baytril and metronidazole but wondered what needs worked for your lad?

I adore that pic with him and his normal sized nakie brother. :)

For him Orbax was the miracle drug.  He had them on his knees and elbows, apparently there is a human analogue according to my human physician friend.  Something to do with a failure of a particular enzyme to develop, the enzyme breaks down pus.  The humans with the disease have compromised immune systems and chronic medial joint abscesses like Ebi, and eventually die of resistant bacteria in their teens.  Sad stuff.

Also worth noting - I think he is recessive hairless rather than double rex, because there were no rexes in his litter and both parents looked to have normal coats.  This was from a BYB who had gotten overwhelmed and had a zillion babies that needed homes STAT.

Pele is over a year old now...Photobucket has been a real cow lately and I haven't been able to upload pics until today (you end up in a permanent loop of logins when you hit Upload).  Someone figured out a temporary fix of uploading one by one through Editor...this is for anyone else having issues.

Pele always pushes under the blankets and loves to curl up on my feet, by my legs or on my tummy.  One day it was too warm for blankets so she decided to make do.  Thank the rat gods for oversized sleep pants.

Last night I had to take in 2 orphan wees.  There was originally 5 "rescued" by a collector.  He and his wife already have lots of rats, but wanted to collect one of every color, pattern and coat type, so they rescued  5 babies from the feeder bin.  Baby 1 died by being killed by their adult biter female *duh*, baby 2 died (no clue but suspecting MC) and 3 babies were picked up by my friend on Nov. 29th.  The little notch capped female died during the day at my friends (to her sadness) and from her description it really sounded like MC. :(

So I get the 2 wees home, a lovely safe blue hoodie girl I named Eirlys ("Ire-liss" which means Snowdrop in welsh) and the high white smaller boy I named Rhys ("Reese" meaning Enthusiasm).

Pele LOVES them!!  So you now get double the please today :)

Don't mind the teeny cage, my foster only had a carrier I had loaned her to keep them in...they don't seem to care.

Pele at 25 months has some health issues but we are ready for the fight now.  We had a lovely cuddly night last night and are all ready to start trying to help some of them.

When its time to go to bed, I often pick up Pele, turn on my side, then put my hand flat on the bed with my fingers curled up.  Pele will often groom, lick me as I rub her with my fingers, but will finally shift so all 4 of her feet are on my hand, settle down and we sleep.  I finally caught this on my cell phone.

A bit of grooming to start

a bit of rearranging
