I cannot wait until my CN arrives, so I can do measurements & start attempting floor mats & such to decorate it. :)

I'm already working on some ''decorations'' (they have a tunnel tube I made, and I'm attempting to make a cube soon...

Should be interesting...since I have NO prior experience with a sewing machine, and I'm doing these without any patterns or instructions. Hehe.

Soon...I'll be able to add pictures of my CN....it's suppose to arrive on the 3rd. ((I'm hoping for tomorrow, though. However unlikely that may be, it's my birthday, and it'd be great timing. LOL))

For any new sewers who are decking out their new CNs, you might consider using a papery thin fabric that has a grid pattern on it (in square inches) to make patterns for yourself.  I found the fabric at Ben Franklin, but I do not know what it is called (I had to ask a store clerk for help).  As a new sewer, it has been really helpful to me when designing and cutting for cubes, hammocks, liners, etc.  Didn't mean to hijack - there just has been a lot of comments made recently about sewing for CNs, so I wanted to share this idea!   :)  Can't wait to see everyone's designs for their CNs!

I'm getting a sowing machine on march 11th (my mom is giving my dad one for his birthday, but he HARDLY sows, and I know it'll be open for me!). My hammocks won't take hours anymore!
I am ratless. Someday I will own rats again.

Rats across the Bridge: Penny, Heidi, Jerry, Teddy, Lucy, Sophie, Silhouette, Jupiter, Ozy, and Rorschach. I love you all and hope we will someday meet again.

My hammies from MRR came today. The girls are cautiously trying to figure out how to get into to pocket hammock  :yelcutelaugh:

They already love the honeycomb though!

I can't wait until #1 my hammocks from artsiekat get here! and #2 I get my butt in gear and star sewing up a storm so I can have all sorts of cute matchy stuff!

And grr they already chewed the corners of the cute pirate fabric I posted up there (first post on this page). I guess I'll just cut it up and make it into hammocks.

(The weird beige thing going down the middle that's kind of blocked by the door is a dog rope I hung from the top of the cage)

I got my critter nation today! It wasn't supposed to arrive until thursday. I forget the name but I bet whoevers birthday was today is getting theirs on thursday. She ordered hers a day before mine. I ordered from petsmart. I got home and didn't even know it was there until I left for work. I saw a tiny peice of paper in the rocks. It was ups saying they left it by the side gate and the note fell off the door. I looked on both sides of my house, nothing! I went into my backyard and it was up against the wall. Box is in perfect condition. I wrecked the corner cardboard by trying to pick it up. I'm putting it together tomorrow!

I forgot to get back to you! I got your voicemail....you sounded like a little girl on Christmas morning who woke up to a dollhouse  :yelcutelaugh:!

PICTURES, when you finish putting it together  ;). You'll be going home this weekend with a butt load of new hammocks/beds to deck it out with  :hyper:.

Mine is ''out for delivery'' today from the next town over, so....

As I sit anxiously waiting for a knock at my door...

Perhaps I should charge my camera for pictures galore as I put the CN together.  :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Ok, it arrived!!

It was quite simple to put together, and came in almost-perfect condition (one part was bent, so I had to smack it with a hammer to get it where it was suppose to be). I was very happy to see there was barely any damage during the travels from Indiana to Washington. :) Good job, UPS!

Put it together all by myself. Could've requested my husband's help, but where would the fun in that be? I like the accomplished feeling of getting it done myself!

Hubby says it looks great! I have to agree. Critter Nations have such a ''neat/clean'' appearance to them. I love it!!!

Here it is! (Not on the stand. I didn't have room for it to be on the floor, so I left the stand off, and just put it on a table. Once we move, I'll be able to put it on the stand, though.)

We got ours on Friday and the door was melted into frame and also it was warped and wouldn't close until we whacked it a few times with the hammer and also a bunch of the pegs were crooked so we had to fix those too but other than that it was pretty easy to put together....and the girls love it

after reviewing this thread, I kind of feel bad I didn't get my ratties a CN...I got them a cage (very similar to the martin's cages) because I just figured I could carpet the ramps and such...

Maybe I should take it back and get a CN?  I don't wanna be a bad mom :(

You're not a bad mom! It's really up to you if you want to get a CN or not.

Personally, I've gone through so many cages in the years I've owned rats...
It's nice to finally have one that I know will last for a long, long time.

It looks so nice, too!

I agree with PureMuttz!  I'm sure the cage you bought will be fine for your ratties  :)  But probably in the end you'll upgrade to a CN/FN, since it seems most all of us do  :yelcutelaugh:

It does look very nice indeed!  I think I picked the one I did because I'm used to having rabbits, and cleaning up cages like that.  Where I just dump the pan out, wash it, and place new bedding.  How exactly are CN's cleaned, perse?  I don't mean to sound like a dummy, I'm just going to be a new rattie mom soon, and I don't wanna muff up.  I've had plenty of other small animals before, but nothing as rewarding as rats.

Though I will say...it seems as though the cage I got them might be bigger than some of these.  I don't know, for three rats I'm sure it'll seem like a palace!  too bad I can't post the pictures in this thread, or when I get my babies, I would go pic crazy!

We still expect pictures!  :poke: Hehe

I'm sure the cage you bought is plenty big enough for three ratties.  When we got our ratties last year we bought them a Rat Manor from Petco, and I just recently took pictures of it next to the CN... Holy cow! What a difference!! But the Rat Manor was definitely big enough for our two little girls.  Four of them made it cramped, so we upgraded to the CN, which is total overkill by the way, but they love it.

Unless you have an entire mischief like some of the members do on here, a CN/FN is not particularly necessary  ;D

I found two cages at Petco, that rat manor is $89.99 and there is another one its like My First Home or something or other, it has three levels to it and its $129. Id love to get a good cage but if i get my ratties from someone this weekend I wont have the time to wait for it to ship.

Are the rats you're getting young? If they're small enough you may just want to get a smaller travel/vet cage to keep them in and order a better cage asap. It'd be a good investment for a hospital cage/travel cage later on and you'd be able to get a better cage. Maybe a Martins? They ship rather quickly and are much better cages than the two you named. Either way, hope everything works out :]

Ok so I did a FULL cleaning today; washed pans, hosed the entire thing, etc. I also decided to switch all my sets to towels; IMO they work better than fleece at absorbing smells and they are chewed a lot less by my girls. (Also helps that walmart had some nice towels for $3.50). So here it is:

Top:

Bottom

Action shots:
Lexi-"mom these new cage pads sure is comfy!"

Lexi again- "look ma, no hands!"

Lexi Again!- "hey ma, is i allowed to chew dis?"

Jade- "this tube is very snuggly mom, i thinks iz gonna have a nap"

I cleaned my CN on Tuesday, but haven't had time to take pics yet. I don't think they've completely wrecked it yet, so I'll try to get a few pics when I get home.  :)

Well I bought the polka dot fabric at walmart for $2.44 a yard (only needed 1 yard) and I bought a yard of fleece for the under side for $4.44 a yard. For the bigger pan I just measured it to be about 28x24 and sewed it like you would a normal hammock (printed sides together, sew around 3 edges, turn inside out) then I took batting sheets from walmart and cut them to fit inside the "pocket". I sealed the open side then I sewed up and down to keep the batting in place. I did the same process for the smaller pad.

Hope that helps,
Lauren
