Hey, squirrelsmom, what kind of mats do you use in your cage? I am thinking about getting a CN soon. I use a lot of fleece now, but I have a few that really like to chew holes. What are your mats made out of?

I'm also wondering, anyone can answer, if the wheels can be locked or removed from the CN cage. The place I have in mind for it is in a location where my cats will be able to jump down onto it from my entertainment center, and I don't want it to move. The cats ignore the rats otherwise; they know better!

For me, it seems to be where they go.  Plus it holds the litter box in place so they don't push it all over  :yelcutelaugh:

My cage this week. I have the lower level closed off for the main group right now. My new girl is getting out of quarantine in a few days and thats where she'll live during intros. I figure they get to know each others sent that way. Then a few times a day I'll lower the ladder so they can all hang out.

Man, I gotta have one of these things! I have 55 dollars and a long way to go =S Hopefully I can get one by my birthday, or at least some money for one.
I am ratless. Someday I will own rats again.

Rats across the Bridge: Penny, Heidi, Jerry, Teddy, Lucy, Sophie, Silhouette, Jupiter, Ozy, and Rorschach. I love you all and hope we will someday meet again.

Here's mine at the moment. I think I'm gonna go to JoAnn Fabrics today to get some fabric to make some nice matching bedding out of. I only have one set of matching bedding at the moment, and it's dirty right now.  :P

Haha! I was looking at your siggy and noticed you have a hairless named Gollum. I was totally going to name Sam Gollum when I first got him cuz...well look at him!  :yelcutelaugh: But I figured people would dislike him anyway, being hairless and all, and being named after Gollum wouldn't help his chances any.  rofl! Your rats are very cute by the way!  ;D

LOL! That is funny, great minds think alike I guess! :wink5: Gollum is my  ratty, he's the biggest most gentle sweetheart in the world. No one can meet him without falling in love with him, so I don't worry about the name. Awesome that you have a ratty named Samwise, because if I got another rat that probably would be his name! So you have great taste in names, I must say. :cheeky:

Okay, sorry for straying OT, back on topic now I promise! :angel4:

Cleaned and redid the fleece today!

My dearpie regular hammock!

The bottom half, green and blue! My double decker from dearpie. I love it, and they love it.

Then had to move the hammock because Sprampf showed me that they can crawl on top of the wheel and fall.

She's my acrobat...

Margot is so tiny! She's 6 weeks old. =)

OMG! I love the cage colors... blue, green, and yellow. And in the first pic, the hooded ratty climbing the ramp? With the determined look on her face and the HT in her mouth, mid-trot? ROFL!!!  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

I got my spring swap package so I've come to brag about my adorable cage. I have all 5 girls in it now (the rescues got kicked out of my parents house and I could only keep them in the plastic tub cage conversion, in the bathroom for so long!).

I need to take pics of them all together in there & with more stuff. Maybe later :)

Hey guys, how many male rats would a single level CN actually hold? The rat cage calculator said quite a few, but I've been reading things that say it isn't correct... I was planning on ordering my single level tomorrow, but if the single level isn't good enough then it'll be another two weeks, probably, before I have enough for a double. :/ I had planned on having 3 males in the single.

I'm also worried about ordering the CN because I live in apartments. Anyone receive theirs in apartments? What do they do if no one's home, deliver it to the office? I hear the things weigh a ton and I'm not exactly strong. *g*

The calc says 6 can fit but I would do 5 tops. I have 3 boys and have SUCH CN envy right now!  I plan on getting mine delivered to my parent's house so I don't have to deal with apartment stuff with it.

I have 5 girls in mine and that's my max. I think it would hold 3 males just fine! If you want a double, just wait the 2 weeks! I wish I could afford a double, but the single works fine for now.. and if you have 3 males, I don't think it's necessary for you to get a double.

I just had mine sent to my boyfriends parents house since his mom doesn't work. See if you can find someone like that, I didn't want to leave mine in front of my apartment door either.. which is what usually happens if we get something and no one is home.

It really depends on the activity level. I have four in a double, but they are all very active. How active are your boys? That's what is going to decide it for you. Some people claim that five in a one level isn't squished, but I personally think it is. If I were you, I'd probably go for a one level for three boys, but anymore and I'd consider the two level.
The dogs: Sara and Lola. The kitties: Emy and Molly
Rest in peace my sweeties

The cage calculator says six, but I would say four or five depending upon the boys.  It is perfect for three.  I got my CN at my apartment no problem, they just left it there on the inside of the lobby door.  I personally can't lift and carry the box with the cage, but I can lift and carry the cage, the box is just terribly awkward.  If you want something more portable, the Martin's R695 is also a great cage and much lighter, also suitable for 3 rats.  Of course, the CN has wheels, so once you get it set up, it really isn't so bad!
Two girls have arrived :) Names coming soon.

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies, everyone! It seems the single level likely will be plenty big enough. :) I'm thinking I might want to get bigger anyway, though, so they have more room, but I don't know. At the moment my rat is in a giant plastic tub (converted to make a good cage--he even has a hammock, shoddy though my sewing skills are!).

However, I just looked on Craigslist again, and apparently I was looking in the wrong section. There's a bunch of cages being sold! One is a double level FN for $125! Would that work for large rats? And how much does it generally cost to convert those--using wire mesh, I'm assuming? I'm also going to inquire about some ferret cages listed. :)

Everyone here that has helped me suggests $50-$60 depending on how many supplies you had to begin with. (Wire cutters & zip ties)

I've spent FOREVER looking at everyone's cages. They all look FANTASTIC.

Penny-I'm in the same boat as you. I've decided I just can't bring myself to buy a double unit and will just be buying one. Now to save and convince my dad I really do need it..hm..

And Lauren..if you ever wake up and you're missing your CN. I'll be the one that took it.
I LOVE all of your fabrics. SO adorable.

;D

Hm, okay, thanks. That'd still be a good deal, considering how much a double level CN is. :) We have wire cutters and zip ties. I think I'm going to make a separate topic asking people for help deciding on a cage. There are so many my head is spinning! Thanks everyone that's helped so far! :)

Oh, and I forgot to say how lovely everyone's cages are! I seriously lurked on this thread for a few days until I finished, and by the time I was done I was so amazed that I said, "I have to have a CN!" Everyone has such beautiful stuff. :)
