young rats/fn cage question
« on: July 31, 2010, 04:56:56 PM »
I searched and couldn't find my answer (I'm awful at searching on this forum  ) I have 2 little ratties, I would say they are about 2 months old (from looking at pictures of others' rats from birth on) maybe 3 months, and now that they are about to be done with their qt, I want to start introductions. I have a plan for this, but my real question is How old, or how big, do my rats need to be before I can put them in my fn 142 without them slipping through the bars?

on a sidenote, we are considering covering the cage in hardware cloth (?) but really have no idea how to go about doing that.

Please feel free to link me to other threads that have already discussed these things :D    Thanks!

depends on the rats.  I've known of 6 week old bucks that couldn't get out of  1" bar spacing, and fully grown does that could walk through with ease.  The best way to check is to put them in the cage and hold a treat outside of it.  If they can get their heads through then they're not big enough.
