Dachshund potty breaks....how often???
« on: February 23, 2005, 09:24:22 AM »
I'm dog-sitting for a friend because her husband is in the hospital.  I just started keeping the dachshund last night.  I let him out several times last night to go to the restroom, but he pee-d on something anyway - only a few minutes after I brought him into the house.
I fussed at him and he was remorseful.  I chalked it up to being in a new environment and after about 10 minutes of letting him feel guilty, I pet him again.  He was good the rest of the evening.

This morning I got up at 5:00 and let him out of his crate and took him outside.  He pee-d and was ready to go back inside.  At 5:40 I found poo in the house.  I showed it to him and fussed, and then put him in his crate for about 15 minutes.  Again, he was remorseful and I decided it must have been partly my fault for not keeping him out longer when we went out the first time.   Then at 6:40 he pee-d again.  In the house again.

So now my patience is wearing thin.  I know we're both learning, because I'm used to a labrador's bladder size.  But I need to know how often I should take him out to do his thing!  It seems to be about every 45 minutes to an hour, and that's just ridiculous to me.  Do they go that often??
Or am I not keeping him out long enough each time?  How do I know when he's really ready to come in?  Should I just stay out 1/2 an hour each time to be sure?    ???

Well, we're doing better today, so I guess it was an adjustment problem.

I let him out at 5:00 again, and he pee-d, and then at 5:35 we went out again and he went #2.  So maybe I just have to get used to his system.   The vet suggested that he may be marking the house, and that makes sense.  I didn't think of it initially, but he isn't fixed, so he's probably making sure his scent is prominent.

Of course I don't want his scent to be prominent, but I'll just have to keep a close eye on him and take him out when I can.

I good idea, simply teach the dog that when he need to go to the bath to stand by the backdoor and jump and bark. Then you let him outside and say something like, "Go Get Busy." Then wait inside for the dog to return to the backdoor and let him in. Sometimes the dog with use the restroom in the house, but not as often. It isn't hard to train your dog to do this. I did this with my dog. Sadly he shed to much and now he lives outside.
