i still remain steadfast- you cannot buy a quality dog crate and turn it into a suitable rat cage, for less than what a martins cage costs.

And what if you can't get a martins cage?

I think this is a great idea for those who are unable to get martins cages. if I was able to get a maryins cage then I would probably look away from the idea. But I can't so it is best to consider this interesting idea :)

You take the mesh wire you're covering it with and just build a cage out of it. I don't see the need to build a cage over a cage. Seems like more work than its worth.

Some people just aren't very handy... I'd love to build a cage, but I don't trust myself to get it right. Covering an existing "frame" (cage) with wire would be something I'd have cofidence in, but making an entire cage? No way.

I think if you managed to get it working, and you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Good for you for coming up with something new and different and making it work. :)

I can't wait to see photos, post ASAP! :P

They're not in it yet but...
Here are a few pics to show you size.

And with THREE adults in it!

Hopefully you can all see how HUGE it is. Especially with last pic. Lol.  ;D
I have almost finished, as you may have notices, just have the door left to do.

Yes, will definitely be adding shelves and levels.
I am using the base of my old cage as one level...AI plan to add more shelves and will be adding other stuff to make levels.
And will be sending in pictures when it's fully set up, with all the toys, and of course the ratties in it! Lol.

I merged the threads to keep continuity and to keep one topic going in one thread.  It's VERY easy to just modify the subject in your original post, so people realize there are now pictures.

HOLY COW!!! That thing is HUGE! Lol. I was going to post about yard sales. I just LOVE yard sales! Lol. I found a nice cage suitable for a few smaller babies at a yard sale for $25. Originally, it was around $80 at Petco. (It was used for 2-3 months, so it's basically brand new.) You can find all kinds of neat cages and such at yard sales for dirt cheap.

Yeah, just the two girlies. I know it's not gonna be easy cleaning it, but to be honest, if it means less fights and more room for them, it's not a problem. :P

:o WOW, I think what's great about it is the SPACE. 3 adults! Sheesh.

I like it. Kinda jealous. Very impressed. You can climb in to clean and re-arrange things.  :thumbsup2:

Lol, Yeah I know, it's great. Haha.
Can't wait to get it set up...
Should be putting a platform in it this afternoon (It's 10:50am here).
Then hopefully, I'll just put them in with all the stuff they've got at the moment, then just add stuff as I go along. :)

By the way, I don't know if I should have uncluded this in the other post or not. I made a new one as this is after it's been set up. feel free to move this is necissary.
ANYWAY...A picture of the dog cage before we set it all up (To show the size).
With 3 adults inside it...

And a few after it's been set up:

Apoligies if the pictures turn out too big/too small. I've had quite a few problems...

Nice cage but I will warn you, the wood will have to be replaced in a few weeks because the pee will get on the wood and not come out. I was never able to keep wood things in the cages because the smell was unbearable.

Very nice work!  I'd have to agree with Heather though, I won't put anything wood in my cage anymore because it gets soaked with pee and the smell doesn't come out.

I wish I have caught this thread a little earlier. Something else I wanted to warn you about as well. Back when I first started having rats and I was in college, I looked for cheap, easy ways to make cages for my rats. I had gone to petsmart and would look at their discounted cages that had been damaged and anything else I could find. I was lucky one day and was able to purchase a dog crate that had minimal amount of damage to the pan. I modified it and used it for about 1 year. During that time, the bars began their slow deterioration and began seriously rusting. I had to pitch the cage very soon after. The wire on your cage looks very similar to the wire that was on mine. Unfortunately, the wire was not made or coated for constant rat urine and buildup use. Just something to keep an eye out for.  ;)

looks nice

with the wood, if you shellac it, the pee wont soak in as much.
