Rug and Rock help?
« on: June 26, 2010, 12:56:27 AM »
I wanted to get a piece of granite or stone like that, in my rats cage for them to lay on if they are hot. Well today at work my dad called me and asked if I would meet him there because he had something for me. He found a piece that had been broken off of who knows what. Its a pretty large piece. I was planning on using it once I sterilized it.  The only question I have is I am worried about the "top". It is very, very shinny. I was wondering if it was something they put on top to make it this way and after my dad was investigating it he said all they did was polish it up, that it shouldn't have any chemicals stuff in the "polish" that all they did was "rub the rock shinny". Well neither of us are experts so I was wondering what you all thought?

Also... about the Rug. I bought this cute little rug at the dollar store about 2 weeks ago. I have been wanting to use it in my girls cage, they aren't chewers but occasionally they will chew on something, not destroy it but just nibble. I was wondering if this would be okay because the rug has that rubber back to it? I was thinking it would be fine but also wanted some opinions.

(If either of these things would be a little bit easier with pictures, let me know  :))

If it's real granite or marble it's just polished and will be fine for your rats after you wash it off.  Remember, they make counter tops and cutting boards out of this so it wouldn't be sold as a food preparation surface if it was covered in chemicals (I hope!).
I have a ton of spare granite tiles from a kitchen redo and it's amazing how useful they are.   They cool the rats, they are a great place to put hot curling irons/flat irons, good to put hot pans on and great to put in the corners of the room if you have a cat or rat that likes to pull up the carpet in those areas.

My dad said it was from a table, he found the rest of it in pieces as well. So I think I am going to sterilize it and put it in there. Thanks!
