Big belly...worms or just fat? *UPDATE MAY 19*
« on: May 17, 2006, 03:36:50 PM »
My little Roxy is about 3 months and her belly is big and round.  She does eat a lot...and everything... little bigger doesn't know she's a herbivore and begs for everything I am eating.  But can rabbits get worms and have the typical pot belly that kittens and puppies have?  The cats had tapeworm awhile back...before I got Roxy.

Yeah, you need to take her to the vet ASAP.

Took her...or rather HIM to the vet today...where we discovered my little girl is a little man...so his name is now Rocky.  Well, the Dr felt something in his abdomen and took an x-ray, and his colon is backed up with what looks like cotton, carpet, or fur.  Since I have no carpet in my apartment and he doesn't have access to cotton, I think it must be fur, which is still weird cause he doesn't really shed that much (he's only 3 months).  So he's on a pineapple & hay diet (as well as his normal food in moderate amounts) with pineapple juice and water ad lib.  $300ish later...

Holy backup!  Good thing you caught it in time.  Rabbits that have that problem can go into a few problems and possibly die from it if left untreated.

Feed pineapple and papaya regularly as treats to prevent it from happening again. You can buy chewable human grade papaya tablets that buns LOVE. Dried pineapple chunks are great too.

Rocky is doing better.  His tummy isn't distended anymore and he seems happier.  He's such a great little cuddle bunny.
