I feel that PTS is the last option you should consider, after all other remedies have been. If Misty has never had proper training could that be the first place you start? Perhaps she and your family will need to work one-on-one with an expert; I have known the most stubborn dogs to turn their ways around when their misbehaviors are approached in the right ways. I'm sure other people will have more experience and better advice; my belated Flicka was a remarkably wonderful girl. Good luck! But please try exhausting your options before PTS.

Taking her to a behaviorist would be a good idea.  Get some training classes in there, it's never too late for training classes!

I did a quick Google search (I love Google!) for "missouri dog training" and came up with this page. Looking into a few of the links it seems like a good place to start! Also check in with organizations/trusted pet stores in the area as they might have fliers or business cards. Good luck!

food, especially special treat food, is very high value, and worth defending. she defended it.

so now you've been very clearly shown that she's food aggressive and that she'll defend special treats with violence. you need to separate the dogs when there are food items involved. you need to become the leader and not let the other dog nose in on treats (in either direction, don't let either dog nose in on the other dog's treats). you need to send a clear message to her that she is the dog and the stuff is *not hers* to defend, but *yours* and that *you* get to make the rules regarding usage.

the easiest way to send that message is through nilif.

and i agree about working in person with a trainer. aggression towards people is not something to mess around with, and really goes beyond the scope of what anybody can help you with online.
