Reaction to prednisone question
« on: August 13, 2006, 12:37:48 AM »
I don't have a dog but my Mom does. My Mom called and asked me to meet her at the ER Vet on my way home from work tonight. My Mom's dog (chi x pom) was panting hard, shaking and throwing up.

The Vet did a through exam and said it was possibly a back injury because she was showing stress signs. He checked her legs, hips and neck and she did not have any pain in those joints. He also said it could possibly be a reaction to prednisone. The dog's regular Vet put her on that for skin allergies.

She got a shot of morphine for pain and to calm her down. I'm not dog very dog savvy when it comes to meds/reactions.

Has anyone had/seen a dog with a reaction to prednisone like this?

Pred is a steriod so I guess an reaction is not unheard of.  But I'm not sure.  Sorry I can't help you there.

Just wanted to say I hope your mother's dog is feeling better quickly!

Thanks, she's much better today. We're pretty sure it was the pred. becuase she's not showing any signs of pain. I was calling her Stoner Baby all weekend because the morphine made her looks stoned out of her mind.

I had a mouse react really bad to pred. He got a slight OD I think (the stupid med shop mixed his meds wrong and I had to give him 1 cc twice a day in which I was NEVER sure he got it all) and nearly died. He was limp, lethargic and had a seizure as well. Pred is nasty stuff but sometimes it's neccessary. :(

It was so weird, the way Taz was acting. She was panting extremely hard and her eyes were wide - like she was having a panic attack. My Mom has over a $1,000.00 in this dog - bladder /kidney problems. She's going to go crazy when the dog passes, which I hope is a long long long time from now. She's only 3.

This was from a couple of months ago, she thinks she's a baby and lets my Mom do anything to her lol

Actually, this does seem to be a normal reaction...

I am not sure if it is for a dog, but it is for a human. I, myself, am actually on prednisone right now, and let me tell you- I am hating every moment of it. BUT I do agree it can be very helpful to some people/dogs.
