I'm pretty sure the bigger doors are standard now.  They don't make the other way anymore.

i just got an email from martincages, they did say that the doors ar 12X12 now. They want to know if i want a 690 or a 695.. im looking for something that is 30 X 14 X 36.. I had an older verson of a chinchilla cage and it was really  heavy and hard for me to move. Have they changed the design on that cage at all? Is it really hard to clean and move?

I have the R695 and I don't think it is that hard to move or lift out of the drop in pan.

Ratlovingkippy06,

I don't have a Martins but I was seriously looking into ordering one before i found a different cage on craigslist.  Most people will say that the 690 just doesn't have enough floor space for rats.  It sounds like you are torn between the two, and in that case I would say go for the 695.  You won't regret having the extra space and if you ever need to add another rat there will be room.  You are looking for something that is 30 x 14 x 36 so the 695 would just be 4 inches deeper than that.  Just my opinion though, you're the one who has to live with the cage!  :thumbsup2:

well heres what is going on with me and maybe someone has a better idea on what martin cage would be best.

I have a FN with 6 rats ( 2 neutored males, 4 girls), i wanted to add two yonger girls to the cages but they are soo tiny and i don't know if they are even going to get to 300grams at this rate. Also  they haven't been getting along with any of my older rats.. i mean Romeo is hiting the 600gram mark and  could do some damage.

I have 5 old females ( 2-3 years old) in a All living things cage that is 30 X18X30. Its the older verson, i have had it for about 2 years now. the paint is coming off, the bars and pan are cut up, but its getting the job done and its a strong cage.  Three of the girls aren't doing very well, 2 are having surgerys to try and remove several tumors. I don't know how much longer they will be with me, i hope another year but i don't know..

Remy- has is own single cage because he had a lot of health problems a few months ago but im planning on getting him neutored and i hope to put him in the FN.

soo i want to get a martin cage that i can have for the two young females that i don;t think will ever be big enough to go into the FN and they aren't really getting along with them anyway. There are two males that i have basically fallen in love with at work and they are beautiful rats. Both are dumbos but one is a mink and the other is an almost all white male with black eyes and 3 dots of black on his back. They are a good size ( for being babies) and i think i could at one point get them into the FN as well but i don't know that for sure.. soo thats where i stand.

I could get the 690 which would be fine for the two younger girls or i could go with the larger cage.. and move things around in the room and try and fit the 695 somewhere. ::)
Edit: I am getting back my shorter dresser so the cage wouldn't be 7 feet high so i am stronger thinking about the 695 but its on back order..is it worth the wait?

Here is a pic of my very simple martins. They have free range to the top of the playground so they don't spend much time in it anyway.

Ohhh I was trying to make up my mind about getting a martins or another cage from petsmart. I will definitely be going with a martins now! I can't wait to get it and decorate!! I think I will be getting a R695, My two boys will be spoiled rotten!

I do have a quick question though. How much fabric did everyone buy to cover the floors with? And how many "sets" of floor covers do you have?

I'd like to at least buy the fabric ahead of time so I have it when the cage gets here!

It takes a little less than a yard to do cage pads for the R695, not including the pan.  I always just use cheap fleece down there because for whatever reason my girls destroy that fleece VERY quickly.

You need at least two set of cage pads so you can change them and laundry them without having to wait to put the ratties back in.

I'm so excited! I just found a Martin R-699 on Craigslist for $115. I've wanted one of these for so long! Hopefully it all works out, I'm going down next Sunday to look at it.

Got the cage in October and quickly grew to dread cleaning day because I was using dollar tree fleece blankets folded to fit everywhere. I wish I could get the CN but I don't have the space in my tiny room. I finally got my first liners sewn and in the cage last week; it's the most filled its ever been because there's normally only one hammock. I have to redo the middle shelf because I micalculated and it's not a 1/2" short on all sides , I also have to redo the bottom liner in a pillowcase style as since the pics have been taken my little mischeif chewer has decided he doesn't like the liner in the draped fashion because any corner close enough is pulled in and chewed to shreds.

Thank you for the bigger hammock, mommy!

This one is wobbly though...

That's a long drop mommy...

I'll go up instead.

I'm so glad I looked at this thread. I have had my heart set on getting an FN cage, but after looking at this thread, I really like the Martins cages a lot. I went to their website and was pleasantly surprised to see how comparable the prices for Martins are to other cage brands. I think this is the way to go...at least for me. I recently upgraded cages for my girls, but once the babies are out of quarantine, they can join the bigger girls (assuming intros go well), and they will need to be in a cage they can't squeeze through....sounds like a call for a Martins cage to me! I am so jealous of you people finding such great deals on Craigslist...I have been keeping my eyes peeled but nothing so far. In fact, I posted a wanted ad on Craigslist today...keep your fingers crossed for me!

Weaver...I envy your cage decorating abilities! So many posters talk about stealing each others ratties, but I'm going to steal Weaver and force her into cage decorating slave labor at my house. Hey, I have AC, so it'll be humane condition....and you can even sleep with my 8 year old, though he claims the top bunk. Hey, I didn't say anything about benefits!  ;D

Like many others, I was debating between the FN, CN, or Martin's.  Before Thanksgiving , I ordered a Martin's 695.  Of course, it was on backorder, because so many people want them!  Needless to say, I LOVE my Martin's!  It is HUGE for my 6 week old girls, but two of their neutered brothers will be joining them in 2 weeks.  It is so much fun to decorate and play around with (will post pics soon).

