Title: Are used rat accessories safe?
Post by: tina42l on December 12, 2016, 11:46:37 AM
Hello!

My last rat recently passed away and I am looking to give away my ratcessories. ) : I was wondering what everybody thought about giving away the igloos, corner litter box, carrier, food bowls, and water bottles. Do you think anybody would want them? Do you think it's safe to give them away or should I just toss them? I want to do what's right for the rat community!

Thank you for your input!

I've had people donate plastic stuff like that to the rescue before, so yes if someone else is in need of it it's ok to give to another person who has rats.  I've always made sure to wash the stuff with warm water and soap before giving it away.

The viruses to worry about, Sendai and SDA, die quickly outside a rodent host.  If it's been three hours or more since the items were last in contact with a rat, then they are safe to give away.
