Hedgy treats
« on: December 29, 2005, 11:37:52 AM »
Hello folks

I'm usually found on the rat board! I'm going to be visiting friends with an African Pygmy hedgehog (called Huff), we'd like to take along a treat for him - any ideas?

Thanks!

Most hedgehogs really enjoy something special, but it depends on whether your friend has introduced foods to him. If he's only used to getting kibbles he may not eat anything BUT.

So, a list of things my hedgehog would love to get as a treat:

Live mealworms
Live crickets (ask me about a cricket massacre in the bathtub hehehehe)
Poached salmon or microwaved fresh salmon. Not canned.
Fresh tuna, microwaved or baked. Not canned.
Shrimp, steamed without seasonings.
Gerber Graduate Turkey or Chicken Sticks
Any baby food meat in the jar
Dry Roasted Wax worms

Some hedgehogs like p'nut bugger. Mine don't. And just avoid completely the "can 'o" bugs. OMG can we say *gag*???

I have one hedgehog who adores pine nuts. Others hate them. Kinda like kids.

If you have any polar fleece, a 14" square piece makes a nice hedgehog blanket to snuggle in and might be appreciated.

Wow, thanks for all those suggestions! Might not be able to find some of those brands, being a Brit, but I'll go hunting tomorrow. As for the fleece, I have a large amount of fake fur (cow pattern, LOL) which I could run up into a blanket :D

He's been poorly lately. They found a lump on his neck, he had a biopsy yesterday and initial results show low-grade cancer  :-\ He ripped out all his stitches and they had to drive (a very long way) back to the vets to get them put back in again - they're working in shifts all night tonight to stop him from ripping them out again. Poor little love. This is kind of why I want to get him a treat.

Thanks for your advice! I shall go shopping tomorrow & report back  :)

I think Huff could use a wheel.  He's a chub, adorable though...  Hope he's healing okay.