My husband and I got some scrap carpeting, cut it to fit all the levels, Scotchguarded it, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.  We cut enough, that when it is time to clean the carpet, we already have pieces to put back in.  But, we do cover the carpet with fleece pieces, for extra protection.  The girls don't bother the fleece and it just looks so incredibly comfortable!  I have another large ferret cage from Kritter Koncepts that houses four large rattie girls, and after two years, the girls (all sisters) are now on carpet and fleece too!  I just did it today, and they are sleeping in places (on the floor) where they have never slept before.  I think they are happy with it.  They are litterbox trained (on their own), so it will be easy to keep clean.  I just cut fleece in pieces that looks like they will fit the levels and laid it all down.  They haven't bothered it yet.  Sure, you may spend some money on fleece at first, but in the long run, it is more economical when you can just wash and reuse.  Joann fabrics always has fleece remnants at 50% off by my office!

I have such cage envy right now!!!  Those cages are fantastic!  I LOVE the decorations!

I just got a couple of super pet ferret cages (friend found them on the trash)... I put them together and made a 5' rattie skyscraper, hehe...  Still have to get therm ready for my 3 girls and seeing all the wonderful stuff in here is great inspiration!

I'm going to look for fleecy stuff today....  I hope they like it... Right now they have a tiny martin cage.  I hope this skyscraper thing works out.

I know that this thread is for pictures, so I'll make it quick and then disappear.

I am soon to be a new rat owner and am almost definitely going with a Critter Nation. Looking at these pictures, it seems that Martin's have wire floors. Aren't those bad for their little feeties? Doesn't Critter Nation come with solid shelves?

Yes, Martin's come with wire floors, except for the plastic base it has.  Most people cover the floors though with fabric, linoleum tile, or a combo of the two to avoid feet incidents.  Martin's makes the best wire cages around for rats though.  Best customer service as well.  CN/FNs come with pans for the floors, but I'm not sure if it's solid underneath the pans though.

Ah okay. I would just think that the best makers of rat cages would know that wire floors are hazardous and painful. :\

Most people, with either cage use some kind of floor covering.  I personally don't mind the wire floors, no urine puddling in the corners of the cage.  The only wire that my rats touch with their feet is the ladders and the sides of the cage.  The grid spacing on the ladders is so close that it is perfectly safe for their feet, and mine are still young so they barely even touch the ladder to get where they need to go.  Two hops and they are there.  As they get older, I will probably over the ladders in fleece as well.  Even the CN has wire ladders, and theirs are actually stairs, not just small grid spacing.  I would think there is more of a chance of injury with that kind.

I do like the CN cage as well.  I also have given some thought to upgrading my cage and getting the girls one.  The only complaint I have about the Martins' cages is the black bars.  I wish they were lighter in color.  Other than that I really like the cage.  I know that some people say that they like the FN and CN because the doors open all of the way and it is easier to get to the rats.  Well now that my girls are love bugs, I have a hard time even with my Martins to keep them in the cage.  Everytime I open the door they are right there while I try to hold the three of them in there.  I can't imagine trying to keep up with them if I had the whole front of the cage open.

How hard is the 695 to clean if it doesn't have the jumbo doors? I might be buying a second hand one that was purchased from Martin's in 2007/2006, so it is unlikely to have the new big doors.  Also, how heavy is it without the pan?  A guestimate would be awesome; I'm just wondering if I should go for this second-hand 695 or go for the 680.  Advice?

Here's my 690.  I got it a while ago, before the big new doors.  Before you wonder where all the rats are, they're in the boat at the top.

Ok, even though I was the last one to post my cage, I sewed the ratties up a few new things and cleaned their cage last night and I wanted to share.  It has been a while since I have done a pastel cage :D

Another view of the bottom level.

So, what do you think?  Do you like the brights, or the pastels?  :wink5:

You decorate your cage so well!

How do you get the shelf liners to stay in place? Don't your ratties pull the corners up? Thanks

Thank you for your nice comments.  I just answered the cage liner question on another thread, but here it is again  ;)

Quote from the other thread....
I am not sure how others do their's, but mine are not attached to the cage.  I use one layer of batting inbetween my fleece.  My rats do get under the pads on occasion, but with the batting in there, the pads are heavy enough to lay back down when the rat comes out.  I have to fix the pads several times a day, but the rats don't chew them or move them all over the cage.  On the bottom level (the pan), for whatever reason, my rats love to shred whatever I put down there, so I just use one layer of fleece to cover the pan.  I am only able to use that piece of fleece for about two cage cleanings and than it is pretty ratified.  I than just recycle that fleece and use the unchewed parts to make the lining for the inside of a hammock, or cube so it does not go to waste.  Even with me having to replace their fleece so often, it is a lot cheaper than buying disposable bedding, and better for the environment.

I also want to add, that I do a full cleaning of the cage every three days.  If my rats' cage goes any longer they tend to start moving stuff around, chewing their stuff up, and become very distructive.  They really don't like to be dirty at all.

My first set of cage pads was attached to the cage with grommets for holes in all corners of the cage, and two in the middle.  I used clips to hold them in place.  My rats chewed that set of liners to bits.  They hated the pads attached.  I have not made them again like that, and they do much better with them just measured to fit the shelves tightly

We got our cage in on Thursday. We had originally ordered powder-coated, but then we got an e-mail that it was on backorder and wouldn't be in stock again for three more weeks. Since the new girls came home on Friday, we made the decision to downgrade to galvanized which was in stock then. Now I just got to decide on what color of kid-safe Rustoleum to buy... :P

I'm working on a huge fish bed for the top floor, which is why there's so much empty space there.
