Coroplast playpen?
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:28:05 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has made a playpen out of Coroplast? Are rats able of chewing out of it? I made my rats one of cardboard,  (Dumb idea) and they've chewed out of it. I can't always have them running around my room, and I don't want them always bored in their cages so I want to find something that will work. Alsohow much would it cost to make one of good size?

I built one last weekend.  Home Depot has sheets 30x36 in. For $8 a piece.  I connected the sheets together with the re-usable zip ties so it can be folded up when not in use.  The only chewing problem I seem to have is one of my boys likes to chew on the zip ties.  A sqiurt of water takes care of that.                    Desperate chewers will chew they're way out of anything.

I used a playpen made of coroplast. I always kept my eye on them and discouraged any chewing on it, so it was good.

You can also use thick, clear package tape to make 'seamless' sides with nothing sticking out for them to chew. Not impossible to bother it, but discouraging. The coroplast also folds easier this way.

Anyone have experience with a Grrreat Wall?  I keep hearing they aren't the best.  My rats are only 2 months, so maybe they are too little to jump up like an adult would.

Any other (relatively cheap) options out there?  Or is chloroplast the best option?  I don't have a way to let them free roam,  and I want a place where I can get in to interact with them (and I am a big guy, so the Martin playpen is out  ;D )

You could let them play on your bed, I did that while mine were young. But after awhile they realized they can get off ..so it's only a temporary solution to the inability of playtime on the floor!  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:
