I'm pet sitting a ringneck parrot! *picture added*
« on: June 26, 2009, 01:54:52 AM »
There is a man who can't go out of town for work because he doesn't trust anyone watching his parrot. My friend found his post about finding an occasional pet sitter in the city I'm about to move to on craigslist and I emailed him about it. I handle cockatiels often and he told me they were similar. He wants me to come visit the parrot a few times before he has a trip because he wants her to know me so she doesn't feel abandoned when he leaves. I assume they're needy? It is out of the cage in the living room unless he has to leave the house for something. If/when I do go I will be bringing my boyfriend since I'm a 20 year old girl and wouldn't feel safe going alone.

Will pet sitting for this bird be too much? Liiike... would I have to spend 5+ hours with it or around it to keep it happy? I'll be taking classes and looking for a part time job so if a trip of his lands on a day I have class all day I guess I wouldn't be able to do much but come over for an hour or two in the late evening. What kind of rates are normal for this? Him and I still have some things to discuss obviously but I wanted to put out my concerns more bluntly on here to see what others think. Any insight is appreciated! I've never owned birds!

Ringnecks are similar sized to 'tiels, but they are MUCH MUCH MUCH louder, and they can hurt you a lot more when they bite.  Maybe it's not so much loudness, but they get really shrill.  They are pretty active birds, they need a few hours out of the cage a day minimum (depending on the size of cage) and variety in toys is a must.  I think the main difference between 'tiels vs. Ringnecks is that ringnecks can be a bit more 'moody' compared to how easygoing 'tiels are.

Do you know if her wings are clipped?  The best/easiest on her way to watch her would be to try and mimic her home environment as much as possible.  They're fun birds, though.  I have one and some 'tiels, and they seem to be completely different apart from size/general care.

Yes he does keep her wings clipped. I think he is planning on me going to his place to care for it, we haven't gone through many details yet. I know he doesn't cage her unless he has to leave for errands (he may work from home?) so she has reign of the living room. He wants to meet at Starbucks to talk about things. I'm really shy so I'm not looking forward to meeting a stranger to chat! It wouldn't be weird to have my boyfriend come along for that, would it? I'd be more comfortable since I won't just be meeting up alone with some man I don't know.

Hi there!  Fancy seeing you on here!  I've had many tiels and parrots before but not a ringneck. My reply is to say hi and to tell you to use caution and certainly take your boyfriend to the initial meeting and I suggest to the first few visits to the home if you decide to proceed.  You can never be too sure of anyone.  We all want the best for our pets so it seems a reasonable request.  Good luck and take care!

Tyler and I went to meet him at a Starbucks and talked for awhile. We ended up following him to his house to meet the bird and talked a little more. I didn't get any creepy-vibes but he is awfully chatty... We were out for almost two hours!
The bird is beautiful, she is a bright yellow color with a pretty orange beak. She isn't used to anyone but him and she wouldn't step up on my hand the first time I tried. A little later she did and tried to gnaw on my thumb a little, she didn't bite down hard though.
I'm watching her for a week at the end of August. We still haven't discussed any payment... I hate being the one to bring it up. I'm supposed to call today to get some more details.

Here is Ginger! She is very angry that her owner was replaced by lowly ol me. She lunges toward me and does not want to come out of the cage... At least she still has a good appetite, though!
